We are not quite sure how we will use the upstairs of our shop, so I decided to paint the floor until I see how things pan out. The floor took primer, which we already had from the shop, three gallons of paint, three rolls of paint tape, hardwater putty and sand paper-under $150 (20 x 35) It takes some work, but the outcome is amazing. Most people don't believe that I painted the floor.
Make sure that you use a high quality floor paint. This can be done on concrete, particle board or OSB.

Years ago I watched a crew of people on a TV set create patterns on a concrete floor to imitate a variegated carpet. They used a paint roller on the end of a pole. But they randomly tied string tightly around the roller to make it irregularly bulge in some areas. When they rolled the paint onto the floor with it, it created a pattern of course, which they let dry. They then used another shade of the same color and rolled it over the same floor, but in the opposite direction, and let that dry. A third coat of another shade of the same color was applied on a diagonal. When it was done, it was amazing. I'm surprised a roller on a pole wasn't used here because you could stand and apply the paint much faster instead of being on your knees, using your hands.

This looks amazing! I think you need some more electrical outlets. Haha.

I've Durham rock putty for years and it is fine for filling before putting a floor covering down. Unfortunately it will crack and leave the floors looking a mess if your just painting over it. I use fiberglass, waterproof auto body filler. Duraglass is a good choice. Less chance of cracking and chipping and works on interior and exterior surfaces.

Great video! You did a great job explaining every thing. How are your floors holding up? Has your putty cracked? In hindsight what would you have done different?

This floor is not a high traffic area. The putty has not cracked. Foot traffic doesn't seem to wear it. Our son made an office in the small room now he's working from home and you can see some wear under his chair where he scoots it back and forth every day. This floor is just osb sub floor. I did the same technique in our high traffic entry way when we had six kids. It included stairs. The floor looked great for about two years, then you could see some wear. I'd occasionally patch a spot by using the same rag technique, and it lasted for almost 10 years until I replaced it with hardwood. People couldn't believe that I painted it. Good luck with your project!

Did you use a primer if so what kind, acrylic, enamel, or oil? Also did you use porch and floor paint was it acrylic, enamel, or oil? I'm ready to paint my floors but i don't know what kind of paint to use. Any help you could give me will be very much appreciated! Thank you!

After several years, I am curious as to how the paint has held up to all the foot traffic?

This is in the top of our shop, not a really high traffic area. It has held up great though. We did this same thing in the entry of our home years ago and it held up for years until we finally put in hardwood.

we have a mop that used minimal water. I would not use a steam mop or a super wet mop on it. .

Great idea for a video. Just a couple of tips for you way too much time spent filming each step. I don’t want to watch you vacuum for an hour or so it seemed. Perhaps, work in the small room, and film step-by-step. Don’t spend more than a couple minutes on each step.

Working with three different rags seem to do better. I do not roll each of them I kinda put it down on the floor and twist it. Twist and drg. A forth rag can blend it a bit.
