In this watercolor tutorial I’m painting a simple winter landscape in watercolors. This can also be a good idea for painting Christmas cards. I’ll show you how to use a limited color palette to paint a cozy snowy winter landscape at night and adding some extra magic using shimmering golden watercolors.
Supplies:
Watercolor book (sketchbook) from Hahnemühle, 250 gsm, 100 % cotton
Prussian blue from Daniel Smith
Warm yellow and orange from Winsor & Newton
Masking fluid from Winsor & Newton
Washy tapes
Round synthetic watercolor brushes
Gold watercolor from Colors by Vita

My 11-year-old granddaughter did a variation on your painting using the tip of a round toothpick dipped into masking fluid to create the stars. Very successful. Thanks for the inspiration.

I always admire the artist who has an understanding almost like a partnership with the medium, such serene control. I could never get watercolors to respect me.😄 This is a lovely image, peaceful and yet warm and outreaching in tone. A wonderful Christmas image.

This is indeed an interesting way to look at it, but one must remember that the quality of the material really has some impact on what you can achieve, especially when using watercolours. I think with cheap colours like they are used by school-children you could not produce such a painting like this. So perhaps if the outcome of your efforts looks disappointing, perhaps the quality of the colours and/or paper is, in part, to blame.

No, Annike, I am referring only to technique, and not to the quality of materials. I'm not sure why you would make an assumption like that; and I know, because of other media in which I have some fair competence, that quality materials go their distance toward good results, but are no magical guarantee. So I will let my comment and my appreciation of this painter stand as they are.

Thank you 😊 glad you think so, I recommend using a craft brush with slightly rougher bristles for masking fluid and wash it with a tiny bit of dish soap before using the masking fluid so that the masking fluid doesn’t stick to the bristles too much. Makes cleaning it much easier.
