Tricia Huguelet, MD, of Children’s Hospital Colorado, explains how dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain) can be a symptom of endometriosis. As Chief of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, Dr. Huguelet understands that new onset pain, particularly when moderate to severe in intensity and of an unknown cause, can scare her patients. In this video, she outlines the difference between primary and secondary dysmenorrhea, how to treat period pain, as well as signs and symptoms that your patient’s period pain may be something more serious.

Those who don’t feel much during their first day is sooooooo lucky!!! I used to always end up vomiting and get extremely dizzy. Even drinking water and taking some kind of pill always made me nauseous (vomited the pills back up). My body felt like it was on fire but freezing and like those days were horrible. My doctor eventually put me on bc and cramps are tolerable but back pain and nausea is still present. To sum up everything... periods suck 🥺

I feel this so much, i call it my period flu. I hate the fact that i dread my period so much, and envy people that have easy periods. We have to plan everything around them, and explaining this to somebody that has easy one's...i swear they look at me like I'm crazy. My boss doesn't understand it because she's had it just so damn easy. She is planning a work pool party, and when we all settled on a few dates that would work for everyone, i picked the one furthest from my period. When i mentioned it, she literally scoffed at the fact that i have to do this with vacations and everything. Not to mention, who the hell would want to go to a pool party even if my period WAS easy peasy...lol. anyways..good luck with your situation! I had to vent a little as I'm in my car about to head into work, with cramps..breaking out in a sweat and about to throw up...lovely. lol.

These comments feel like a safe place to share that we're not alone! I was on birth control for acne from the age of 14 til the age of 21. It was several months after going off the pill that I learned how painful my periods are naturally. It has been 8 years since I went off the pill, and it has only gotten worse. The first 2 days of my period, I have painful cramps, and I have to have my heating pad on high, be on our near a toilet, and holding a bowl, because the cramps give me the urge to poop and throw up, and it will often come out of both ends at the same time at some point. 🥺 I hate my period so much and I can't work or be with people or function like a normal person. NSAIDs take 4 hours or so to kick in and take the edge of the pain and sickness off. After the first 2 days, it gets better, and the bleeding starts to slow, as well. I hate the NSAIDs I take, and I think they may be the reason I now have acid reflux. I have always wondered if I have endometriosis because women on both sides of my family have it. I don't like that they load you with drugs over a long period of time to attempt to diagnose you with endo, and then you have to get surgery to find out for sure...I know lots of women have way more intense pain and suffer longer during their periods. You girls are all amazing! We are in this together and none of us should feel alone! ❤️

God bless all of y'all lovely ladies in the comments! I'm so relieved to learn that I'm not the only one who goes through this- my periods just seem to be worsening, to the point where I can barely function. I have these episodes where I get extremely hot and fatigued, and I can't breathe and my heartrate gets extremely rapid. My vision always goes blurry and I can't form coherent sentences, or even really make out anything but shapes and outlines. It feels like I'm going to die. I'm absolutely terrified for the future, because I don't know what I'll do a year from now in college, when I don't have my parents to administer minerals or other supplements when I have these episodes...I'd do it myself, but sometimes I'm just completely paralyzed. I have no clue what to do, and am honestly just heartbroken. I wish I could function like a normal person. And these issues last two weeks before my period, the week of, and two weeks after..I'm in this constant cycle, and it's absolute torture. Does anyone have anything similar and, if so, what has helped? I have a lot of sensitivities and wouldn't like to go on birth control, I'd rather do something natural. Thanks all!

Mefenemic acid taken with paracetamol improved my pain a lot. Also getting my Vitamin D levels up as high as possible helped SO MUCH. There is a study that says low vitamin D link with period pain worsening. Also blackstrap molasses, teaspoon everydayif you google it and period pain theres explanation how to take and raspberry leaf tea might help too. But you will be just masking your symptoms. This could be endomteriosis or another serious problem, you shouldnt have to suffer so bad. So do get checked out and push till you have answers.

I’m really happy i found this video, i’m not diagnosing myself with this but i am so tired of feeling dismissed about my period. Being ‘overdramatic’ ‘over exaggerating’. I have the cold and hot sweats shaking and back pain and i puke everyday of my period which causes me to feel nauseous all the time while on it and can’t take more medication after throwing up with the horrific cramps because of the recommended medication dosage, i miss so much school because of it. My mom is taking me to a doctor to see what’s wrong with me, but i have been on multiple medications. I first tried advil, ibuprofen, midol, advil extra strength, now i have prescribed medication meant to help inflammation of my uterus. i took it today for the first time but i hate to say that it did nothing and the pain like it usually is was just muted slightly. i think i’m going to show my mom this video so when we go to the doctors she knows a little more.

I finally got diagnosed last year, i been dealing with this since the age of 14. I went to the hospital several times when it got really bad. I use to vomit at-least 3 times a day, take so much ibuprofen and nothing would work. Some months it’s not that bad and other months I genuinely don’t want to be alive, the thing that sucks the most is that some people don’t understand this condition. One time I had anatomy lab & couldn’t even sit in class to take my test because i so desperately wanted to curl up into my bed because all of the pain I was feeling. These cramps are no joke & I salute all the ladies out there that deal with this condition 💖. I hope later down the line they find a better route than just pain killers. Because sometimes the pain killers just don’t decide to work no matter how much you take.

I get all the worst bad symptoms each month and I've still found no relief. It's torture. I am based in the UK. I have tried various medications to no success. At the moment I am on mefenamic acid but found no success or proper cure yet. I am too scared to go to GP anymore. I am made to feel like I am wasting their time. It takes out so many days mensing lost jobs, missed classes and total failure in all my endeavours as I've never been able to attend anything regularly yet. I do exercise and I have a very balanced, rich, conscientious diet. I am very depressed today about all these years wasted away suffering for nothing. Other than just putting up with the unbearable and indescribable agony, what can I practically do right now to better my future health and live a comfortable life? Thank in advance.

Stephanie Cantu this what i’ve been told. I’m well into my 20’s and still have insanely painful periods. Not as bad as in my teens - I would often pass out because the pain would become inbearable - but now it’s never been anything more than crazy painful cramps and nausea, and just sometimes I feel like as if its hard to breathe. If I’m at work, I’ll have to take a break. But I’m hoping this will calm itself when I get pregnant and have kids. And I truly hope I don’t pass it down to my potential daughters.

Ive been having it since sometime in highschool. It usually happens the second day of the full blown period. When I wake up I start to feel uneasy until a little after when I get up for the day is when I start to cry in pain. My thighs my lower back, and even my pelvis feels like someone is cutting me open. My muscles feel very weak, when I try to go downstairs I feel like I'll collapse on the floor. I end up taking 3 ibuprofen while drinking a lot of water and eating chocolate cookies, after an hour goes by the pain starts to subside. So yeah I believe I have Primary Dysmenorrhea. Sounds about right.

Vomiting, diarrhea, I was given Demerol at 13, then birth control no endometriosis. Had a tubal pregnancy. Had no kids cuz I couldn’t face 2-4 days in bed a month. It was finally, years later partially relieved by pressure on femoral arteries! Sad it still isn’t taken seriously😔

it enrages me how if this happened to men, there would be proper treatment instead of the doctors just saying 'its normal take some paracetamol'. the first day of my period is unbearable. i spend the whole day over the toilet crying and usually pass out atleast once. we deserve to be taken seriously, this level of suffering should not be brushed off as 'normal'. if nothing was wrong, your body wouldn't be telling you that there is.

The first few months of my period I really didnt have a problem. All I had to deal with is making sure I didn’t bleed through, and then it got worse. I started feeling really tired, and shaky. My thighs hurt a lot, I felt sick and I’d always throw up at least 2 times. On top of that I have really bad period pains, like crying can’t move can’t eat can’t think. More than sure this isn’t normal, any help? It also doesn’t always happen.

Kratom is effective for the pain as well and I find it better than NASIDS. I stopped taking NASIDS all together and opted to not do the surgery. I also suspect in my case fungal overgrowth may be a contributing factor which may be causing many disruptions in the whole region, I also get UTIs, have IBS, stomach issues.

I recently came off my pill to start trying to conceive. I went on my pill for 7 years to mask my period pain. Coming off my pill the pain has returned and is just the same. I cant believe i have to go through this until i fall pregnant. I stress and worry when my next period will be from the nightmare I have to go through each time. It feels like im dying, I can't move, i throw up with the pain, have diarrhea and feel dizzy to the point i feel I'm going to pass out. Wherever i am at the time my period comes on, i immediately have to get home to bed and try my best to sleep off the pain for a few hours. Its the worst few hours of my life, absolutely excruciating and unbearable, i have put off pushing for help/surgery for so long as im absolutely petrified of it 😢

I have been suffering with heavy periods and period pain for so long! Even on birth control I still get pains and bloating. When it comes to taking breaks off my pill the pain is so awful I can't move and can't walk because of the heavy flow and the pain, I find it so embarrassing to talk about but as I'm only 17 doctors refuse to listen to me and just don't believe the possibility that it could be something else and just hit me with the "it's normal" statement. I'm scared to take breaks off of my pill and I only manage to make it 3 or 4 days before I have to take the pill again. Over the counter drugs don't work like paracetamol and ibruprofen most of the time I just have to be in bed rest or curled up on the floor. Do you think this could be endometriosis?

I kept throwing up, some diarrhea and I was nauseous during the entire 3 weeks. It happened again earlier this year in January and I was sick for 3 weeks and now it’s happening again!!! It’s now October and it’s happening and it’s been 2 weeks already, it always starts when I get my period but happens randomly and I never get any answers. Does anyone experience this or has?? I can’t eat, I barely drink water, I can’t go to sleep because I can’t get comfortable laying down, hurts to move, my legs have the worst pain and they shake horribly. It’s the exact same pain I felt while in labor having contractions. Also I never had issues getting pregnant with my son, but we are trying to have a second child and we’ve been trying since January. Could this be a reason why?

I wanted to die because of the agonizing pain I experienced every single month all those years ago! Thinking about it now is devastating! The throwing up for two days, the piercing stabbing pain, the thirst and so much more! I hope there is help for the young women going through what I call a crippling disorder of mammoth proportions out there today! It is life changing and incredibly intrusive in a women’s daily life! I remember having to cancel engagements, call out from work and no matter where I was I made a mad dash for home before the horrible agony was to begin! After two to three days of my body betraying me I looked like a person who hadn’t eaten for weeks, my eyes sunken into my sockets and so weak it was difficult to move until I could eat again just to have the whole thing happen again next month! Believe me when I say prayers do not help and doctors were as incompetent as they are today! I had no choice but to take birth control pills and later on the depo provera shot which did help, thank God, but after many many years of suffering and finding the right doctors to finally help me!
