If you can find KBS Diamond coat, it is a very durable clear coat and might reduce chipping, also a self etching primer could help to. Love your work!

Well sometimes it isn’t appropriate to fool around and not be serious. This example is obviously not one of those moments though. Seriously, who the hell cares what the weights YOU are using look like, let alone what the weights someone else is using look like? If the guy wants to paint them let him do what he wants. Is it going to chip and need to be repainted eventually? Yeah but that’s his problem not anyone else’s

I'm a big function over form guy but point of that phrase is that where function and form contradict I will choose function. That doesn't mean I'm going to be mad when something that is functional. Also looks good. The spray paint in no way inhibits the function.

100% agree. You need a solid base but past that it's nice to have nice looking things. Imo the fact that it's diy'd improves it. More emotional investment/pride in using something you've had a hand in the creation of. Plus it's probably cheaper than a lot of people's comparable setups anyway

A lot of people don't understand that how our items age and wear is a BIG part of design. For example, materials like leather are used for sentimental/personal items, because they adapt and age as they are used. Almost as if the item is telling a small part of your story. So don't be afraid to chip and scuff them. It just means you love them 😊

Those are freakin awesome. You could also clear coat them with multiple layers making them far more chip resistant. I also think the chips give them a lot of character.

It's a good idea, I'd clear coat over the colour then spray paint black, I really like the look of the colours coming through with the chips.

You can always repaint them. That's what they don't seem to remember. And these look sick as hell. I think my favorite part is that you have the numbers on there as silver numbering. That makes them even more visible than on regular factory painted weights.

I love how colorful they are! Looks like fun! Maybe if you coated them in an outdoor sealant or epoxy resin it could resist the chipping a bit longer? I don't think the chipping is that big of a deal though, it still looks good.

Have you tried using canned truck bed liner for the black? That bit of rubberized texture would probably be more durable and even cut down on noise when they clack together…? Maybe? Worth a try at least.

It's good you're enjoying yourself and I love personalizing my own stuff too, but I'm always afraid of potential health hazards with certain crafts, like this one with rather intensively used items. It's also why I stopped wearing nail polish for example, once it starts to chip, it gets everywhere, in your food, eyes, hair, skin creases, you name it. Now, customizing the frames for your actual weight lifting machinery, that seems way more safe than weights, and already gets done at professional quality level (powder coating or automobile paint quality spraying, for example).

Function over fashion, sure, but these do fulfill a function. They're pretty and bring joy to the people who use them. They're also a creative outlet. They probably also improve consistency in the gym, as having hobbies related to working out (like paining plates) probably increases motivation.
