I love Greenland paddles and it’s my primary paddle with a euro has my spare. The Ipik is gorgeous and can’t wait for it to release at the end of the year. It does take some time to get used to if anyone started with the euro blade and it’s all personal preference which one is preferred, so it’s all relative. There’s benefits for both styles as you mentioned. One thing I would say is that the Greenland paddle IS the traditional paddle, not the other way around.

I've only been kayaking for 10 years and the first 3 years I was using a Euro style paddle. When I began kayaing I was 55 and enjoyed my Werner carbon paddle, then around age 58 I heard about the Greenland style paddles and thought I would give it a try. I started with the Gearlab Akiak and really enjoyed the lightness, and the ease of paddling. I now own 2 Akiak and 1 Kalleq, and purchased an Akiak for both my son and my granddaughter when she was only 9. I paddle in both lakes and on the New River which is located in southern West Virginia and Virginia. The New River ranges fron class 1 to class 3 rapids depending on the water level (at least on the section I traverse). That being said, I rarely go down the New River when class 3 rapids are present. I like you were hesitant to go from my Euro to the Greenland paddles in white water, but I came to enjoy and trust my Gearlab Kalleq paddle. I'm now thinking of buying my 4th Gearlab paddle, the Ipik, to give me a little more confidence in white water, possibly even class 3. I guess that I unintentionally proved your point in higher class white water, well at least above class 2. I own and use 3 sea kayaks, varing in size from 14' to over 18', even on the New River; I found that with a 16' to 18' kayak, I can litterly skip across the top of the waves and not do much porpoising; plus, because of the weight, average 55 lbs, I cut through the waves nicely. I also use my kayaks for fishing, last year in, South Carolina, I landed an 8lb 2oz large mouth bass, that was very interesting in a 16' kayak. Overall, I agree with you, the Greenland paddles are great for touring, but with a little practice, they can be used in white water, that is below class 3, in my opinion. This March I'm scheduled to venture into the Atlantic off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, if conditions permit, and next year I plan on returning to Marquette, Michigan for a short tour of Lake Superior. Final comment, the Greenland paddles were actually created by the Inuits of Greenland, for use in white water conditions on the Atlantic Ocean. I'm sure the Inuits know more than we do, so don't be hesitant to give the Greenland paddles a try, especiall if it's made by Gearlab, you might even become a convert, like me.

I really like my Gearlab GP paddles. They're really well made, light and well designed. However, I prefer my wooden GP and Aleut paddles. The problem with carbon fiber, fiberglass or other materials is that you only have a couple of sizes and blade widths as options. With wood your options are virtually unlimited. Now, my favorite paddle is an Aleutian style wooden paddle made out of three laminated types of wood with an oil finish and a ferrule to break it into two parts. I also use a secondary paddle made of wood that has a single single blade for paddling my kayak in tight areas too narrow for a double blade like mangroves in the Everglades For whitewater, I use a Euro blade. In my trimaran, I use an outrigger canoe paddle. Everything else, I go Greenland or Aleut. You should try rolling with that paddle. You'll love how much less effort and hip snap is required to come back up. For those interested in trying a GP, plans to make one from a 2x4 can be found on the internet. You can own one for under fifteen bucks that way.

Ken there are a couple important points with the Ipik. First the popularity of Gearlab is in part due to their success surmounting challenges in making and marketing commercially available Greenland paddles. Greenland paddles normally feature an oval loom that feels right in the hands, and most traditional paddles are typically shouldered, with sizing very personalized to the user. The Kalleq and other Gearlabs features a round loom chiefly to save manufacturing cost, and the shoulderless design is also more universal, saving the need for different blade sizes for various loom/blade/overall length combinations. While shouldered vs shoulderless is more personal preference, shouldered paddles have some distinct benefits with the grip (index finger and thumb on loom, rest of hand extending onto the blade), indexing, and wrist alignment, and are especially helpful for beginner Greenland paddle users. As Gearlab gradually improved their product, the Ipik came as a result of a collaboration with Greenland paddling experts Cheri and Turner of Kayak Ways to create a more authentic and functional shouldered Greenland paddle shape, with new technology needing to be developed to manufacture the oval loom. These changes are a meaningful step forward over the previous Gearlab designs and I'll be excited to try it! For someone seeking to get into Greenland paddling for the first time, I think the best option is to buy a traditional wooden paddle from an experienced maker or find a 2x4x8 of Western Red Cedar from the lumber yard and learn to carve one themselves!

So I’ve got a buddy that is about to retire from our fire dept and he’s a big kayaker. I was surfing around trying to find something to get him as a retirement gift and as I’ve gotten into woodworking this past year I came across this paddle and it immediately caught my interest. You mentioned the 2x4x8 cedar, which is the wood I wanted to use, my question is do I keep the paddle about that long or do I trim it down to what’s in the video? It looks like it’s about 5 ft? And would you suggest a bit of a wider blade contour for river kayaking?

I'm new to paddling (just over a year) with both a recreational/sea kayak and a sit-on-top. I use a Gearlab Akiak greenland paddle primary and an Aqua Bound euro as my backup. I've found the greenland to be a lot more forgiving if I happen to miss-time a stroke - I've had times where I've miscalculated the angle and almost dumped myself. You probably haven't experienced that because with all your experience, you never miss strokes. I'm saving up for the Ipik.

I just got a Gearlab Malik Greenland paddle. Am looking forward to taking it out. There are Canadian and northern US makers of wood GP's and Aleutians, but the Malik was still reasonable entry level price but still a premium over say a Decathalon Euro-style paddle. I do have shoulder strain issues, and hoping GP will keep me on the water longer and help with my bucket list item of finally figuring out how to roll a kayak.

I have a 230 cm Kalleq and love it. For touring, rolling, bracing and sculling it’s great. In a medium to strong current I’ll use my euro blade still. It’s just a different paddle experience and it will take a bit of paddling time to discover the benefits and the joy of the GP. Low angle paddle is easier but less speed, high angle paddle is harder but faster. I can paddle almost as fast as my Werner Camano but it’s easier and more relaxing. I think if they were cheaper and more available, more people would have them. It’s a lot of money just to jump in and buy one as I did, and I know I’d never buy a bent shaft paddle without trying it out first. You won’t find many negative reviews on Greenland paddles. The Ipik looks great and I’d love to try it too.

I use a kellaq for my main paddle, and have been for about two years. I am extremely comfortable with the paddle, however I still agree with you that a euro paddle is far superior in rough conditions as it gives you more instant power, and faster maneuvering power allowing you to stop and change directions far faster than you would be able to with a Greenland paddle.

Admittedly I paddle a surfski, so I need a different paddle altogether, but a small wing paddle (in carbon fiber) has completely changed my game. I can paddle for miles and miles with that thing. The boat makes a difference of course, but that paddle was like taking off the training wheels.

I just ordered an Gearlab Akiak yesterday. My current paddle is a bent shaft Werner Shuna. The Akiak with the bag is only a couple bucks more than the Werner was two years ago, so the pricing compares well to a euro paddle of the same quality. Your paddle is 100 bucks more (CAD) than the Akiak though. Cheers.

I got a Greenland paddle a couple years ago because it was said to be less stressful on my shoulders. I believe it is and now I am used to it, I would never consider going back. I hate a euro paddle when I occasionally use one. While I agree that switching to a Greenland paddle takes some adjustment, I have been told that if you are offered both when you start to paddle, you will always pick the Greenland because paddling feels more natural. I can’t say I have much experience with this but when I went out with a friend of a friend who was trying out second hand kayak and had little paddling experience, I offered her my Greenland paddle to try and she loved.

@NathanBonselaar
@NathanBonselaar Жыл бұрын
If your brace isn't working with the Greenland, try adding a slight sweeping or sculling motion to gain extra support. Most Greenland paddles work better when the blade is moving through the water. Also: the traditional paddle is the Greenland paddle; Euros are a recent introduction.

A Greenland paddle blade should be sized so that you can grasp the blade near the end with the fingers on one side and the thumb on the other. This allows you to extend the paddle by putting both hands on one blade or one hand on the blade and one on the loom. This gives much more support to braces (and more powerful sweep strokes). When extended the blade in your hands isn't available if you lose your balance to that side. Practice extending and unextending the paddle to make those maneuvers fluid and reliable. This will add more capabilities to your use of the Greenland paddle.

@DominiqueB
@DominiqueB Жыл бұрын
yes, the rule of thumb is to be able to curve your fingers over the top of the blade when standing -- to be adjusted for personal preferences, the width of your boat... 2 other dimensions to consider are: -- the width of the blade: you should be able to grab it in you hand when you fully extend the paddle to one side or the other when doing sweeps, rolls, etc. and -- the width of the loom, the section between your hands: if the paddles has no shoulder, just a gentle slope between the loom and the blade, not so critical, but if there is a marked shoulder, that's what you would grab it with your index finger and thumb. If this is not roughly the width of your shoulders, so your arms are somewhat straight, the paddle will be less comfortable (on longer distances -- it still works fine. :-)

@maryhenry3257
@maryhenry3257 Жыл бұрын
I’ve thought about adding drip rings to my GL Kalleq, because a con of using any paddle without rings is that more water ends up in your skirt/lap. But a real joy of the GL paddle is to have hands smoothly slide, changing the centre point of the paddle, to lengthen the paddle now on one side, now the other as needed, to make nuanced balance and steering adjustments. I Don’t often use my rudder now. Rings I think would only interfere with this varying hand positioning (and I suspect shoulders would, also). At first I missed having shoulders, but I wouldn’t go back to them now. The only time I resort to a Europaddle now is when the water is very cold, because yes, using a GP means wet hands if we are to get the full benefit of the paddle.

I feel for you lol. Stability on a kayak is more to do with your weight than center of gravity. The manufacturers claim weight capacity: 425lbs / 193kg on this kayak, after a while you realize thats bs. Its normally about 1/3 or 1/2 that. My only advice is to watch the weight and invest in outriggers. Its really hard to paddle with outriggers so make sure they fold away when not in use. There lots of videos to watch on youtube on this subject and take it from me, your not the only one falling in.

Greenland paddles have been around for 100's of years and I think there about 20 different designs. So there something in them. Carbon fibre might not be the right material to use for this design. Its the old argument wood verse modern materials. I have a ainsworth aft one piece carbon paddle that foam filled and I love the way it bounces out the water similar to a wooden blade. The gearlab outdoors IPIK is a nice looking paddle, but I'm more likey to buy a wooden Greenland paddle. The buoyancy of the blade makes a ton of different on a long day on the water. Its the reason I use my cheap ainsworth aft & not my Celtic on long days.

In my opinion I don't think that Greenland paddle is worth that much money. I spent approx $200 on my Greenland paddle and because it can go up to 230 cm the weight is almost 800 grams, but I'm very pleased with it! It was the cheapest one I could find here in Sweden, made with carbon fiber and you can set the angle and reduce the length down to 220 cm, so good for tall paddlers. Like you said beginners should go for cheaper ones, like I did, but even if you go for 230 cm with the one you've tested it will still be heavier, maybe 700 gram and you still pay a premium for it. Is the quality of it really that good? It's still made from the same material as my cheap paddle, so I really don't think it's worth more than twice the thing I paid.

its too bad the only company that makes these only makes them for $360 and up... crazy expensive to experiment with when you can get a nice eruo paddle for $150

I don’t believe you mentioned WHEN you can get one. With GPs I am also interested in how well they float. Wooden ones float pretty well depending on the wood used. I have the Akiak which I like. I have never used a Euro blade, but then, most of my paddling has been on the sea using a traditional wooden boat called a Sabani. They use a single blade paddle with a shape similar to a GP. Some have a reverse shape, meaning less wide at the tip and wider closer to the hands. During races this allows for faster entry of the blade. The Sabani is too wide for a double paddle except at the stern where the helmsman sits. Many races include a ditch and recovery, but not all. The Sabani can also carry a Chinese style junk rig.

only for the look? meh... no. for the weight? i've added a piece of rebar inside my paddle for a month or two, now i fkn don't care about weight of the paddle. sit on 35"wide kayak, 30km/3hour.(first attempt was rough, now it's a good workout) i have too much power in arms for a so small paddle, even a standard euro paddle is too small for me. i'm always looking for longer and wider. my philosophy: it's easier to paddle slower with a huge paddle than faster with a small paddle. i don't understand this paddle.

paddle measurements typically use the more universal metric system. 219 centimeters ==> ~86.5 in.

I always laugh at carbon fiber sports equipment. For 20 dollars you can make one from hardware store stuff and its better for the environment too.

I appreciate what you're saying, but it's not comparing apples to apples. It's like saying you can make a golf club for $20 from the hardware store. You can... but you get what you pay for!

@@PaddleTV You sound like a dumb capitalist trying to justify buying the made in china molded kayak over a hand made sea worthy skin on frame kayak made by a Inuit in his spare time. a 10$ 2x4 makes a really light weight and strong paddle and it only takes basic tools. Whats why Greenland Inuit kayak enjoys make their own paddles and kayaks. I don't have the room in my apartment to make a kayak but I do for paddles and I get to say I made it myself and I am ready to bet it is lighter then you carbon fiber one. It's also custom made to my body. If I were to make you a paddle, I would charge you at least 100-200$ for my time and materials. I made my own 2x4 weightlifting safety cage I use to squat and bench press. Its about 25lbs and I can disassemble it and resemble it in in 1 min with out tools. Though I leave it fully built in a corner and when I want to use it with weights I pull it out of its corner so I dont hit the walls with the bar and if it were not for the wideness, I could do it with one hand. I can pack it and move it in one hand also. I trust this 50$ material worth contraption to hold at least 1000lbs of weight altough I wont go higher then 200lbs + 170lbs of my body weight cuz I don't want to train to be a beaf. To make a paddle all you need is a saw and something like a draw knife to shave away at the wood. so 10$ of wood, 40$ of tool investment and like 20$ for a bottle of linseed of danish oil to protect the wood from the water. Your carbon fiber paddle can be made diy for about 100$ of material, not counting the molding needed, How ever if I am not mistaken, glass fiber would be a better material and it turns out its lighter and cheaper.(lighter because it needs less resin and material then carbon fiber to archive the same strength) Also for your dumb ass analogy, I bet a 20$ hardware store store stuff made golf club can outperform you overly expensive gold clubs. In fact, you don't even need most of the clubs in your bag. It's just a sport for rich people to show off they waster thousands of dollars on sticks to hit a plastic ball down some vast fields that could house thousands or entertain thousands per week as a public park. Not to mention the tones of toxins dumped into the soil to have unrealistic grass. You know what, send me your fuck you money that you get to spew all your nonsence and I will make you a paddle or golf club that will put your expensive shit to shame with how cheap they can be made. I mean do you think your 1100$ Iphone is actualy worth 1100$. It cost them 200$ to produce, employee cost and material cost. the rest is pure profit. You can actualy go to china, bribe the factory manager and go home with a iphone for 200 USD and the dude will still make his money. How much you spend to make something means fuck all. Its how you do it.
