James Gurney paints the flowers of a forsythia shrub using a limited palette of watercolor and gouache. He starts by capturing the overall gesture and silhouette of the whole plant and then subdivides the mass into smaller flower shapes.

I dont know why I have yet to subscribe. I saw an interview, and I was just so impressed with the work. I think I gravitate to the fact that your style varies a bit, and the subjects are so far apart. Fantasy, landscapes, vehicles, streetscapes, and this is me. I like painting everything too, and I choose to vary my style to some extent depending upon the subject, or my mood.

As an amateur I follow your process, understanding well what is happening as if I myself could keep up with it. Then there is that tipping point where I suddenly get lost while the painting is transformed without me seeing what exactly was done or which strokes made the magic happened.

Such a superb work, yet very simple. I wonder how this technique would work when you're painting a complex object like this but it's made of many different singular things, not like similar flowers. I painted once a slum here from Brazil where there was a large group of people seen from the top, somewhat afar, I sort of painted small dots for each individual to give the idea of the large group. I was trying to make an impressionist painting there. But the thing with impressionism is that the movement seems to be the most important. So it doesn't work just placing the dots, you need to sort of give them movement to have the impressionist look.

Hi James, beautiful painting and great video! I liked what you said about the infeasibility of reproducing nature's detail, but instead needing to represent or suggest it. When you start going into adding finer details, do you already have a good idea from experience of how much detail to add, or is that something you tweak for each painting? I sometimes find myself struggling with going to detail too soon, or trying to add too much. By the way, I've been reading Color and Light and have found it to be incredibly helpful. For anyone considering it, just buy it. It is one of the most practical and accessible books out there, and the price-to-value ratio can't be beat.
@JamesGurney
@JamesGurney 3 жыл бұрын
I try to gauge how long a session I can realistically and adjust the detail module accordingly. But the goal with this kind of painting is to get to a finished effect right away.
