After 10 years, I am finally beginning to SEE first time how stepping way way way back makes all the difference. Also, like you said, big shapes first. I've gone back on 100 plus paintings over the years spending 5 hours here and there every one of them and you just cannot "fix" things that way. You have to do it from the ground up, not patching afterwards.

I say repeat your tips like mantra, a rosary, that always remind me to squint, simplify , large shapes, start with the dark, verticals dark, flats are light, sky the lightest . But the best thing I learned to not use so much thinner! Oh my gosh,a game changer! Thank you Chris for generously sharing your knowledge . Can finally move on.

Like you, it didn't take long to realize going to workshops, while fun, wasn't all that much of a learning experience. In days, or weeks (or months) I began to forget some of the finer points I learned, and my notes were usually just scribbles. I soon woke up to the wisdom of buying the video. I could play it as many times as I felt necessary to learn a point. Some of my videos have been played hundreds of times, and some once or twice. BUT, I still have all those videos and all that information and I can tap into it anytime I please.

Thanks for the video. After watching this video, I came to the realization of how important is to have a good drawing before attempting to paint anything and working from live will definitely is a plus. Colors change with light by the minute and observing those changes will make your paint better. Practice and dedication will also help you along the way. Great advice and great talk. I truly appreciate talking about specifics that in time they will make a change and mark our paintings. Blessings and be safe.

Dude let me tell ya. I started out really detail oriented and stuff and it was going fine. But the moment I found my style of expressionism and started simplifying, felt like it's the hardest thing ever. I suck at it. I always come back to ur channel to learn a thing or two and then go back fail and come back and fail again. It's a vicious cycle 😂

perfect timing, the algorithm sometimes just knows :) I have been more down on myself than often because I realised I am too slow. I guess I have this idea because of the deadlines I created for myself for large paintings. I think I will do small studies daily so it can be a small practice/study before working on a large one, this might the feeling of 'being behind' feel like it's not a big deal. subscribing and coming back :)

Hello again Chris. I'm always interested in what you have to say. I've learnt a lot from you and others here on KZfaq. One subject that very few if any artists talk about is "colour blindness" Many people can draw very well and they can see red, green and blue pretty well, but many might have a weakness in one or two of the primaries. Maybe they see yellow OK, but the reds and greens look weaker, not as vivid as the same red that you look at not as strong as the green that you see. To paraphrase Mr Spock from Star Trek "It's colour Jim, but not as we know it" So they can see colours, but not as you see them. They get a weaker picture. Naturally it's rather hard to quantify because everyone's a bit different to some extent. As you can imagine, because they know they're colour blind, most will think that they'd be making fools of themselves if they ever started painting in oils. Mixing the colours would seem a daunting task to many and they would not even attempt to start painting in oils. And so because of that many will never have the pleasure of producing and then selling their very own work. That's rather sad. Is there any advice you could give them. I suppose the obvious first piece of advice would be to just stick to black and white. But is there anything else you can think of that might help them Kind regards - Chris in Thailand

Great video and so inspiring to watch that painting coming to life. I kept thinking you had finished in a certain area and then you go and take it to the next level. Plus all the stuff you put in the background. You must have endless patience. Really good to watch. I love your paint talk videos. A question for next time maybe. Have you ever used Liquin original? If so what do you think of it? I used it a lot a few years ago and now I am finding the top layers of a couple of my paintings have cracked and have no idea what to do with them, any suggestions?

Can you speak to safety when painting plein air? Today I went to start my third plein air landscape at a remote location behind a dam. The last two times I cased the spot, it was abandoned. Today, five people showed up as I started to unload my gear. They didn’t (or wouldn’t) speak English and one kept scowling at me. So I left and I won’t return.

I agree mostly but there is also a negative side to getting coaching where you can either learn bad habits from a tutor with bad habits or loosing your own identity and becoming a clone of your tutor so it very much depends on the tutor you pick being willing to let you be yourself and find your own style and the tutor actually having the skill to teach. Lowery is a prime example where had he had lessons I doubt he would have been to paint in his unique style for long!
@paintcoach
@paintcoach 3 жыл бұрын
What you are talking about doesn’t really come into play for years. I hear people bring that point up a lot “ you don’t want to be a clone of another artist” I think that’s kind of a silly thing to worry about when you are first starting out. Worry about getting good. That will keep you busy for at least a decade.
