i feel like the more you paint the less colors you use, because you start having preferences and no longer need to try out every color on earth

That's true! Sometimes when i look at different colors it inspires me to paint but as you paint more, you learn to mix those colors yourself too

Definitely, I’m an animal artist and I find that colors I tend to not use are purple, orange, peach or light flesh tones, and black. And I tend to use, blue, green, umbers, yellow ochre, and I use very specific colors so not just any old blue or green. Those colors tend to do everything I need including making beautiful grey or “black” tones without the need for pre-mixed versions. It’s especially nice because I prefer cool tones when it comes to grey or black and I really like the blue to show through.

Your comment about watercolours as an introductory medium is so spot on! I think as a kid that is what stopped me from developing my artistic tendencies, because everything ended up a dull, wet blob at school. Only as an adult was I introduced to proper watercolour paper and got to finish a painting properly.

It was a revelation when someone mentioned they had gouache introduced in school! The right watercolor paper really is a deal breaker for working with watercolor!

YES! I don't know why the art-teachers in school keep doing that ._. I used to hate working with watercolors in school. My teachers always made the students buy very specific brands of watercolor, but no one ever even mentioned that there was such a thing as watercolorpaper. I mean I get it, this paper is expensive, compared to standard paper, but I think we never really used more than maybe 5 sheets of paper in one whole year. I think if the teachers had bought a big stock of watercolor-paper and made everyone pay 2-3€ per schoolyear, it would have been the much smarter choice... Maybe it didn't even needed to be proper watercolorpaper. Even a sturdy drawingpaper would have been AMAZING to work on, compared to this awfull thin stuff that we had to use. My schoolexperience really tuned me away from watercolor for a long time. Learned to love it years later, when I finally got proper paper.

Totally agree re: giving kids watercolors. I remember doing watercolor painting occasionally in school. At best we were given sketch paper to paint on, and at least once we were given newsprint. :P And aside from the paper issue, watercolor is so fiddly, so unforgiving of mistakes, so difficult to master, that it's kind of crazy to give it to little kids, unless you're going to do a long-term watercolor unit in their art instruction and actually teach them skills. Gouache is much more forgiving and intuitive; it should be the default paint for children.
@alanna6034
@alanna6034 2 жыл бұрын
Poster paint can be a good alternative too! Gouache is kind of expensive and poster paint is more available to buy in stores (in my country at least). When I was given watercolor as a child I got so frustrated with my paper warping and ripping (I didn’t understand how it worked), so gouache and poster paint was much more easier to work with.

Nice work! I like the idea of painting over a completed sketch; hadn't thought of doing that! You also made some interesting points, like about not buying sets of paints if you don't think you'll use all the colors. My goal at present is to learn to mix well enough that I don't need more than a few basic colors. Fewer tubes mean less money spent, and less space taken up in a drawer. New subbie.

I just wanted to tell you that I’ve seen so many gouache artists on KZfaq and while everyone is great, the way you paint skin and portraits makes the most sense to me. I picked up painting about 2 months ago. I’m an avid manga artist who hadn’t used paint since first grade. When I first started painting with gouache I just honestly couldn’t get the hang of it. But after watching you paint, I’m slowing starting to get the hang of it! thank you :)

I haven't personally tried gouache but from what I can tell by the things you said in this video, oils would probably suit you as well. Oils are also rather buttery to work with and nothing tops the way they blend. There is definitely a learning curve to oil paints and yeah you will need more supplies than just the paint, brushes and some paper (paper suitable for oil paints exists, but it's not my first choice). My most important advice is to get something to thin the paint, and be mindful of the fact that it dries extremely slowly - meaning it's easy to accidentally smudge everywhere. Have separate brushes that you use for light and dark colours as you work. Always wash your brushes properly after every session, because once they dry they dry. Hope you get to try it one day and good luck!

I love gouache also. I was scared originally because the surface is resoluble, but it turns out that I actually like the fact that the surface is “open,” so you repaint a dry spot and make it lighter or darker or warmer or cooler. The one thing that bothers me about gouache is that the value can change as it dries, although it is certainly not the only medium where that happens. Do you find the value shift to be a problem, how do you handle it? I think you said you paint relatively dry, with little water, so maybe you don’t see it as much.

If it helps you feel any better, while I have seen one artist who kept the lid covers on the Miya gouache, I couldn’t get my unit to close with the lids present.
