Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Well, today I sold my second painting. This is kind of exciting in a way, but your right about the gallery thing. I was asked to hang some paintings where I sold my first painting, she acquired 4 more paintings costing 65k. When I saw my work in the same room, I wanted to take mine down. I have very mixed feelings. Yet in a way I should feel honored. Oh well I’ll “go get painting”. Thanks coach. Btw just got back from a trip to Big Bear, CA. did some plein air, had a blast!

Your studio looks almost exactly like my apartment in Philadelphia when I was in art school. I had a breakthrough in my work in 2014 but had to leave my hometown in 2017 because of serious political persecution from a criminal communist group in Philadelphia. Since then I’ve been in a deep rut, but I’m painting again and your channel is heartwarming and refreshing. What I like most about you is you’re unlike any painter I knew back in Philly when I was in school. You’re a great teacher. I also like Sargent - I was at the Sargent/Manet show at the Met, circa 2003. Guiseppe Ribera’s works were there as well. What you’re doing rocks - you’re the real thing, and that makes me feel less alone. Thank you. -SB

I have three favourite painters. Firstly, old master, John Singer Sargent love his work. Secondly, Yupari, style pretty much like Sargent. And Thirdly, Michael James Smith, I love this guy because (in my eyes) he is the best photorealistic painter other than a Russian guy who I can't think of his name at the moment Viktor something. These three are my top three but obviously there are many brilliant artists out there, Chris being one. So there you have it. Ps, I'm not sure what the big deal is with being first, second etc to comment

As Mark carder says....Draw...mix(colour mixing)....paint (values).... is the key for good painting...I always buy that

creating the focal point. brushstrokes by small brushes, dark shadows color.

Clyde Aspevig and James Poulson are my favorites. Clyde has some content on line but James is a popular painter in Montana.

My "drawing" has been my strength, but it also holds me back in terms of painting. I have found that sketching with paint helps me to hone my skills with a brush, and also helps me to begin any painting faster, because brushes leave far more information than a pencil in much less time. :)

Check out Stuart Davies, a tonalist landscape painter who also does just that, produces some very interesting pieces.

@@suzanneleighton7466 I have seen his work... and don't know why anyone would say they are a "Tonalist"... that's like saying, "I am an impressionist who only uses three colors" It just sound silly. lol

@@chrisgriffith1573 I thought that tonalists tried to convey a mood with different values and brushwork, I found it quite interesting when I started to use oils and could just go straight in to a painting.

@@suzanneleighton7466 I always thought of them as the "Goth" movement of modern impressionism... lol. The Tonalists doctrine lends itself to just about any artwork style, but mainly ends up being typified by overcast moody or intensive foggy or hazy landscapes- very emo to be sure- but if I read you correctly, then nearly ANY artwork falls into tonalism?

@@chrisgriffith1573 yes I suppose so but I’m no expert on tonalism 😄, so someone else might have a different opinion. I have tended to work with quite a limited palette as I’m fairly new to oil painting so I can see where you are coming from.

Andrew Tischler for sure - Mr Detail :) and there's a guy Tischler goes plein air painting with in New Zealand called Samuel Earp. He has a great KZfaq channel with lots of helpful info.

Have you checked out Stuart Davies, tonalist landscape painter, lives in France? He has a very loose style and paints straight onto the canvas which takes a lot of planning in your head!! Also young British Portia t and plein air landscape artist Daisy Simms Hilditch is attracting a lot of interest in the contemporary art world.

Question: Love your passion for painting and for teaching others. I’m a new Patron and really like the long form videos there. How do you store between layers while they dry? And how do you store paintings long term while they cure? Keeping dust from curing into the paint is of interest to me, also. Thanks!

All of my painting tutorials are done pretty much in one sitting so I never wait for layers to dry. I really like working wet into wet paint. I have never really had to worry about painting collecting dust while they dry. They become touch dry in about a week so I just put them somewhere they won't be touched or bumped into

Hey there...may i ask you ?when paint on paper pad is needed to prime with gesso? And second are there gesso for oils and gesso for acrylics?

How do you know how much to charge family and friends? Or how to put a price on your artwork? Sometimes It’s hard for me to determine how much to charge for a commission piece. I always go lower in price just to find them shocked expecting way more. Still trying to find that balance.

Why is that I feel watercolour is seamless, blends so well, highlights are glowing with white of paper unlike oils? Is it true that watercolour is more vibrant than oils?

I sell my work as soon as people offer. I personally have the hardest time creating a price. I give myself minimum wage plus expenses.

This is the second time I have heard you say “painting from life is better” and not saying one reason why.

Its probably because painting from pictures only allows you to see two dimensions and its harder to grasp the concept of depth when painting the subject. Basically painting from life can help bring more life to your painting

"Loose" doesn't always mean "no detail" or "less detail" ... take your example- John Singer Sargent... ok, you just said that in the video... KaAAy...
