I absolutely love the magic of Derwent InkTense, but have never bought the blocks. I only have the smallest set of pencils. I've never tried them on a quilt, great idea! I also like the aloe vera gel, I find the water makes the colour bleed, but the gel gives better control. I love your quilt!

These pencils are fabulous on fabric. I use them all the time and the colors are vibrant or soft depending on how intense you want your color. They work great with aloe Vera gel or glycerin as well. That allows more control as to where the color goes without bleeding colors. I love everything about them.

Hi there. I love your quilt, it’s going to be really pretty. The thing that looks like sumac could have sort of deep red/rusty brown on the little leafy things to resemble the seed things they grow. It also looks like a tropical heliconia to me. That would need some yellow brushed on the red tips, and I think goldy-brown on the leafy bits to make them look like the seeds. I hope you post pictures of the finished quilt. Thanks for your video.

I use them just like the sticks only my fingers don’t get dirty. Haha. I sometimes use a wet paintbrush to pick up the ink like I do with the blocks, or I color with them to add shading or lines onto the already wet fabric from the blocks or activate with whatever medium I am using over the drawn lines.

Once it is set with the iron it is washable, I don’t know how it does long term. I’ve used the pencils with water and it can change a fabric color or just where one paints it. I apply pencil then water. The aloe Vera helps keep it in place so it doesn’t bleed elsewhere, which is why I watched this video. There are several out there on various techniques. I stitch afterwards. Use a light box to transfer shape/motif to fabric.

Inktense is not permanent on fabric, especially silk, and will wash out and fade to a degree. I have a red flower practice piece on a scrap of fabric which was coloured with inktense and fabric medium, and there was some colouring of the cold water that I rinsed it in. The piece was heat set with an iron, and was at least 2 months old before the test wash.

Do you think these could be used to hand color lace appliques on a wedding dress? I am having the hardest time finding a way to dye the lace on my wedding dress without ruining it, and no one in my area will take on such a project.
@brendamathewshikes8381
@brendamathewshikes8381 9 ай бұрын
You could try it in an inconspicuous place (seam allowance) and see. I have not tried it on any fabrics other than cotton. I would say to put some plastic veteran the lace and the dress and try it. I heat set it to make permanent and you might not be able to do that so sod t get caught in the rain. You could also try fabric markers. That would be easier for a do it yourself project.

I think you quilt is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!! I just bought a set of Inktense pencils so I've got a 3 questions if you can help me please? #1 if you put a color down on fabric and then decide it's too light, can you add more color? I was thinking that if the gel is still wet, you could use the pencil directly into corners or where you want shading. And if it's dry, can you just do the whole process over again to deepen the color, or even alter it? Like maybe adding an orange to a red to create a sort of highlight? #2 Once you've heat set the fabric, can it go through a washer/dryer without the ink washing away? #3 Have you tried coating the leaf in just the gel and then use your pencil to color it in on top of the gel, then using your brush to even out strokes? Thank you so much for sharing your technique with us, I can't wait to try it out!
@brendamathewshikes8381
@brendamathewshikes8381 Жыл бұрын
It is supposed to be washable but I have not tried it. I may put it in a quilt show and do not want it to shrink before then. I would like to wash out the aloe vera gel. Will have to wait. You can put the gel down first and rub the pencil or stick into it. I feel like there would be less control that way. You can add another color to the wet to mix and layer it when dry with more aloe and color. Colors are translucent to if you put pink over blue it will look purple. I do like adding sharpie accents after painting too. I did not do that to this one.

Is the purpose of the aloe vera just to give the paint more viscosity, or does it serve another, more fixative purpose?
@brendamathewshikes8381
@brendamathewshikes8381 Жыл бұрын
It wets the ink like water but it thicker to prevent/reduce the bleed in the fabric. You could use fabric medium instead but I found I liked the aloe better and the price is much less. Make sure it is clear, uncolored aloe Vera gel. You can get it at Walmart.
