What beautiful work! I'm probably one of the least artistic people on the planet, but I wanted to make a little memorial painting of my stepdaughter's two dogs that she lost to illness in less than a couple of months. I couldn't figure out how to add texture to a dog with totally dark black fur, but I think making a brush as you've shown will definitely help.

Thanks for showing how to make that brush, that's helpful. But why would you trim it straight across? Why not at an angle to make hairs that aren't all the same length?
@TheDevonArtist
@TheDevonArtist Жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa, yes I've tried cutting the bristles many different ways to see how the effect would look, and the way you just mentioned is one of them. I also find that shaving the hairs down the length with a craft knife can give you a sort of feather cut, giving you different length hairs. Paul 🎨

Thank you! Really good! I would like (someday) to paint my brother’s dog for them but it is one of the small fluffy dogs and I think that it will probably be difficult! I started once but all I have is a paper with two eyes staring out of the otherwise blank page!🙃 someday I will get the courage to go further! Thank you for sharing your teaching!💕

You can do it Donna! As long as you do plenty of planning for your colour and composition before you start, you should be fine. Having a good plan beforehand is the way I work, it saves far too many mistakes during the painting process. Paul ;-)

Hi Maria, thank you very much for watching my video of this lovely girl called 'Jessie'. I'm really glad it helps you, especially when painting fur. This video on here is a collection of clips from my main video, when my paid members on my website get to follow the full nearly 5 hours of this tutorial from start to finish. This is also where they can download the outline drawing and the reference photo alongside the colour chart as well. There are over 100 video tutorials there as well. At least my video here on KZfaq has given you some good ideas to go along with, and to me, that's fantastic. Thank you so much for following me on here. Paul 🎨 devonartist.co.uk/memberships/

I'm mostly self-taught in painting. I usually work with ink, dip pens and markers, so I'm used to see immediate results. With watercolour, I never realised I don't give it enough time to rest, to dry as much as necessary. Also, I'm unfamiliar with painting in layers. This is why your video is so enlightening. I loved your replicator brushes. I would never thought of that. I use old rough brushes with ink to add texture and effect, but never thought of a personal "replicator" brush like yours. I already made two. I will definitely look into your videos. Thank you so much!

Very inspiring to see your work. I am working on a giraffe right now so wondering if you have done it. Stuck at the texture of the skin. Would love to learn.

Hi Alwyn,x not this is something I do wish to paint at some point, but I can imagine how the skin mustd be to paint. Without seeing a photo and spending time working the colours and texture ideas out, I would possible test using the dry brush technique and a light softening afterwards. Paul 🎨

Oh my goodness, this is wonderful! I did just find you, and I am into wildlife and photography. I am an oil painter, wanting to improve my watercolor so badly!! I have a little black and white Shitzu I am wanting to paint and I think I can use the principles in this painting. He is jet black and white. Would I still use the variation in colors? Thank you for your sharing your knowledge!
@TheDevonArtist
@TheDevonArtist Жыл бұрын
Hi Lynda, thank you very much. Yes, I would personally use similar foundation colours before layering the details over the top, just so you have a good varied background that will show through. Consider the placement of the colours 'behind the scene' and you will be fine. Paul 🎨

Yes I do! 😀 I like to have a little bit of life to look at, at the very beginning, rather than a couple of voids where the eyes should be. 😊

I am about to embark on a watercolor of a lab. I’m doing some research on techniques. Thanks for the video. I subscribed and will be checking out your channel. I do have a question though. You say you’re using a pencil to do the outlines at the beginning of this video. However it looks like you’re using very small brush? What kind of pencil or brush are using?
@TheDevonArtist
@TheDevonArtist 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for subbing to my channel Sarah. Regarding your question, what I do is cover all the internal pencil marks I've made up with a watery colour. This helps to semi-seal the pencil into the paper, so when I add washes of colours over the top, the pencil marks will mostly still be there to guide me along for the rest of the painting. Hope this helps, Paul 🎨

Hi if I am using a flat brush. Does it mean that I can skip the process of flattening the brush and immediately just trim it?
@TheDevonArtist
@TheDevonArtist 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Eugene, I suppose it depends on how thick the brush is as well. If it's a thin flat brush then yes, you could just trim it, but I would still pull out the metal ferrule on both sides to give it a more of a small fan shape as well. I do hope this is a throwaway brush you are using though, it doesn't always work first time around. I also buy some of those very cheap brushes from discount shops to play with the idea. Paul 🎨

@@TheDevonArtist ya because I just started doing watercoloring I don’t really have any throwaway brush… but I am buying from someone their old brushes at very cheap price just to try this. Have always had issue with drawing fir… really liked what you are doing :)
