🎨Paint Mixing Workshop - All about my Acrylic Pour Recipe - NO SILICONE🎨
I've tried to include everything I culd think of regarding my paint mixing recipe for acrylic pour painting.
I discuss ;
-the ratios I use,
-why I use GOLDEN brand paint and GAC 800
-how I get cells WITHOUT SILICONE
-how to mix your paint consistently every time
-why you should strain the Floetrol
-how to mix your own color combos
-advanced color theory
-how to be more environmentally conscious
This is a great demo of paint mixing for acrylic pouring for beginners.
I also have a shoestring budget acrylic pour painting video for beginners; • 👩‍🏫How To Fluid Art fo...
My blog post regarding color mixing;

I love how you like to repurpose bottles. I had jaw a couple jaw resections and have residual issues drinking from bottles so I really love the 23.7 oz LIFE WTR bottles with the built in spout. I recycle them for my paints. You might enjoy them cause the spout makes pouring them easy. And they go on sale all the time for 2 for $3. So if you're a big water drinker like I am, you might like these for not only the initial purchase but also for it repeated use for painting. I refill them several times before retiring them to my paint room. Lol.
@CourtneyHoelscher
@CourtneyHoelscher 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. They sound like great bottles for the purpose. At my house, we use the refillable jugs. Our local store sells reverse osmosis water for .36/gallon and the jugs last forever. The bottles I use have been dug straight from the trash in my room, when kids neglect to recycle. Thanks for noticing my efforts to reduce waste. It is very important to me. Happy painting!

@@CourtneyHoelscher oh I refill the bottles from a jug too it's just the spout has mad drinking so much easier for me when wearing the stupid mask I have to wear for my jaw. It's hard to open my jaw to drink from a cup or bottle but this with the spout have made my life so much easier. I just thought I'd recommend them for their size and ease of use. Hi Courtney, thanks for this informative video. I'm a fan of Golden as well. When you mix the paint, you have the marked line for the paint, floetrol, and GAC 800. Are the lines marked by weight or volume? I've seen a lot of artists mix paints by scales, which means by weight. I find it's easier by volume. Looking forward to your answer. Thanks!

You are so talented, I watch you all the time, but have not heard why you use so much gac800. I know it helps with cracking etc. but feel there is another reason for you. I see your paints are quite watery but you don't add water. Asking questions so I can maybe get something similar with more practice. Thanks for all you do.
@CourtneyHoelscher
@CourtneyHoelscher 5 жыл бұрын
The GAC 800 does help with cracking but it does so much more. It helps to make the paints more "watery" without loosing their binding quality. Also, GAC 800 is GLOSSY which counteracts the matt of the Floetrol, giving me a nice, smooth, semi-gloss finish.
@heelerjustheeler879
@heelerjustheeler879 5 жыл бұрын
Love your blog and videos! Two questions: How long does the unused mixture stay good? And do you find that it matters how opaque versus transparent the paint is? Do you tend to choose more transparent or more opaque pigments, or just go for the color you like best? Thanks!
@CourtneyHoelscher
@CourtneyHoelscher 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! The mixture separates and settles over time but seems to stay good for months. I have some colors that I don't use very much, that I mixed up last spring. They seem to still be fine. The transparent pigments will lay on top and the opaque will sink theoretically. Also, if a darker color lies beneath a transparent color, it will change its vibrancy, obviously.

Hi Courtney. Firstly may I say I am sorry about your last post. I hope that you have time to chill. Can I ask you a question? I also like the golden range, and am trying 5 parts liquitex gloss medium to 1 part golden fluid. I am also using the medium with mica, to required color. I am experiencing 'cracking'. Could this be caused by temperature, fan, airconditioning, or too much torching? Is there a way to thicken the paint? I understand if you are unable to answer at the moment, but if anyone else can comment, I would appreciate it. Cheers, Vivienne

Hi Courtney. I also love Golden I have every color both in fluid and tubes. I also have a ton of different mediums. My question is about Gac 800. Is it the same as the golden gloss medium? I heard it is they just renamed the Gac. I have so much of the gloss. I have all this paint as I ask my very large family to give me Golden product for all occasions :) I tell them I don't care what it is or how many colors I get that are the same lol. Anyway can I use the gloss medium in place of Gac

Does gac 800 increase drying time? How long, do you recommend, letting a canvas dry before varnishing? Thanks for teaching your ratios! I strain my floetral through a small net that I used to catch my fish before cleaning their bowl...lol...what ever works. Some people but a nylon sock on the pour spout.

They are inexpensive and I have had no more problems with my floetrol having lumps or "boogers". I do not strain my GOLDEN products; no need. Thanks for reaching out. I am glad to hear you appreciate my work and find my videos helpful as well.

Hi Courtney, Just found you and answers to several questions. I love the simplicity and sophistication of your work. Thank you for helpful videos. I do have one question. What do you use to strain paints and floetrol?
@CourtneyHoelscher

I use a paint strainer from the paint dept at the hardware store. It is a paper funnel with a fine mesh screen. You can buy them in multi packs for quite cheap.

I just found your channel and have been binge watching all your videos. I love the composition of your work. Thanks for all the information you share. The question I have is what is the consistency of your paint once you mix up your recipe? When you let it run off your stir stick does the stream immediately disappear into the paint or does it make a little mount before it disappears into the paint? i have heavy body acrylics so I can't just follow your recipe. Thanks again.

Thank you! I am so excited that you like my work. Good question. My recipe is VERY thin. I would say there is no mound on the surface of the puddle as it runs off ye stick. I have tried to come up with a consistency that is easily comparable. I have heard many compare their paint mixture to the consistency of cream? Link don't use cream. It is not water but it is whole milk? Hah! Are you going with the GAC 800 and Floetrol or are you trying a different pouring medium?

@@CourtneyHoelscher I have the GAC 800 but i'm saving it for a big canvas. Right now i'm just experimenting with straight floetrol. I will add the GAC 800 after a few color combo experiments. In several of your videos you mention how you like the fact that the GAC 800 gives a smooth finish and helps prevent crazing.. Is there any other reason a pouring medium is necessary? Some people say that adding floetrol and or water to the paint breaks down the binding agents and the poring medium is needed to in sure the paint binds with the canvas. Thoughts?
@CourtneyHoelscher
@CourtneyHoelscher 5 жыл бұрын
Yes the GAC800 has more binder in it, so as you think the paint, it still adheres to your substrate. I'm pretty sure Floetrol has binder as well. I would try to avoid adding water unless just sparingly. I have experimented with painting with just Floetrol and will tell you, you will get a lot of cells but the dried surface will be slightly bumpy and dull.

I don't use the High Flow as those are like ink. I use the 'Fluid' line. I have not used the 'heavy body' line but it should work fine, though might make your mix a bit thicker, though my paint mix is a bit too thin anyway for things other than swipe.

Love your paintings! Still trying to get a handle on this. Does it matter which Golden paints you use? High flow or heavy body acrylics and how does it change your mixing recipe?
@CourtneyHoelscher
@CourtneyHoelscher 4 жыл бұрын
Great question, Jackie! Yes. It matters. Golden Artist Colors make very different kids of paints. High Flow are the viscosity of water, but not watery. They are meant to be used like ink, think of your paint pens. These can be put into refillable markers and used to paint in a more illustrative way. Heavy Body is a very thick paint. The binders that are added to the pigment have a lot of three dimensional bulky texture and would be more useful for painting with a palette knife. The Fluid line is closest to the viscosity of my recipe's end results. If I were to use Heavy Body, my mix would be too thick and I'd have to alter my recipe. If I used the High Flow, my mix would be too thin and I'd have to alter my recipe. As I'm sure you've experienced, every artist has a different approach and a different recipe and this is why. The amount of pouring medium depends on which paint you use. I hope this helps!

So I’ve watched just about every one of your videos and love your work. I keep coming back to this video as I think your recipe seems to work great BUT I have a load of artists loft acrylic paint which I need to use up before I can justify buying any golden paints. Is there any chance at all that you could give any tips on mixing up artists loft to the consistency you get with golden! Bit cheeky but thought I’d ask 😁
@CourtneyHoelscher
@CourtneyHoelscher 5 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate your loyalty. I haven't worked with those paints so I can't say definitively. One general word of advise. Don't thin your paints with water. Golden has made the low viscosity line of acrylics, "fluid" by adding more binder while not compromising the higher level of pigment. It is not as simple as thinning with water. If you want to make your paint runnier, Invest in a decent "Pouring Medium". There are several on the market that are affordable. Use in place of water to make your paint go farther. I have heard good things about Liquitex Pouring Medium though I haven't experimented much with it, it seems to be more affordable. Thank you again for watching my library of videos. Those metrics will help my standing with KZfaq. Hopefully they will suggest my videos more. Let me know if that is helpful in the end.
