Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I love this. I especially love "don't be afraid to suck" because that was a huge lesson for me. When I first started, I had some natural talent and settled into that because I felt comfortable seeing myself as "naturally good" at my own level, but did not like the feeling of being a beginner so I didn't take risks and grow. A turning point for me (which seems so obvious now but was news to my younger self) was to learn that "natural talent" (something like having a naturally lovely line quality or ability to see beautiful compositions) does NOT define an artist (it can work against you if you identify with it and refuse to grow through failure) - we define our work by building our skills through a willingness to engage with success and failure - and probably failure is more important! I recently listened to Antrese Wood talk about "collecting failures" as in - go out and paint and see how much you can fail (while trying your best) - I thought that was a fun way to think about it.

Thanks for the great video! I am a "later-in-life" art student and finally taking my first painting class (Painting I) and the most intimidating thing I'm facing right now is putting together a good composition. @IchLiebeEISTEE123
@IchLiebeEISTEE123 2 жыл бұрын
I think of composition as something natural. Know the rules but you don‘t even have to apply it. Try to make it naturally by sketching random stuff over and over, until you find a sense for it.

Good morning Chris, from Cape Town, SA. Excellent advice. I followed a young SA artist, who's impressionist style I like. He recons he must have painted 800 - 1000 paintings before he reached his current level of proficiency. I retired last year Aug, started sketching and painting........ maybe, just maybe, when I get to 120 yo, I may just be good enough to compete with you😅 (joke) Love your style and your honesty. Come to SA and do some of our Karoo lanscapes. Thank you for your talks and tutorials. Regards Brian

...just wanted to add a 'note' for people to consider on the topic of "wasting $"... Dont ever trash old/ used/ 'bad' brushes. Sometimes you may come across an application where you can remove hair and/ or manipulate brushes for a certain shape or texture you're looking for. Especially in the case of doing hair, beards, grass, etc (fine details). Just food for thought.

You have a lot of videos and I can't find a specific one about this. (Sorry, it would take me days to watch them all.) How do you repurpose canvas' that are failed paintings. Do you just cover the old paint with Gesso, a couple layers of regular paint... use some sort of thinner? How about the spots with a very thick layer of dry paint... do you scrape it off with a knife or soften it up with chemicals and then get it off somehow?
@GalleryBry
@GalleryBry 3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps I can help. You never want to paint acrylic gesso over an oil painting because it can crack. Usually it’s best to just start over especially if it’s a painting you plan to sell. If you want to paint over an old oil painting the best option is to just paint over it with white or an oil primer. This will minimize cracking.
@GalleryBry
@GalleryBry 3 жыл бұрын
If the paint is too thick you can sand it but be careful if you are sanding cadmiums or lead. Do it outside with a mask. I paint studies on masonite panels I have cut at the hardware store. They are about 30 cents a panel. So you you don’t like them, you can just trash them or give them away and start fresh. Was this helpful at all? :)

I was raised by my mother to always challenge myself and then she looked at me like why do you overcomplicate stuff lol it's because she gave me the same math problems as my sister who was 4 years older and pushed me to read above my level and to always do more lol 😂😂😂😂 so I tend to complicate stuff and it pushed me so far in just a couple months. I find that when beginning for me I did a painting then watched a video on a Similar subject, how they did better, copy that and it may just be me where one rep is normally enough when physical, but when I like an artists trees I focus on that, but I don't like their water so I watch what not to do, and normally it's because it's not detailed enough. I want Mt paintings to look like irl

Really enjoy your videos. Will you make a video on how to find a subject to paint when painting from life…. I look around my home all of the time and never paint from life because I don’t know what to paint etc. I hope this question makes sense. So I end up not painting. When I a, with my art friends they seem to “know” what to paint…??? Help ;)

It can be difficult to get digital media to replicate traditional media. It takes time to customize brushes in procreate to get them the way you like them. One way to do it is to squint at your subject and simplify the values and colors into blocks. If this is a challenge you could edit the image with filters in photoshop or procreate. Was that helpful at all?

@@heterosapien8426 amen, can't go wrong. In terms of canvas, IF I buy them, I get level 3 michaels(gallery wrapped) cuz no frame is needed. Obviously when they are 50-70% off!! Anymore tho, I enjoy making my own ACM or masonite panels. The quality I make them tho, I save approximately $40-$65 a PANEL! and they are customized to MY liking. So, it's worth it to me. Maybe if I was selling 4-6 paintings every week, I would buy the same panels from Natural Pigments, but, I dont know very many collectors, and I just started last year! I'm a welder/TIG artist and a musician, and I put quality into EVERYTHING I do. Idk, $80 for a lead oil primed linen acm panel, as opposed to $16 for a homemade one....seems like kinda obvious, 3 hours of my time is worth $65, not like I would've painted my Mona Lisa within that time frame anyway, if I'm inspired to paint, I paint. If I'm inspired to build a few panels, I build panels. Pretty simple lol 😆
