Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I am sure a lot of beginners watch your videos and find them really useful, but do not under estimate the value of these motivation videos that you put out. They are very inspiring for professional artists as well as they must be for new painters, as no matter how long you have been working as a painter you will always sometimes loose your way.

This is the best explanation I’ve heard about how painting captures so much more than a photo can - and therefore why we shouldn’t be copying photos exactly as they are! We’re artists, not cameras!

Can i share a story here,? Oh why not, so I recently tried to paint something almost impossible, just a regular urban street scene but in 4 dimensions based on a conversation i heard on Joe rogans podcast, the guest was explaining a weird math problem of 4D spheres to Joe and there was no real way for him to show a representation of the idea, just some graphic, he said, "we dont really have any good ways to represent this, so i thought, what if i could paint that with something people can identify.. A month later after posting it on Instagram, the chief Editor of Physics Today magazine wrote me and asked if it was really my pic and if they could Print it in the magazine... Crazy yeah.. Magic can happen, so if you get an idea and dont even know if itll work, you gotta try it out no matter how weird..

You had me until you said a photograph is inferior. I'm a photographer. I enjoy shooting landscapes and believe me, a photograph can definitely capture a feeling. As you mentioned with painting, with photography, you also use skills, equipment and good light to capture the feeling/story or beauty in what you see, and with photoshop these days, one has great control over colour too. The whole thing is a very creative process and with photography there is problem solving too. You plan it, you study the light, time of day, perspective with different lenses, from multiple angles, you choose the framing for the story/feeling you're capturing. Anyways, it's actually more similar than you think, based on what I hear you say about painting. Also, your sessions are very informative. Thank you for the teaching you put out there.

Photographs can be incredible when shot by someone with awesome skills, but those photos are most probably not what beginner artists like me are using as references. I use photos I take myself, and they would most definitely be inferior to the real thing.

I have really enjoyed your videos in recent weeks. They have really helped my paintings. Thanks for that. I have a question about celebrity portraits. I see that you do a lot of them. If you are going to sell them how do you get the rights to them? I have searched all over the internet and it seems very hard to find any good pics of celebrities that aren't copyrighted.I also wondered if you paint with any other mediums such as watercolors or acrylics?

I agree with the value of a painting being so much more than a photo that can be taken with a phone. Stopping and looking at a painting that shows the persons character is incredible. I also like your comment about how achieving a painting helps build confidence in other areas of your life. I have become a better business person since I became an artist. Great to hear this, although I I still feel some of the first oil paintings I ever did, were my best. Is it possible to loose skill rather than develop it?
@crmfineart
@crmfineart 3 жыл бұрын
What we refer to skill is mostly about understanding of visual elements and how we intepret them. (Developing our minds eye) This can easily become dull if we don't paint for a long time. Another thing is, we learn to paint using the whole arm and not just wrists, muscle memory. This skill will stay even if we don't paint. Our mind forgets things, our body never forgets.
@ababy6074
@ababy6074 3 жыл бұрын
With this style of painting, do you have to do it in one sitting? What if you have to leave the painting and come back to it on another day? Can you still edit it? I currently paint using an underpainting and then thin glazes so I can put it down between sittings but your paintings look like they are all wet-into-wet and done in a sitting.

Big fan of the channel, i had a question if u don't mind me asking, how do you stop your brushes from turning into rock after painting? even when i use paint thicker the brushes still dry out and becomes solid like rock
@crmfineart
@crmfineart 3 жыл бұрын
If you are using Acrylics, its good to keep brushes dipped in the water when painting and cleaning afterwards with soap water especially the root hair of the brush. Its where all the paint gets stuck. For oils, brushes wont dry quickly. You can use turpentine to clean the brushes. For the rock hard brush, use thinner Spirit. Keep the brush dipped for an hour or two. Paint should come off easily. And then clean the brushes with detergent soap. If the hairs are damaged, once the brush dries dip the brush in the milk and let it dry. Some shape will be retained.

i have a question. Is it okay to start with digital painting without knowledge about actual painting? Because I wanted to start painting in quarantine so I found an old drawing pad at home and tried a thing or two on it but the progress is extremely slow. I was just wondering if I am a slow learner or digital painting is actually harder than painting on canvas?
@kaan8863

I was a graphic artist for over 30 years. I used to paint in watercolors and loved drawing with graphite. But, the publishers wanted everything done on computers so I rarely touched a pencil or brush for decades. I more or less retired from graphic arts over the last few years and started working again in paint, pencil, and pastel. There is no comparison. I love the feel of the paper, the sound of the graphite or pastel, the texture. I love the feel of the brush in my hand and making beautiful strokes. If nothing else just get some good graphite pencils and good paper and learn to draw. Or get some acrylic pens and draw and play. There is a fellow called Peter (Peter draws) he has so much fun drawing or doodling with pens. Check him out.

I got a question, what s the difference between a lets say cadmium red light and cadmium red deep hue. Can someone please explain how this color things work and which red is the best primary.
@crmfineart
@crmfineart 3 жыл бұрын
I think cadmium red light has high saturation I find it useful for for portraits, still life. Very useful when painting reflected light. Haven't used cadmium deep.
@DannySabraArt
@DannySabraArt 3 жыл бұрын
Any color that has the world "hue" means it is a mixture of several colors that is supposed to be similar to the pure color of Cadmium red light. So the only issue with that is that when you use a hue color to mix another color with it can get muddier quicker because it's already a mixture of several colors. When you use a pure color like cadmium red light, it's a single pigment and will be more vibrant and have more potency in a mixture of color than a hue..

@@urbanfidler6702 Thats a great question as well! Maybe i should make a video about that on my channel one of these days.
