Great Video, This explanation of house painting is exact. The steps you have taken are exactly what I did 20 years ago and still is holding up. I was younger then and now turning 73 I will be refreshing some sections this summer. Lots of work, but worth it.. Thanks for the refresher course. Old lady in MA

Wow awesome job Katie. I have done a repair and paint on an 110 year old house and I can really appreciated the time and hard work it takes to do a job to a high standard. And don't those old homes look so smart when freshly painted. Also I discovered that keeping up the cleaning maintenance was a great help keeping the house looking cared for. I don't think I would ever recommended using power washers on the old homes unless super low pressure. Great job.
@olsenkated

Thanks Andy! I couldn’t agree more. It a never ending job properly caring for and maintaining a home, but keeping up on the cleaning makes a world of difference. I will be washing the house here in a few weeks as the Wisconsin weather starts to warm up.

@@olsenkated We need to do that to our victorian one of these days too. We found a great tool called a Speadheater Cobra. It heats with infrared energy which breaks the pain bond away from the wood so it scrapes off easily. It might be good for future projects! We have some videos on our channel that show this.

Super helpful to watch your process and attention to detail. Thanks for sharing! My house is a 135 year old Queen Anne Victorian and has recently had the old vinyl siding removed. My biggest challenge in thinking about painting it myself is reaching the highest gables. Glad to see you used a man lift! You’ve given me a good dose of motivation.
@olsenkated
@olsenkated Жыл бұрын
I bet your house is gorgeous! And maybe a diamond in the rough if it has just been uncovered. I used to be afraid of heights, now I just respect them. The man lift was so much easier on the body. And my feet are thankful! Standing on a ladder all day is definitely hard on the feet - they aren’t destined to stand on such a small surface. Best of luck on your project - I would love to see photos! They simply don’t build houses like they used to.

Katie, You inspired me 😀, as I have been thinking of painting the exterior of our home. I am a 60 yr old women who is a DIY kind of gal. I saw our neighbor paint the exterior of his home on his own. He did the prep work, and paint work by sections. He is a single man who works full time, so he did if on weekends. It was a long process but the results were so amazing. Again your an inspiration Katie....great job👍 One day at a time!

Wow 101 years old sounds really old, then I remembered my house is about 75 years old itself! You guys really did a great job and I am glad your boyfriend came to help because this is one of the most difficult jobs you can do. I just started my house today and I am doing it alone. The last time the house was painted was 18 years ago after my fathers death. My Mom and I worked and painted every single day and it took about 3 months. Two coats of primer and two coats of paint, so in reality we painted this house 4 times, UGH!!! We did a good job for it to last this long however!! Congratulations and best wishes to you and your new home!

Katie, what a fantastic job you did on this! I grew up in Oshkosh so as soon as I saw the Kwik Trip I knew this had to be Wisco :) I am doing the same thing starting this fall and continuing through next year. We have a 1950's built home that was originally sided with cedar siding 12" reveal. That was covered in the 1960s with aluminum siding... and I've been pulling that off and finding the siding still in very good to decent shape. I plan on doing exactly what you have done. Sadly there are no Menards in Upstate NY, where I live now. I'll be using Sherwin WIlliams paint and an oil-based primer too. Go Packers and Go Brewers!

Hi Steve, Hello from your home state of Wisconsin! That’s awesome, I hope your project goes well. I was somewhat lucky that some of the old paint cleaned off easily due to so much sun exposure and how neglected it was. Wonder how yours will be since it has been protected for so long. Best of luck to you! I bet it’s going to turn out amazingly!

It turned out amazing! I really admire your dedication and pouring your soul into your home! That is what makes it a home and not just a house.❤ Just I have always been wondering way in us most of the houses are painted, when it's such a pain in the a$$ every couple of years? We in Europe, if we have wood out or inside most of the times it is just impregnated.

Thank you! This house is definitely starting to feel more like home. A lot of people don’t maintain their wood siding in the US and it goes neglected. That would be so cool to see the difference between the US and Europe styles of siding!

Looks really good, especially to do all that scraping & sanding! the paint scraper you were talking about is carbide blade, not carbon fiber haha not a car panel. Im surprised no use of a sprayer when it came to painting?! just goes on so much faster. I reccomended back brush or back rolling, as you're spraying, to make sure it gets worked in good. but yes to speed up painting, esp all the eaves etc goes quicker. do a good job masking too, if spraying

Ha! Thanks for letting me know that I said it wrong - no one has said anything in over a year since I’ve posted this video. But I miss speak all the time 🤷🏼‍♀️ I thought about using a sprayer but didn’t want to have the extra prep and the expense of the equipment. Probably would have been worth it in the long run to save time. But I’ve also never used one and didn’t want to mess it up. I’m definitely not an experienced painter. Just a DIY gal with time on my hands, an old house, and a low budget. I got lucky and most of the eaves have been updated to metal soffits. It sounds like you have experience with painting big projects like this, so I’m glad to hear you think it looks good!

@@olsenkated yes.. I do painting for my business, along with roof cleaning, pressure washing, gutter cleaning, window cleaning, Christmas lights. You did amazing with the prep! hard to find anymore these days, people willing to scrape etc! You would of learned just fine & quickly with a sprayer. Then end up painting more projects too with it haha. really nice to be able to spray doors with a fine finish tip & deluxe paint like Emerald Urethane from Sherwin

@@mcsqueegee81 that’s awesome! Thanks so much for the kind words and the painting tips. I will have to look into a sprayer for future projects. Also, I love it that you do Christmas lighting! I also do professional Christmas lighting - it’s such a fun industry to be part of!

Most paint that is that age will have lead. My advice would be to do your research for your local regulations and safety concerns.

@@olsenkated You're welcome. With a little will and want anything is possible in life never forget about that. I see so many young able bodies out there taking life for granted these day's. @@weirdmatter That is so sweet of you to say! I think so many people have forgotten what it is to take pride in what they do and own. Just because I can't afford to buy a move in ready, no maintenance required house, doesn't mean that I can't have a nice home to live in. It was a fun process to restore the outside of this old home. And quite affordable. But I am so glad to be finishing up with the massive project that I signed up for haha. It was a little time consuming.
