I mistakenly painted the edges ("frenching" you called it I guess) and so the trim paint around the window was extended out on to the sides of the window trim I absolutely hated the way that it looked its impossible on a white house to make a perfectly straight line where the window trim and plywood siding meet as there is caulking making for a really uneven and very unsymmetrical surface. Then I saw a vid where you explained how a painter masks windows and it suddenly made sense. A lifesaving moment for sure

I just painted a room today using a two gallon cut in bucket with a one gallon screen. I also used your technique of a 4 inch roller, Wooster in this case, and the Purdy XL Glide brush. What a great job. Thanks so much for the tips. It made it so much easier.

I totally agree with making the guys supply their own brushes. I quit letting anyone use any of my good brushes. They never keep them clean but if they have to buy a few 20$ or more brushes themselves they learn pretty quick the importance of cleaning their tools properly. I try to clean my brushes about every hour even if I'm still using it and I never ever leave paint in a brush when taking breaks

That is a good idea marking each guys brush, I haven't done that personally but I did have guys who would claim a brush or tool and mark it themselves telling the other guys on the crew that it was theirs.

I am not a professional painter but I do like the edge of all the trim painted. If the eves are the same color as the body I spray them first. Then I brush and roll the fascia at the roof line. Most importantly I caulk all the trim boards to get a nice line with tape later. Then I wrap the windows leaving the trim exposed. I spray all the trim with two coats ( windows and all trim boards elsewhere). Then I rewraped the windows and wrap all the other trim with paper and tape. Then spray the body twice back rolling the first coat if the paint was deteriorated. Pull all the masking and your done except for minor touch ups. Edges of all the trim are painted with very sharp lines at the body and trim due to the caulking and tape. Sounds like it would take longer than painting the body first but it doesn't for a non professional painter as I can't cut a line at the edges of the trim with a brush without tape or touching up due to bleeding under the tape. Also spraying is much faster than rolling and brushing the trim for a non professional painter

I've painted the Hardie already because my thinking was to mask down the side of the door and window on the Hardie to paint the side of the trim. I get some bleed through and it pisses me off!

In all fairness, painting the faces is actually called Hollywood, cutting in the sides is referred to French style. I, almost always, cut in the sides of all trim. You get much better looking trim. I paint a lot of older homes, circa 1912. I realize that it may be standard practice in your area not to. It sure speeds up the painting process, that is for sure.

I notice you overspray a little onto the trim with the house body color - If your house body color is dark like a dark blue or red and the trim is white, do you just try to limit your spray so the darker color doesn't bleed through the white/light color or do you have to do multiple coats on the trim now?
@Mike-qo4kp

They spray onto the edges of the window trim and then paint trim paint over the over spray that lands there mostly for efficiency and i think it looks much better. If the sides of window trim match the trim and not the color of the house it looks weird and basically impossible to get clean straight lines in my experience

Hi, I have a 1800 SF home and want to paint all the rooms, doors and trim. I am not a professional painter but rather a DIYer and jack of all trades. I’ve been looking at the Graco Prox17 for some of the ceiling work (being I have vaulted ceilings) and walls and also looking at the Graco TrueCoat 360 VSP Handheld Paint Sprayer for the trim and quick jobs like chairs, fence boards, a few small items here and there etc. Should I go with the Prox17 only or buy both to make my life easier? Or, should I roll and brush the trim instead. Although I have noticed that rolling and brushing trim doesn't come out as nice as spraying. Also, what are your thoughts on the Graco VSP 360 Handheld Painter Sprayer and is it a solid unit? I seem to read mix reviews on that particular sprayer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a few prox17 sprayers for small projects, trim, doors etc. They are great little machine's but if i was in your shoes i would rent a industrial sprayer for a day for a higer volime output and faster production. Do all of your prep first so all thats left is spraying & then go rent one. most rental shops will let you rent one for 4 hours, minimizing cost.

Where I live most of the windows and trim have the edge or frenching painted. The ribs on the siding here run vertical. I've been looking for a video that shows how to do the edge of the window trim and other trim. I do not have the skill to free paint the edge or frenching due to the roughness of the siding. I've sprayed the window trim first after masking the glass and then remasked the windows their trim and then sprayed the body which gives a good edge between the body and edge of the trim on the windows. Used white tape to masked the rest of the trim (other than windows) and rolled and hand painted the edge. Then used a 1 1/2 inch brush to touch up bleeding on the body. The other senerio is I've masked the glass and sprayed the body and all the trim with the same paint first and the used white tape to mask the body to roll and hand brush in trim and window trim edges and then touched up with a 1 1/2 inch brush any bleeding around the tape on the body. Would appreciate a video on how to hand paint the edge or ideas on how an inexperience painter should approach spraying when the edge or frenching is to be painted. Do you spray the house or window trim first? Do you use caulking to prevent bleeding on the body?

Frenching?😂 The proper way to do it is to paint the entire trim white because the trim is the trim and it needs to look complete. You should have just said “ we don’t do that part because we don’t care about crisp clean finishes because who cares” 😂😂😂 I feel like it’s a term that a professional made up just to cut corners because a real dedicated painter who puts love and detail into his work knows that the little details are the ones that make your work stand out. Yeah time is money but money comes and goes but good dedicated painters who put love into what they do don’t, believe that.
