In this video I show my method for painting heat stains onto scorched metal surfaces. A useful technique for adding visual interest to large gun barrels, flamers or flamethrowers, motorcycle exhaust pipes, jet thrusters, etc.

A tip for anyone who wants it: If you want to really elevate this effect, you can use black paint on a fine detail brush around the "burnt" area to dot in little pieces of soot and char. If you want to get really crazy you can use dry black pigment (like you'd use for dust effects) for this effect too.

Always love finding a nice, simple tutorial with a handful of ingredients and a great result, that also uses paints I've already got on hand. Makes it feel like I'm adding a new tool to my toolkit rather than needing to buy a specific paint or figure out a substitute. I've got all three of those washes so I can use this immediately, and I definitely plan to.

@@HeroesBosses I will be. I am looking for a good model of the Icarus from the original Planet Of The Apes 1968. I see a few out there that seem to have the wrong back section. I know Wilco Models made a really good one and has closed down years ago I found out. Any tips?

@@HeroesBosses Not sure. I am so far out of the loop on all this stuff. Remember I am 60 yrs old and haven't touched a model since I was about 15-16 yrs old. I am feeling inspired again and in need of a hobby and after watching the original Planet Of The Apes I loved that ship as a kid and still think it just looks cool. I want to find one if possible to build and use some of your techniques on the nosecone and engines.

Use any black paint and a soft brush - like a cheap makeup brush. Get a little paint on the brush, dab most of it off on paper towel then lightly dab it on the end of the barrel.

Hello there kind sir. I am pretty new to the 40k hobby (I have only painted 5 marines and a captain so far) and I would like to add this effect to some exhausts on my future models but I don't own the proper washes or brush to do so. Do you think that I could achieve similar effect with regular paint with more water added than usual? (I read somebody in the comments tried it but I don't know if "watered down" means added water or more specialized thinning medium since I could imagine that if you overdo it with the water you could get substance which no longer sticks to the surface) If so what ratio would you recommend? Also I don't own any brushes with particularly soft bristles. Would it be possible to use regular brush? These are all things I could try first but I feel like asking someone more experienced is better than trial and error since that can be costly sometimes. In any case this was an excellent video! Quick, well structured, shot and voiced and it was to the point. Thank you for your work!
@HeroesBosses

Hey there - glad you like the video :) You can use paints rather than washes (I've never done it, but I don't see why it wouldn't work) - I'd probably water them down with normal water 4:1 water:paint - and they will stick - you just need to give it time to dry between layers. And make sure you're only using a very small amount of paint at a time - the brush should be mostly dry. You can do with with a regular brush - I add dirt spatter all the time this way by dabbing on tiny amounts of watered down paint onto the feet and clothes of models. If you WANT a soft bristle brush, makeup brushings from a dollarstore or something similar is the way to go. I hope this helps!

how long does a wash or shade take to dry? I attempted this and I felt the colour was too light. could it be that i didnt wait long enough for it to dry?
@HeroesBosses
@HeroesBosses 2 жыл бұрын
You need to wait 2-3 minutes between layers, and put on 3-4 layers. You definitely want it to dry between layers, otherwise you'll wipe off the previous layers.
