I developed a new method of painting on fabric using acrylic paint without fabric medium! I am so happy with the results I got from this! I couldn't find anything similar online.
You just need some water and hair conditioner. The end result turns out looking like a cool faded design that embeds the pigments into the fibers. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you too!
Let me see what you create! You can easily send in your art work by uploading it to our Facebook page HERE --- theartclubonline

It depends on what type of fabric you painting on.If you're painting on a stiff fabric like denim or canvas undiluted acrylic paint works on those kind of stiff fabrics.However if you're painting on thin flexible fabric like t shirt fabric then you should use half water half acrylic paint and a drop of conditioner like you say.

As an painting artist, I have always learned that diluting acrylic with too much water breaks the chemical bonding of the acrylic paint, therefore we use medium to thin the paint. So it makes me wonder how it doesn’t affect your result using that amount of water. Have you tried to use medium to dilute your paint? You can even buy fabric medium. Have you tried that?
@MichaelJaikaran
@MichaelJaikaran 2 жыл бұрын
This is because she uses the conditioner. Conditioners and fabric softeners are a type of chemical that creates a thin layer coat on any fabric that they are applied on. It bonds within the fabric and on top of the fabric which is why the design looks bright when first painted. However, when washed it is a slight bit lighter, because only the part that had the paint and conditioner bonded into the fabric is what remains.

When you are painting on fabric with acrylic paint, some time the paint will start drying soon, in that case when you are mixing the paint in the ice tray, you can add a pinch of Urea which is used in the agriculture fertilizer, it will look like sugar or salt. adding this will slow down the drying process.

If you allowed it to dry and then maybe even put it in the dryer for a few minutes on medium heat, then no the paint shouldn’t totally wash out. It does fade, but it shouldn’t wash out entirely. From my experience though, this method works on white fabric better than colored fabric. But experimenting is the best way to find out what works for you!

@TheArtClubOnline
@TheArtClubOnline Жыл бұрын
Well from my experience it kind of depends on your fabric. I have done this and it lasted really well and I’ve also done it and it faded too much. My best advice is, don’t use too much conditioner or water, and also, it works best on white or very light fabric. But you should be able to wash it no problem. I have one that I wash all the time and it’s still very bright! Also, be sure to heat set it before washing. Once you let it dry for a day, put it in the dryer on medium to high heat for a few minutes. That will help set the paint.

Could I put the mixture in a spray bottle and use a stencil?
@TheArtClubOnline
@TheArtClubOnline Жыл бұрын
This could potentially work as long as your spray bottle puts out a fine mist... if it's too wet it will bleed. Also, you'd have to cover the rest of the shirt entirely so it wouldn't get any over-spray on it. And my last thought is, the spray bottle could potentially clog with the paint. Another idea could be to use a sponge and stencil. Just again make sure not to wet the sponge too much or the paint will bleed.

What does the conditioner do?
@TheArtClubOnline
@TheArtClubOnline Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it just helps soften the acrylic paint so it can sink into the fibres of the fabric.

What if your using permanent acrylic paint marker pens ?
@TheArtClubOnline
@TheArtClubOnline Жыл бұрын
Hmm, if it’s coming from a marker I’m not sure how you would do this. However, you could always try with just the markers on a piece of fabric that isn’t important. Just use the paint marker on it and let it dry then see how it does. I’m not very familiar with acrylic markers so I don’t know if it will work well on its own or not. Worth a try! :)

Forgot to mentioned what type of conditioner do you use ?
@TheArtClubOnline
@TheArtClubOnline Жыл бұрын
I can't remember what brand I used, but I don't think it will really make a difference. Any regular hair conditioner should work the same. It just softens the paint so it will be more flexible when it's dry. :)

Might work if it's acrylic. Maybe give it a try on some fabric that you can throw away after.

Why is it necessary to add conditioner?
@TheArtClubOnline
@TheArtClubOnline 9 ай бұрын
Because that is what helps the paint to become softer so it can sink into the fabric. Without conditioner the paint will dry hard and will most likely crack.

Can this work on a black shirt?
@TheArtClubOnline
@TheArtClubOnline Жыл бұрын
I don’t think it will work on a black shirt. Someone suggested painting with white first, but I’m not sure that will work either since the paint really sinks into the fibres with this method. Try on a scrap piece of black fabric maybe.

Hi do you think this method would work on the sock lining of a sneaker?
@TheArtClubOnline
@TheArtClubOnline 2 жыл бұрын
It's a possibility! If it's a fabric like nylon, I would assume it would bleed quite a bit though so maybe lessen your amount of conditioner and water by a bit. Also, if you can test it out on a fabric that is similar (and that doesn't matter), you get to see how it will do. Best of luck!

Conditioner ?? Hair conditioner? Brand ? Any brand ?
@TheArtClubOnline
@TheArtClubOnline 5 ай бұрын
Yes hair conditioner. It softens the paint and helps it sink into the fabric fibres. I think any brand should work. Most basic conditioners do relatively the same thing.

Should i wash it with soap?
@TheArtClubOnline
@TheArtClubOnline Жыл бұрын
It wouldn’t hurt to not use soap the first time you put it in the washing machine. Just try to heat set it first by putting it in the hot dryer for a few minutes once the paint has dried for a day.

@TheArtClubOnline
@TheArtClubOnline 9 ай бұрын
I haven’t because it really isn’t going to be able to cover dark fabrics very well. Someone did suggest painting white first but I really don’t know how well that would work since we are kind of watering down the paint. You could MAYBE try just adding a bit of conditioner without the water and do a little test run on a dark fabric that doesn’t matter. I hope that helps!
