I have the same thing. Just got it a day ago and 4 Out of 5 are in there second instar and 1 is still in it 1st instar.☺

If you love painted lady butterflies and a few other species, just leave a corner with stinging nettles in your garden, hopefully they will come naturally. Instead of feeling them the stuff in the jar, you can also give them fresh stinging nettles in a small vase with water every few days......cheap and easy to do, and butterflies will come to your garden naturally, if you also provide their nectarplants

The caterpillars or wiggling that's their natural defense from other birds or other little creatures that are trying to eat the Chrysalis it scares them off by wiggling so it's a natural defense

Nice video!! Do you know the lifespan of these painted lady butterflies? Some sources say two weeks, but others say up to 1 year! Maybe it's only 2 weeks if they are not in the wild?

they close there wings because it’s a camouflage technique cause they live on trees and need to hide from birds

I'm very, very late to this but the butterfly was deformed because the chrysalis fell. They don't make them at the bottom like that, what you should've done was try to hang it up and let it hatch in the net like the others

No offence but you should of put that one from the cup into the net or by the lid and also you can go to insect lore website and buy a cup of butterfly's so keep the net and buy a cup of 10 caterpillars for a very good price

The one has permanently deformed wings (and will never be able to fly) because it was left in the cup and could not properly inflate its wings. They must be able to climb up on something and have space immediately after emerging. If you had removed the chrysalis from the cup and put in the bottom of the butterfly cage next to the mesh wall so it would have something to climb, it would have been okay.

I’m currently doing this with my kids and when I first saw your comment, I thought it was rude. Since I’ve watched through the video, I actually agree with you! She absolutely needs to do more thorough research before attempting another insect project involving live insects which is pretty sad because the kit as well as the website for the caterpillars is pretty informative if you take the time to read it all! We made sure to do some of our own independent reading prior to ordering the butterfly garden, let’s just say my 7 year old son pointed out many errors within this video. I mean no offense and only mean this hoping (5 years later) that you put more into these experiments before you do them, and I’m grateful that you did not perform this experiment with a classroom at that time. My only other thought here is that maybe she’s awkward with being on video, and had difficulties due to lack of confidence here? But again, a good amount of reading and even watching videos would’ve given many tools to boost that conference in doing this project.
