Ignace Jan Paderewski performs Franz Liszt's Rhapsodie Hongroise #2 recorded October 1923 on Duo Art piano roll # 6670-0, when Paderewski was 62 years old. This roll is played on a restored 1926/1933 5'4" Chickering Duo Art grand, built initially as an Ampico A in 1926 and factory-fitted with a late-style drawer-mount Duo-Art in 1933. There is an early film recording of Paderewski playing this piece when he was older, but it is interesting to me to see his distinctive style (especially the rubato) in this piece recorded when his skills were still very sharp. Some KZfaq comments have been unhappy with this piano's tone in earlier postings. But I think the instrument sounds very nice in person-so hopefully this microphone / recording system does it a little more justice.

I grew up listening to this roll on a Steinway grand Duo-Art at my grandmother's place in Mahwah NJ.

It feels like a real pianist is there, performing for us. Mr. Paderewski's recording is very well done and your piano makes me jealous :)

When I was young, my dad's hobby was restoring reproducing pianos. I used to love to listen to this recording on our concert grand Steinway Duo Art. I now have a 1926 Chickering Ampico, and have a recording of this piece played by Rachmaninoff ... but I really prefer Paderewski's version. No one else's interpretation seems quite right.

You are listening to a wonderfuly restored physical recording of one of the most notable pieces, by one of the most recognised pianists of all time and all you people do is talk about how some Blattaria scuttles across the floor for a couple of seconds... Just... Think about that for a second.

Is cool, shame no earlier 20th century composers like Debussey or Ravel ever 'recorded' on one of these, I know there are really early recordings of a few early 20th century composers playing their own compositions but non on piano roll that I'm aware of
