In this preview you will get a taste of the classical color palette to paint any type of skin complexion. See how the Zorn Palette is a reduction of this palette, I prepared two examples of flesh colors to apply them to real cases. Making color theory fun and practical!

Cesar Santos thanks Cesar, I’ll have to check them out. The color mixing aspect of your portrait painting DVD is excellent. Covering the local color, the tints and shades, as well as the value of warm and cool versions of the same value to keep things dynamic. I’m interested in the limited palette focus you include in this video. Turning the form on those simple spheres is a great idea, I will give that a try. I like how the form is simplified. Would be interested to get you thoughts on differences in color , generally in different areas of the head. More yellow in the forehead, more red in the nose cheeks and ears, more grey in the mouth and jaw.

Cesar Santos Cesar, maybe for a future video I’d be interested to have you revisit line. Specifically line weight, how weight can be used to suggest gesture or movement or light. Also how line can be used to describe form, through hatching, or just shape. Line seems like an underutilized aspect of drawing. Many artists jump to shading and value to describe form. I’m thinking of some wonderful silverpoint drawings of the renaissance masters that beautifully conveyed form with line work.

I am living in an apt for the 1st time since the 80s and have taken quite some time to figure out how to light my subject and palette. I have seen art supplies stored in a closet! I realize that I need to have a painting or a long drawing on the go so that I always have time to put in even 20 mins and it helped to put several pieces of furniture on casters. Lots of free info out there now to inspire you! _And it is ALL for free!_

Hi Cesar. Just bought this video. I really love it - especially the first half! You have inspired me to paint portraits. I was curious that after the zorn palette description, you do not use the three colors on the far left side of the palette for either skin tone. Are these colors optional? or are these colors strictly used when applying variation to the shadows?

@UltimateFashion1
@UltimateFashion1 4 жыл бұрын
Use solvent from Winsor & Newton. Same characteristics as turpentine, but odorless. However, it is still toxic to breathe. If you want to have non-toxic option, buy mineral spirits. They are odorless, less toxic and can be used as thinners... If you want something more oily... get safflower oil (dries longer) or liquin (dries fast - good for imprimatura)

I’ve enjoyed the mini-instructionals of your self-portrait. Do you cover all of this in your Secrets of Portrait Painting video to avoid purchasing the same information twice? $200 for 20 hours is more than fair; anyone who’s ever attended a workshop could tell you that. I spent (a very enjoyable) $600 for a week-long watercolor workshop with Mary Whyte, a phenomenal artist (plus hotel and food!)

You are a Great painter/artist Ceasar but that was too 'truncated' and poorly explained I feel. A need to demonstrate the "three dimensional" nature of Colur is essential - Hue Value, Chroma, Saturation etc. Plus the nature of Light, on local colour, direct, reflective give an the Umbra/Penumbra nature of the shadow transition. Love all your work!

It's not entirely true that more light on the skin means more chroma. Yes, it does get less black (more chroma), but it also gets more white (less chroma). In actuality, shadows are lower in value and more saturated, light areas are more light and less saturated. And during this light to dark transition, hue slightly shifts to whatever makes more sense to you. A very confusing topic tbh. Better off just color picking in photoshop to learn better. Hope this helps someone.
