I'm 61 and just starting out, I want to be able to paint portraits of my family. You make this appear so simple and straightforward; are there any tips you can give an absolute novice? My main problem with faces is proportion and angle to the light. Don't seem able to get both correct, one of them maybe. but not both.

The easiesg way to start portraits is to drop an image into an online image editor and use colorize mode to reduce the image to color shapes. I purchased an opaque projector to put images on canvas

You can use a method called squaring up which helps to position things and proportions

Personally I go on instagram and add the reference photo in the story edit (without posting) and use the drop tool (in the bottom left) to copy a couple colors and create my color palette. Sometimes what makes it difficult is the gradient and blend between colors.

For making a caucasian skin tone: Red+yellow Add a tiny bit of blue to neutralize it Add white until you get the desired tone Idk how to make darker skin tones, but I hope this helped some of yall lol

Kirb .o Colors that are complimentary should create the color brown. Yellow and purple, blue and orange, and green and red. You want to use richer colors like blue since it’s a cooler color, you can use it to make the color brown look darker. But make sure it’s the desired color you want.

Dark skin you can use blue, orange, white, black, and some red

Darker skin tones = orange and blue. The darker you make it, the more blue u should add.

lol if you are using oils then water has no effect if you want your brushes clearly clean and a perfect painting,try using turpentine oil instead

aldino prakasa just try to watch videos and practice drawing it a lot and you’ll get way better by time i always doodle parts of the face that i’m not so good at when i’m bored so i got better without even realizing and as i got to be good at every part of the face now i can draw a face with good proportions

Best advice ever, especially the last one. I never feel that I’m done. There’s always ONE more thing to do. Your suggestion that if “another brush stroke doesn’t enhance, but just makes a change, then it’s probably time to stop” (paraphrased) will be my new mantra.

You were spot on. Your tip made a huge difference. Until I tried your method I was saving eyes, nose and mouth till the end which caused me to paint them in a very loose impressionistic manner. This lead to I could only paint males up until I tried your idea. I drew a quick sketch of a gal on a small canvas pad and within one hour I completed a wonderfully done female image that had all the soft features I had not been able to pull off prior to the change. Thank you so much. When I paint a portrait in graphite, I like to do the eyes, nose and mouth first so I can see the likeness in those areas in great detail and the person in the portrait begins to pop out in 3-D. Now that I want to paint portraits in oils, I see that most tutorials don't do that, and the chaos in the early stages makes me uncomfortable. Sooooo a thousand thank you's for showing me I can paint an area and almost finish it as I go along, to tweak it later. What a relief!

The face is the mirror of the mind, the eyes of people reflect the desires of their heart... I guess life is a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see... eyes are very similar to paintings in that regard, if you can say it in words there's no need to paint it... eyes often times say more then words can... PS: Alpay... your voice is just the perfect radio voice. Hearing your voice itself is already pretty cool.

Watching you paint all the skin tones was soooo satisfying. I’m trying to figure out how to do that myself. You made it look so easy. Unfortunately the medium I work with doesn’t blend well. If you blend it too much with too many colors it will look muddy, I have to find a way to see where my painting is going in layers instead of being able to blend everything at once. I work in nails with gel polish that needs to be cured. I’ve painted faces but I want to learn how to paint more realistically.

Painting complex areas first makes perfect sense seeing as you're energy and focus are sharp in the beginning and can take a small break being loose while filling out bigger areas

What you said are exactly opposite to what my teacher told me. She always asks us to paint the background first, block colours， then move to details. But to be frank, i like your way better. Blocking colour without outlines is extremely difficult as i always forget the actual layout and eventually end up with a distorted painting. Anyways, thanks for sharing a new way of painting。

Same! I can't find my way through color blocking. But outlines and this method in the video gets me through. I also found other skilled painters do paint this way and the results are as great as those who color block.
