Painting rocks that look realistic is a great skill to have, once mastered they can be added to any painting project.
This is a complete tutorial working on a tonal rock study, with just one colour. Learning to focus on just the tones, the darks and the lights is an important skill to have. It's the tones, the dark crevices and the highlights where the sun shines, which will give the piece a realistic feel. I take you step-by-step through the whole process, explaining everything along the way. Paint along with me, or have a go after the tutorial and see how much you have learnt and remembered. Let me know how you get on, I would love to know.

Not even 2 minutes in and I’ve learnt something, thank you! Just seeing how you made the different consistencies of paint is brilliant! I’ve often struggled with the watery, milky and creamy consistencies always adding way too much water, so thanks so much for that demo. I shall be hunting out my pipettes 😁

That's a lovely thing to say, thank you very much indeed. At least you can see that the way I like to simply play with the paints and paper, it's amazing what you can create when you don't think too much. LOL Paul 🎨

This is fantastic! I've been having trouble remembering whether it's pulling things forward is for darks or pushing back for lights. Now, it will be an easy rule to remember. If I want to make a thing farther away or smaller paint it dark, because the part of the rock that went away was dark. If I want to make something closer, or taller and bigger add highlights, or add less dark. When you put a highlight on that small rock in front it actually looked taller and bigger. We will just have to learn by experience just how much dark or light to use. Thanks for this lesson. I told my husband that I'm gonna paint some rocks 'cause I can't fail at that. He thinks I can draw anything lol.

What a lovely comment you have just left, thank you so much. The good thing about painting rocks, is that to me, not one is the same, so you have a free rein to get creative with every rock you paint. Make them up as you go along, change the shapes, sizes and colours. Thank you for your kind words, Paul 🎨

I see what you're doing there at the beginning, but I use pan watercolors. Still, I see how preparing the different dilutions of paint beforehand is super-helpful. Love watching you do this. I see artists do the wet in wet all the time, but I still can't get the hang of it. How is the paper staying wet long enough so you don't get dry paper and hard edges? When you did the second smaller rock and sucked up some of the darkest paint - when I've tried to do that, it just sucks every bit of the color back up. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
