Ignacy Jan Paderewski, famous Polish pianist, played nine concerts in North Carolina. The first occurred in Charlotte on January 26, 1905; the last, on April 28, 1939, in Raleigh. This final concert was the eighth from his last concert ever, The first concert in Raleigh--January 23, 1917--occurred the day after Woodrow Wilson's speech before Congress advocating, for the first time, the creation of a free and independent Poland with access to the sea. This speech incorporated the ideas contained in an aide memoire submitted by Paderewski to Colonel House on January 11, 1917, and transmitted to Wilson. The United States entered the European war on April 6, and these postulates became stated war aims, bolstered the following January by the 13th of the 14 Points. Three performances by Paderewski took place in 1923: November 23 (Raleigh), November 26 (Charlotte), and November 30 (Asheville). He made a single appearance in 1928 in Greensboro, on January 27. In 1931 he inaugurated the newly built Page Auditorium at Duke University in Durham (January 8) and played Charlotte the following night.
