Hi everyone,
In todays video we set up the compressor, applied some body filler and began painting the doors.
This is a first for us, but overall we are very happy with how it went. We need to sand the doors with a high grit sandpaper (800-1200 grit) and then reapply the clear coat to make the doors a little more glossy. But all things considered, we are pretty happy.
Once we’ve got the doors finalised, it’s onto the rest of the car. Super excited to see how it looks once it’s all been painted.
Thanks for watching!

Nice choice of colour. Look forward to seeing it once the whole car is painted.

Nice work guys, paintwork seems like one of those jobs that's easy to do but difficult to master. Good first effort, sure the next attempt will come up sweet 👌

I'd say you should sit and watch some videos on painting before going further, why miss so many dents in the doors? Get your filler in and use a block with 80 grit until the filler is smooth, if your not going over the filler with a fine 2 part stopper then give the panel a thin coat of matt black, now reblock using 180 or 320, the black will stay in the low spots so you can see when the panel is level, once your happy panel wipe the surface and apply a thin coat of etch primer, can be aerosol, only need a thin coat, this is really important on aluminium as it aids adhesion. Now go straight over the etch with 3 or 4 coats of your 2k high build primer, once dry give the panel a mist coat of satin black and block sand the primer with some 6 or 800 wet and dry or 400 dry disc on sander , yet again the black will show your highs and lows. If you rub through to the metal give the bare alloy a light coat of the etch before colour. Once your happy, panel wipe, blow off, tack rag the panel and apply your base coat, keep the first coat light, not too wet, then apply 3 to 4 coats, you can tack rag between coats once the paint has flashed off or even lightly sand out any dirt nibs with some 800 wet and dry, don't do this on the last colour coat though. Once happy, tack off and apply 2 to 3 coats of 2k clear, first coats can be not to wet, last coat wants to really flow out. I always go around panel edges first before the main face of the panel, leave a good 10 to 15 mins between coats on a good day, once it's dry you can sand any dirt nibs out with some 1200 wet and dry and machine polish with some G3. The colour you've picked will exaggerate ripples and dents, in general the lighter the colour the more you get away with, white hides a lot, black shows ripples. Work on your gun technique, paint edge to edge with 50% overlap, I prefair panels verticle as you'll get less crap landing in your work, start at the bottom of the panel and do edge to edge strokes watching the reflection to guage how wet the material is going on . Remember, paintwork is 90% prep, 5% aplication and 5% luck 👍

Thank you mate appreciate you taking the time to write that! What do you think of sanding the clear back with 800 then re doing the clear? To get a shiny finish? And yeah I agree we missed way too many spots with the body filler the panel is not good shape at all! We can’t afford drying racks at the moment it’s on the list of stuff to buy!

@@archieandbensadventures Yes, you could sand the clear, prob best with 1000 wet and dry and don't break through the clear or you'll be screwed, you won't be able to just clear coat and if you just recolour the section you will find that the thinners in your colour can crack up the lacquer edge where you rubbed through. I'd do the rest of the dents, reprime and re colour as I can't see the point in spending money on paint if you don't do the dents. Focus on one panel until you get it right, filler is best shaped and sanded with a coarse paper like 80 grit, bigger areas with 40 grit to knock the top off the filler. Keep the filler dry as well, it will absorb moisture and cause micro blisters in your top coat later on. I use a 2k fine filler as a skim over the filler, I flat this with 320 paper, the fine filler fills the 40 or 80 grit sanding marks so the primer has less work to do and there's less chance of shrinkage marks later on. A guide coat is really good for showing highs and lows, aerosol matt black or you can buy black powder that does the same, it will really show any prep marks or unevenness. On the right day you can get just the same finish painting outside as you can in a booth, weather conditions need to be on your side though 👍

Okay ill do that! How do I know I’m close to breaking though the clear coat?
@andicog

@@archieandbensadventures You won't really know, when your paper turns blue you've gone too far! Depends really how much lacquer you got on to start with, 2 good full coats will take a good bit of flatting with 1200 wet and dry before it will break through , be careful on the edges, if you do break through and want to recolour that section before re lacquering, make sure your first coat or colour is light as it's the thinners that will attack the lacquer edge. How rough is your lacquer? If it's not too bad you could use a grey scotch pad to key it up, panel wipe, tack off and 2 nice wet coats of lacquer.

I think we won’t worry about the dents too much, as we’re going to take if off roading and we only get to work on the car once a week due to working so we will be there forever if we chase every dent! From what you’ve said I think we will sand down with 1000 all over the panel then give it a light coat of clear, then 2 more wet coats and it should look shiny!?

Not such an issue on Aluminium (due to corrosion), but you should prime the metal prior to filling. Glossyness, even with 2-pack paint, comes down to temperature and humidity. You applied the clear at dusk, when the temperature would be dropping rapidly during the cure time and humidity would be increasing in proportion. High gloss clearcoat needs warm and dry conditions (ideally 20-25 degrees). If you want to base coat and clear coat in one day, you should start early(ish - base needs some temperature to flash off nicely) on a nice day and get the clear down mid afternoon at the latest. Or base one day, and clear the next.

hey love the content, got a question. How do you guys know what to fix with your cars, like for the jeep how did you figure out what were the issues and the same for the defender, also how the hell did you get a defender for so cheap?!

Hello thank you for watching! Honestly We just use KZfaq/Google and Search the problem we are having. Reddit is also great as you can join groups i.e like a jeep Cherokee group and ask questions in there. The most important thing is just try! We’re not experts by any means and off camera we also make lots of mistakes, but it’s a learning curve! Regarding the defender price, I just check Facebook market place everyday and look for good deals! Have fun and get stuck in!

loving this series lads! If you get a chance could u put the links to the compressor & guns into ur bio? just a little bit of advice - slower sweeps with the spray gun will give you a more even finish (letting go of the trigger when you've done a full pass over the door). Keep at it, you're doing really well!
