I've found that oil washes over an acrylic base are a great way to paint skeletons quickly. Oil pin washing is such a great way of getting clean lines of shadow into those hard-to-reach areas, like in between the ribs. Gives the bone and rusty metal a nice weathered look too. Because you can never have too many skellies.
@Miniac
@Miniac Жыл бұрын
I've really struggled with getting consistent, clean results with oil washing. I haven't found that magical dilution, wait time, and clean up method that gets me crispy lines. I keep dabbling and I know I'll find it eventually. One of my skeletons got an oil wash during my research process.

@@Miniac I use water mixable oils, I used them for painting (pictures) for years they have a good combination of workability, colour depth and ease of use. Easier on brushes and your lungs too no white spirit required.
@Wijkert
@Wijkert Жыл бұрын
@@Miniac What really helped me is dapping the brush on a piece of paper towel (not wet this time;) ), if the white spirit spreads faster than the oil, it is too thin. Also easier to tell how thinned down the oil wash is this way.

These look outstanding Scott! Achieving a split complimentary duality with a red that leans towards vermillion, and the blue-green tones on the bone and armor was brilliant. I was very happy to see that you did not put any verdigris on your gold as I see so many painters mistakenly do, since gold does not tarnish. The yellow on top of the skulls as your primary light source works great with the warmth of the red. You made some simple animated skeletons look foreboding and menacing. Sepia, by the way has a long "E" sound rather than a short "e." [see pee uh] There was a fella in my design classes in college that kept pronouncing the hue cyan as cayenne pepper. hehe. It drove my professor nuts, she eventually had to straighten him out. We all learned that day that it is important as graphic designers to know how to pronounce our hues if we wanted to get careers. hehe. You can look this up on Google or in a dictionary if you want to see the pronunciation listed. Also The Spanish language does not have a "V" as in Victor sound. The have a letter "V," as you can see in Vallejo, but it is pronounced like a softer letter "B." Also, whenever you see a double "L" in any Spanish origin word it is pronounced the same as an English letter, "Y." So Vallejo is pronounced as Bah yay ho. If you think that is confusing, they also have three letters that can sound like a letter "H," and some of those can also sound like something else depending on what other sounds follow or precede it, and the actual letter "H," in Spanish isn't pronounced at all! Every language has their quirks.

Funny enough the "skip the primer" nudge was how I started. I didn't know about priming models at first so I jumped straight into painting a Hormagaunt on bare plastic... and over a year later it's still absolutely fine. Also discovered that contrast doesn't look half bad on gray plastic that way. Didn't know what contrast paint meant back then but now I'm kinda itching to try it again with some actual knowledge under my belt.
