Hey man, thanks a lot for this tutorial. A small question: how do you work textures over chord progressions? Let's say something simple, like a I-IV-V. Would you move your drone up and down over every chord change, or would you rather keep a sustained pedal note indepently of what's going on on top? Thanks!
@VenusTheory
@VenusTheory 3 жыл бұрын
Yo! Well, generally speaking they are more 'drone' elements so they stick to the root of the song and everything else gets worked over the top. If it's not too unstable with many notes and such, then you could render it out and put it in a sampler to convert it to a playable pad/instrument!
@Martinarmonica
@Martinarmonica 3 жыл бұрын
@@VenusTheory Thank you very much for taking the time to answer. Over the last couple days I've been experimenting and I finally decided to stick to the root. For the folk music I'm working on, droning over the fundamental makes resolution much stronger. Thanks again dude, have a great weekend.

Yo! Yeah Diva is great for that kinda vintage/warm sound. However, it's extremely CPU heavy. For other options though, Massive is surprisingly good for pads, as is stuff like Omnisphere, Reaktor, and Absynth. UVI Falcon is an absolute beast for pads too!

In terms of free, I'd really recommend using Cecilia 5 and just running random stuff through it, then using that in a sampler track. Question: I am new to the field and eyeing up a career in it. I see a lot of back and forth about what a sound designer is and what the scope of their job entails. I love ambience like this, but some people insist that this is explicitly the domain of a composer and not a sound designer. Does anyone have any insight on this for either film or games?
@mcod99
@mcod99 4 жыл бұрын
Are you Irish :)
@VenusTheory
@VenusTheory 4 жыл бұрын
Yo! Well, in that case yes that would really come to the composer's end of things. You wouldn't want to force the composer to write in a certain key or create clashing sonics. That said, you might be more interested in the field I work in myself. I often create sample libraries and soundbanks that are designed to be used with certain synths or programs like Kontakt which are then in turn purchased by composers and game studios and musicians and all that to use when creating their scores/games/music/etc. I'd suggest you start researching some sound companies that release libraries for film/game composers and reach out to them!

Do you put compression on your voice?
@VenusTheory
@VenusTheory 4 жыл бұрын
Yo! My vocal chain is just a bit of EQ to clean up the low rumbly stuff, a bit of mid cut/boost for clarity, and a slight high shelf. There's a bit of compression to level things out, and then a limiter at the end to catch any weird peaks.

Haha thanks. And yeah this is just what I sound like really. The only processing going on is just a bit of EQ since I'm close to the mic and that gets a bit boxy, and some compression just to even out the levels. Best advice I can give is just speak from your chest and not your nose.
