So in the world of Custom LEGO, most places will use with UV, or Pad printing. But what's the difference? Is one better than the other? Let's find out.

The quality on the UV-print is just plain bad with todays technology. The UV-print is just a print. Blurry and with clearly visible raster dots and distortion on the curved surface. Pad printing is crisp clear and uniform in colour. :)

But it is a cool technology with lots cool things you can't do with pad. Like custom one offs.
@PeterHanley1337

@@noren77 this is totally true - a custom multi-color print for a small run of minifigs would be too time intensive to be worth it, and too expensive in terms of consumables.

UV is somewhat inconsistent. The colors depend a lot on what the seller does. Figfablabs for instance tends to only use the bare minimum in colors which doesn't look as nice. Jonak on the other hand has really nice printing and doesn't usually skimp out on colors. Same with av as well. The colors for pad are definitely not always uniform. Arealight for instance is very inconsistent especially when it comes to their orange color. It's really up to the seller in that case. Another plus for UV is that it's very durable. Because it's fairly thick, unless you're really trying to screw it up it won't come off. Pad printing is definitely not as durable. The unique texture that UV has can also arguably be a benefit. For instance, av is actually advertising it with his recent spiderman figures as it gives a really unique effect that can arguably be considered more accurate. UV is also great for one-off figures. I actually had a clone printed one-off a few months ago. Pad is definitely more useful for something like clones where the base design usually remains the same, which is one of the reasons why CAC is so successful. Another knock for UV is that it has limited use. Printing UV on anything other than a flat surface usually results in blurry edges. If not then the printing takes up a small area. 360 printing is also harder with UV because alignment is harder. It's not impossible as av does a really good job with it but it's not as easy as doing it with pad. Overall I don't hate UV printing by any means. It absolutely has its place in the market and it's really useful in many cases. Pad printing is almost always better but it's significantly less common. Because of that I will never NOT buy something because it's uv printed. UV is definitely better than decals in my opinion, although usually having a UV printed body + a decaled helmet is usually the ideal combination.

For the distortion part, I've seen chinese printers that rotates the object (toys in this instance, it was for bottles and other roundy stuff in the video) so that it doesn't distorts the printed content. As for the dots, it isn't THAT obvious for the naked eye.

I'm in the same boat with you saying that a figure being pad or UV doesn't matter as long as the figure is good, although I do prefer UV in most cases, as it's more friendly towards my budget.

There’s obviously a difference but what I find interesting is how often people ask “is it UV or PAD?” To that point I think, for the majority of consumers not be able to tell at a glance, having one or the other isn’t really necessary. While with pad you can certainly make the claim to higher quality, UV is more than serviceable at this point if you have one of the better printers.
@Parasite98

But this is what's not been touched on in the video. There are levels of UV quality and I have seen some good UV that you can not tell is UV but I have also seen bad UV where you can clearly see is UV and more then often is poorly printed/alligned.

@@Parasite98 I agree with this. I buy UV printed items from tons of different sellers and the quality can vary drastically, even within the same company. Also I find it hilarious that people ask what the difference between pad and UV is. It's extremely obvious if you know what to look for. UV always has a texture and if you shine it in the light it has a certain sheen to it.

One thing on the number of colors with UV prints -- my guess is that for a low color count most printers would choose to use what are known as spot colors (i.e. pre-mixed colors, like Orange) but as individual colors in the design increase (or there's a lot of blending and shading) the printer will probably be looking to print the art with a 4-color (aka CMYK) separation, possibly with followup spot colors on top (industrial toy pad printers are like 12-color) -- in videos I've seen of the process it looks like a top outline print is common.

To add to the final point part of that cost/lack of cost is Pad printing has a ton more room for error so you have to throw out/redo more parts then UV... Or just do what Lego has done recently and just don't care just ship it out anyway errors or not at the same price.

"as I don’t like to feel the texture of the print." That's because the manufacturers are being cheap. Varnishing and coating the object in post processing would make this less noticeable by a huge margin.

UV is obviously a lot more viable, but I can see the difference. UV is thicker and has a bumpy texture when compared to pad. and honestly that wouldn't be a problem, if it weren't for the fact that LEGO pad prints. I don't like when custom figures are noticably not lego, but that's just me.

So I recently got a Uv printed fig and they are a lil lacking on the quality side when it comes to the printing. I like to bring my figs with me to work, or just when I drive somewhere and after the first day with the UV printed one I could see someone if the fading print fading off. Vs actual lego pad printing that I’ve taken many times and haven’t gotten those types of fading on figs.

@liamdawes3408
@liamdawes3408 8 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, I'd think 400-1200 would be too little to get into, some chinese printers can go for multiple thousands and you'd be looking at 10k+ for a 2nd hand printer from a reputable brand and 25k+ for something new and that's at the low to mid end

I don’t care for AV simply because they are never in stock. Going to a website for custom figures and finding them all unavailable 90% of the time is lame. CAC is superior because at any time I can decide “I need X amount of this helmet” and click order. No waiting months for a release and then missing out because people sat on their computer and clicked faster.

This video was greatly disappointing to me. It started off well, and I appreciated you trying to be objective and give the facts early on, later on tho that all seemed to fall apart. You said that the only difference between pad and UV is price, that’s just not true, and just because your unable to tell the difference dosent mean there isn’t one. One of the people I talk to a lot dosent like UV because of the way that light glares off of it as opposed to UV. To say that it’s dumb to dislike UV without understanding why some people do is in my opinion just dumb. I cannot fully express just how disappointed I am in this video.

So I've been thinking about this comment all day today and wanted to respond. I think I'm going to make a follow up video next week to cover all this a little more thoroughly but I didn't want to make you wait until then, or have you feel like I'm ignoring this. First, keep in mind this is part 3 of 5 in a series. A series which focuses on someone who exclusively uses pad printing. A method I didn't understand before and took the effort to learn about. At the end of the day, when I line up my CAC figs next to those from AV, they are equal to me. But, that's to me. You are absolutely right that there is a shine on UV printed figures and that it can make a difference to people. I should have mentioned that in the video. It's something I've noticed and it completely slipped my mind for some reason, and it shouldn't have. Because that is something directly caused by UV printing which can cause people to not like it. I think you're general consumer probably won't notice the difference, but your custom collector may. With that said, you're always going to get my opinion on this channel. That's kind of the point. I try to always be clear when I'm voicing my opinion, and I always say that having a differing opinion is okay. Because it is. But I'll always share my opinion here. Now, with the whole "not liking s figure because it's UV printing being dumb is dumb" thing, well that's the whole point of the response. I said that as more like someone not liking UV printing, period. Not because of any sort of side effect it may have. As in, they dislike it because it's not pad printing. That obviously didn't come across and I should have just not said that anyway.

@@OntheBrick I have no issue with your opinion, nor do I disagree that most people won’t notice. My issue was that you disrespected the opinions of others. I know your trying to understand the difference and I appreciate that, but something that you can’t understand by learning the process and the difference of how it’s made is why people have that preference. Why not interview people who collect pad printed figs? A great person to talk to would be the brick engineer. Regardless I do appreciate the effort and look forward to the next episodes in this series.
