Ah the dreaded Nissan 350Z interior panels where all the paint scratches off. I don't know why Nissan decided to poorly paint these little trim bits in these interiors, but they did. And it's up to us to restore them so it doesn't look so embarrassing at the next car meet.
In this video I go over an easy and durable way I like to paint interior panels. The key is to use "high build" filler primer and truck bed liner or texture paint if you chose. I like the truck bed line because it's decided to be chemical resistant and be put through very harsh environments. So if you use it in the interior it's going to last a long time.

Looking at all the hate comments here. Are you folks blind in one eye or something? He did a decent job and it restored the interior nicely. Scratches are gone, replaced with a grain type texture. Maybe that's why people are bitching, but more prone to believe it's people looking for something to be unhappy about.

Ya I'm not sure either. Maybe they thought it was suppose to be smooth after? I just wanted to show an alternative to traditional paint, because most factory painted panels turn out like this over time. People seem to be half and half on this one.

I've got some glossy gray bezels just like yours that have paint coming off with the white showing underneath. I was wondering what grit you started with when sanding?, Im considering using rustoleum 2X paint/primer and finishing with their crystal clear enamel. Thanks!
@AnthonyJ350
@AnthonyJ350 3 жыл бұрын
You can start with 200 grit and work your way up to make it smooth again.

You should do several thin coats of a lighter silver metallic paint (after a primer of a preferable light color ; white or grey) followed by a matte clear coat. Lightly sand with 1000+ grit sand paper ( to your desired finish ) giving the panel a brushed aluminum finish.......in my opinion it would contrast better with the interior.

Steven Pruitt A lot of people don't like an idea if it's not conventional. And yes I wanted to show people something a little different and it's much easier to paint with this stuff.
@derbigpr500
@derbigpr500 6 жыл бұрын
No, it's simply a bad result because not only did he use the wrong type of paint, he used the wrong technique for both the paint and the clear. Just because you don't understand how something should be done and therefore don't realize what's with all the "hate", doesn't mean that people aren't giving proper criticism and not actually hating.
@crocodile2006
@crocodile2006 5 жыл бұрын
@Jay Dee I don't think the hate is warranted... BUT... I reckon the biggest mistake he made ignoring the paint choices was he didn't take all the black rubberdised paint off. The black rubber paint has really terrible adhesion because the grey plastic underneith is shiny. He should have scraped the paint off, light sanded the grey plastic then painted with interior paint. That's what I did and it came out perfect.

If there aren't deep scratches because it's textured you can just spray over it again with very light coats.
@dalandser562
@dalandser562 7 жыл бұрын
Just use a scotch brite pad or 400+ grit sandpaper to knock down the texture of the truck bed liner spray and then paint again in color of your choice. Use satin or matte clear coat if you don't want it shiny.

Bed Liner lays down a little thicker perfect for older cars/trucks this help keep the panel from wiggling and feeling loose plus the extra grip graps on to surrounding panels just giving off a better build feel. I love using bed line works great for mirrors and bumpers as well I like to leave to surface more abrasive then when using a normal paint. Bed line likes to peel.

+Jonathan Keith The way I look at it is, this way is like being with a girl that's an 8 till she's 65. or the other way is a girl that's a 10 but when she's 35 she turns into a 6 with age. Get what I'm saying?

Mine look the same as yours in the video. Same buttons in the same location. I cant imagine that part being different between years. It would be a waste of money for Nissan. Maybe just buy a driver side one and try to install it. See if it works.

MrRangerZr1 Well the funny thing is, everyone that doesn't like it, doesn't look at the door and the interior as a whole. I'm not trying to be cocky, but everyone that gives this look flak probably doesn't have a car as nice as this. I put this car together in my spare time in 8 months. Some times you just need to try different things. You saw how bad those panels were, that would have needed a ton of sanding with high build primer, just to get started.

ok first of all you cant be all nice and professional in the youtube comment section that part of the internet is for people to insult each other now to your video its just a typical teckie thing the guy who thought you how to do what you do ...did he had one of those things i guess no ...you don´t need it ...its not better or faster than a screw driver ( wich was good enough for generations ) i just conclouded that you where kind of trying this on a fly and for the first time oh and i ment by fucking up that you added a nother colour skeem to the allready full of greys and blacks interieur ....and why texture paint gonna be a pain in the ass to work with when you whant to change the damn thing

lordn22 So to sum it up you're mad because I talked back to you with the same language, I'm just educating people about other tools available to do a job which btw I probably take apart more interior parts in a day then you ever would in a year, so I understand the limitations of only using a screw driver. And I notice a few people don't like the end result in the video, but in person people like the simplicity, ease and look of the panel (I guess it looks different on camera). So don't get mad because I just show people tools they've never seen. That's the whole point, expose them to a different way they might find useful.
@lordn22

first of all im not mad i was positively surprised that you just asked me how you fucked up ...instead of calling me names for compromising your car and work . i just said that you cant be like that on youtube because especialy car guys just insult each other here ..... then thats the first video of yours that i watched and i did not know your professions and knowleges and when i saw that tool i theught you where exchanging experiance with expencive unnececary tools and the first thought that came to my mind was that you where about to f*** up . especially since interior is a pritty hafty job since you always look at it + you are going to tuch these pannels all the time ...thats why i wrote it now i have the oppinion that you where just trying to keep it simple but with a little more time invested i still think you could have gotten a nicer result in fact i watched a nother video on this topic bevore i watched yours and what that guy was doing was not all that harder ... he just invested more time ....and as you probably know the worst thing you can do when it comes to spray painting is beeing inpacent (by the way i´m german and my vocabulary is limited as well as my spelling sucks i know that, i hope you can get what i mean )
