Rip currents can be your friend but at the same time can be your biggest enemy. In this video I discussed how you can find and see rip currents when you are on the beach and how this can help you get out the back a bit easier. I also discussed the ways of getting out of the current if you get stuck...

I wish I saw your video a few monthes ago it could have saved me from being in rip currents, thanks to God everything ended well but it was horrible....When I saw I was takern so far away in just a few seconds and that swimming to the coast was no use I just decided to not loose feet and moved my arms for people to see me and shout "Help me" to the people far away hoping they would understand I needed help...Thanks to God everything ended well, and thanks to these people for having helped me, I think they were lifeguards telling from the color of their red jersey back to the coast...May God bless those people and all people saving the others in the World, and may God bless you man for your knowledge. We should had learnt all this at school..

Dude, years ago prolly 13 yrs when I was first learning to bodyboarding I was at my home break @ sand island on Oahu. I was out there getting a few good rides and getting an easy time paddling back out. The conditions were choppy and this place was sharky too. I was out there about hour, hour and a half and no one was around me. I started freaking out cuz I hate waiting and the sets settled down so I tried to paddle back in, then I realized I was getting tired barely moving. I realized I was in a rip current and panicked cuz I'm by myself. I fought the rip and it took me at least 25 minutes to get to shore which only took 5min to get out. I stopped for a good while because of that experience. Now I'm so much better BB and I feel confident out there now. But when you're just starting out that can be scary AF.

As an older person 58 and very new to the sport where are some good starting locations that offer enough wave to be enjoyable but not too much as I try to learn these skills. I live in North East U.S with very short summer season but do get down to South east US (florida) through out the year. Thanks and appreciate all the safety advice on your videos

@iaincampbell_

I have spoken about this a lot in video of how to keep your elbows in as close to you body and remember that you need to also keep cantered in your board. Unfortunately some landings are going to be hard and sore. That’s part of the sport.

The most important parts of this video for you to remember are to observe where the foam and/or sand is brought out in a line, where you can see the water being more rippled and disturbed than elsewhere and also where the waves seem mushy, crumbly or soft. As Iain says, you should try to get a good and high vantage point (dunes, cliffs, the roof of your car, whatever works) to try and see these lines moving out to sea. If you don't have a vantage point, then you need to specifically focus on where you can see the rippling effect of water and where the waves appear softer or more crumbly. You won't be able to see the lines of foam/sand beyond the break. Iain's photos of Caves are super good to get an idea of how that looks over a sand bar. Hope this helps, because learning to read rips has probably been the single most important thing I've learnt in my nearly two decades of surfing and bodyboarding.

Bro thoses rips are like obstacles for me , because of them i'm afraid to surf alone cuz i can get caught on one In your opinion how can i overcome that fear and be able to surf alone ?
@iaincampbell_
@iaincampbell_ 3 жыл бұрын
I think you need to learn how to get out of them. That’s the best way to get over your fear is to face to. Never paddle against the rip and if you get stuck in one paddle 90 degrees to where the rip is coming from. I promise you will never get caught again.
