Painting And Lining Ideas - In The Workshop. In this episode I mention some of the problems encountered when painting miniatures. I also look at the practicality of using commercial "stick on" vinyl pinstripe Trim Lines as fine "model sized" masking tape........................... / keithappleton

One tip I’ve discovered when using masking tape, particularly round corners and uneven surfaces, is to paint clear lacquer after applying the tape but before you do the actual paint, so if any bleeds under the tape, it will seal up the gap but will be clear so won’t show up in the finished job, especially if the whole thing is protected with a coat of clear

Hi Keith, I'm very new to your channel and have been enjoying some of your previous videos. So, thank you. A tip with yellow paint - it is always difficult to get it to cover without the base coats grinning through, so lay down 1or 2 coats of white first to cover the base. You'll find the yellow will (appear to ) cover better and often times, will look brighter. Stay safe and well :)

I have always used a product called "Grafix Frisket Film", It comes in both a film sheet and a paint on liquid. You apply it on the surface then cut and peel out the areas you want to paint.

The key to lining with a brush is a proper lining brush and of course practice. With a proper brush you can shake like a leaf and still paint straight lines.

That looks like a good result Keith. I use 3M's fine lining tape to mask off and this works well, but I've not yet used it for lining. I'm long way off painting my project.

I find the tamiya masking tape is the best for a really crisp edge. I use 1 shot paint without fail on every engine

Make sure you always color match paints in natural light. Colours look very different once you go out in the sun. I've had 6 different shades look the exact same inside but very different outside.

What I was taught using masking tape is you never lift it off the base paint as you did as this action tries to lift the paint already on the surface, and if it is not well stuck, it will lift off. What the best way to do it is you peel it back along itself so the edge rolls off the existing paint and doesn’t lift. So you peel the left hand end up to get a grip, then pull it flat along to the right hand end

@@keithappleton I bought some myself and put it up someplace and now can't find it also can't remember what model I was going to use it on. Also bought some figures for a model, then when I got home remembered I had given away that model. Would give the figures to whoever I gave the model to, but can't remember who has it. Isn't getting old great!

Why do you have to paint lines on your "canope"? An appetizer. And if you really want a hard painting job, pull all the bristles from your brush save one. Have a 1 hair paintbrush. Keep up the good work I enjoy your work.
