This is my favorite painting. Here you used almost all my fave colors. The spontaneity in this video made with grace(maybe a dash of snark!) produced an image I can lose myself in. I think of these places as imagery to meditate with. I painted Trunk bay from memory, and now hanging on my wall it is hard to distinguish from the pic I have. I was born on St. Thomas and lived there until I was 14. I used to grab the Boston Whaler motor out of Cow Pence Bay over to St. John and sit up top of the hill and chill. I would sometimes (most of the time) fall asleep and wake from a dream to the exact image in front of me.

Thank you so much for sharing your 'mind'... I am just starting watercolour and you made me laugh when you said 'detail drunk'.... Fascinating, isn't it, how the artist can "speak" into existence, with his imagination and his hands, a scene that was never there until he called it forth with his eye and his brush? Another way in which we image our Creator, I suppose... This is a lovely one! Watching the "ex nihilo" aspect of your spontaneous paintings gives them an excitement different from and somehow more than painting a scene from nature or from a photograph.

Well mister... I've been looking for a way in to watercolor. I've literally watched at least a hundred different videos on techniques, etc. I used to be into very detailed drawings, but I longed to be more painterly and still do fantasy and surreal artwork. This video gave me an epiphany and a way in to color and looseness and a way to keep the fantastic alive as well. Thank you so much. ps: When I did a little airbrush I would just dab the masking fluid with a paper towel to remove any colors and lift it off with masking tape.

Excellent video, Steve. The nice thing about this kind of technique is that everyone has a different approach depending how they see things after the free-painting step. I don't why I wanted to to add a waterline and tint the lower half of the rocks to submerge them under a creek or something. I think is the use of white as a color (in this case sky or water surface) that allows you to suggest so much with so little.
