Paint Your Way Out of Artist's Block: Abstract Painting Demo

Watch as I work on painting my way out of artist's block and play with an abstract sketchbook painting. Like most artists, I've been there before and I’ll be there again, feeling stuck and uninspired, but this exercise really helped me break free from that painting funk.

To start, I took a previously painted page in my sketchbook and used it as the background for my abstract play piece. It's amazing how a simple base can set the tone for the entire piece. Now, let's talk colors! For this abstract mixed media painting, I decided to work with a vibrant palette of acrylic paints, including Pyrrole red, permanent magenta, mars black, light blue permanent, lime green, green gold, violet, and titanium white. These colors brought life and energy to my artwork and worked with the background that was already established.
As I continued to work on my mixed media sketchbook painting, I incorporated torn pieces of painted paper, adding texture and depth to the composition. Mixing different mediums and materials can truly transform your artwork and ignite your creativity.
Throughout the process, I made a conscious effort to stay focused and keep painting until I felt genuinely satisfied with the result. It's all about pushing through that artist's block and finding joy in the act of creation. Remember, abstract painting is a journey of self-expression and experimentation, so don't be afraid to take risks and let your intuition guide you.

I guess one of the main reasons we get stuck is trying to make something "good", "beautiful" or "worth it" not allowing ourselves to try and just embrace every piece weather we like them or not. Thank you for your kind words! I couldn't agree more. That is the tricky part of creating, the desire and expectation to make something "good enough" is usually what hinders us from doing just that. So shifting the focus to enjoying the process and not the result frees us up from those expectations. With that said, we all have the desire to create beautiful art. It's always a balancing act.😊

Hi Chris I like the way you work, I’m not an schooled artist but I love to play with colors shapes and so forth…I have no ambitions to become a professional artist or sell anything…I just want to enjoy what I’m doing…..I think I like your free spirit…it motivates, inspires and encourages me to keep going….there are few other u tube artists have a similar impact, I’m lucky that I found artists less judgmental and value more freedom in doing art…recently I’m diagnosed with big C,it was a shocking experience, I’m hoping my love of art making help me to endure this difficult journey and recover…. I like swatching out colours to give me inspiration, I do graded swatches of two colours till I blend them together in the middle to see what range i can create. But colour is my thing, i guess you could lay out mark making shapes in little armies and let them have a fight if mark making is your thing. I guess just having a paintbrush in your hand and taking it for a walk on canvas just things to do to connect you to your work.

Allo😊 ! First it waz exiting to see you in your studio ! The painting on the chevalet ....i think in english its hizel... is amazing ! I dont know if its finish or not but i love it.....the colors and the composition 👍 and i prefer the painting you made on the video with the final touch of blocking with the wite and green gold ! Im always enjoying your vidéos ! And now after à hard day of rénovation and all the process of mooving im ready to start painting befor bed.....🙃almost 11p.m here in Canada ! But i need it so mutch ! I like both the first and the second painting. (even though the second painting has a headless guy with a beer belly in it😂) But I love the thick white golden paint and the marks you made. When you pulled the tape off before I saw a horses head. Glad you kept painting. Interesting where it can take you . When I get stuck, I find it works to take a break from it and do something totally different. Most of the time, I get back to the canvas refreshed and enthusiastic. Looking forward to your next video. PS. I also liked the painting on your easel at the beginning of the video.

Thanks for sharing the fact that you get stuck and your process of working through it. My style is nothing like yours but I do enjoy watching your videos and admire the final product. I always work on multiple paintings at once so that I never have to wait for layers to dry and it also helps to give me time to think about what to do next. If I start to question something I place the canvas on a shelf across the room and that helps to give me a better idea of what to do next or what to change since I usually work flat with my face right in it. Some things look great when I'm so close to it but have a very different feel when upright and a few feet away.

Thank you so much, Sasha! That is a great technique for gaining a fresh perspective on your paintings. I do something similar with canvases and wood panels. I have a few spaces on the walls of my small studio that I reserve for works in progress so I can sit with them for a little while.

I appreciate and respect you talking about getting stuck and creative blocks. We just returned from the Bryce Canyon area and I feel inspired by all the unique shapes and colors. Getting out in nature helps me. I’ve also covered an entire piece with gesso. Another artist also said just do something no matter how simple. Thanks again!

Block is such a weird thing and I am lucky enough not to have to worry about making a living from art - as a teacher of English - so when I get blocked, I can show a friend, show my mom, hide it away, and very often I can just move on... And we all know that some pieces hide away for years... the discussion shoud be continued, but I really hope you're in the swing right now.😊

Hi Chris - I think this is one of the most complex vids you have made - engaging not only in the production but also the meta-production (artist's block) of a work. What a transformation this piece went through, and by the end I was missing the green bits of collage. I guess that at the heart of that is how we feel about abstraction, and I you seem to really master the carving stage at the end - I am totally useless at that!

I use a view finder that 8s much smaller than my painting. After finding a little gem, i try to reproduce it on a larger scale painting. Ie. 12x12 canvas. Find 5x7 fem and paint it in another 12x12 canvas.

Awesome man...I just cleared a 60”x 60” canvas....that I worked on for two months!! The beauty of painting is that you can do this....hopefully not too often🙃😬😊 Appreciating your honesty as it helps us artists as a collective where we do get into a “funk!” 😊🙌... it happens! I am going to incorporate paper as you are doing when starting again on the big canvas.😊

Hey Susan! Yeah, 60"x 60" is a tough size to start over. But like you said, the beautiful thing is that we can. I have several paintings that have been sitting in a corner for a while in the same state of being... I'm close to using what I have as the background for a new painting. 😊🖌️🎨

I quite like the rain, but at the moment standing out in it is not an option, it's freezing with bits of ice and it's torrential here at my place in Tasmania, and muddy but thats the tassy winter for you! And yes I remember Rosie the robot in the jetsons! That ages me! 😄😄 Cheers!

@@chrisloudart where I am I'm the 20 acres is tucked in a nook of a bigger Ridge. So it's like a mini environment all on its own, so that also means that because we're below the tree line, the sun starts to disappear by the end of April which is mid autumn here. It's not dark though it just means there's no heat of the sun to keep the ground warm to grow veggies so I've got a little green house. The sky is bright so we still get enough energy for the lights and the generator gets turned on for charging the batteries it's a 12v solar system with the generator as back up, not sure if I mentioned that before or not. Anyway, I'm waffling, the rain starts towards the end of April, and it often continues till late November, but it's not necessarily constant, there is breaks in the weather it can certainly rain for days or weeks without end. But if you go into the township which is only 5mins down the road, it's often sunny, but we're over shadowed by the Ridge so don't get to see it. To get the electricity put on up to the house it's to expensive so that's why we have solar and because we're a bit higher up the rain lands here first before it moves on. We're south and a little bit west of Hobart so a bit closer to Antarctica even with its mini environment I love living here. So I can be a hermet if I want 😁 the population in and around the township is just over a 1000, not much goes on, but it is an arty area and a foodie area quite diverse, summer to early autumn is the tourist season so there's a lot of rvs and caravans stay in the local park where there's a designated area for them, oh dear as usual I've blethered on. @@howlingwind1937 What an amazing place to live! I'm sure it would be nice to have more sun, but it sounds like such a unique, lovely, and rustic place to be. I lived in Glenwood Springs for a few years which sits in a valley and during winter we saw the sun from about 10am -3 pm. The snow didn't fully melt until late spring.

@@chrisloudart after all that waffling I didn't tell you how ling winter is here! For almost 7 months it's cold and wet because we're closer to the southern pole, spring is a bit iffy, but from September we start getting more sunshine on the solar panels, and there are more warm days than really cold days. However, it can still snow in summer! We can get 4 seasons in one day sometimes! Cheers!

@@howlingwind1937 That sounds similar to where I am. Summer here is June, July and August. We're at 7,000 ft above sea level and we've had snow in June and August. I'm at the base of Pikes Peak which is above 14,000ft. It still has snow on the peak now. 🏔️

1e liked more especialy by putting the blue, the forms and blackwhite collage super great. Lateron the green spoiled it for me. Went interesting by painting over and rub it away so the ocre appeared and texture. Lateron background to dark and the contrast faded which was a pity. Courage to choose the light yellow and scratch in which was also interesting but overall liked the 1 approach. Thanks for showing your process which i learned a lot from 😊

Hey Crystal! I typically just use warm water and hand soap which usually does the trick with both Liquitex and Nova Color gel medium.😊

i use up so mych paint changing, fixing, trying to find the right design. then i stop .. days later i go again to overcome the what do i do stage and end up going in another direction .. = more paint... then i get discouraged feeling like im wasting paint or time on that piece.

I get it, I've been there before many times. I usually give a painting a second chance after stopping. If it doesn't gain momentum after I pick it up again, I'll put it away and move onto something else.
