Hello my friends and in this video I am painting the mighty Balrog miniature from Games Workshop. This monstrous miniature is a real treat to paint. I've tried to mix in a few cool and unique techniques into this one and have incorporated "speed paints" and "inks" to create some great fiery effects. As always my friends please let me know in the comments section what you think of my version of the awesome Balrog model. I always love to hear from you and engage with you too.

Thank you so much for your continued support and awesomely positive comments. This channel has been fuelled by you guys and the more you watch, comment and like the content the more content I will post. This channel was made during lockdown simply to show my friends how I paint in my spare time and since then it has grown into a nice little platform with quite a lot of content. Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments bellow and I will get back to you and answer you to the best of my ability.
As always Thank you for tuning in and watching and I hope you enjoyed this video and I really do hope that it helps you on your painting adventures.
I would like to add a special thank you to my good friend Mark Llewellyn for his amazing backing music. My videos wouldn't be anywhere near as good without them.
Also a massive thank you to my good friend Chris Dixon for his artwork on my banner.

This is really cool! Basically I'm using a completely different set of paints for my miniatures, but I still try with yours. First of all it looks great, but also you have such a good voice for this kind of videos that listening to you was a pleasure :)

That is very kind of you. Thank you so much. I’m really happy to know you enjoyed the video. I try to make my videos work well with lots of different paints so don’t feel like you have to use the exact same ones as I do. It’s more of a guide on how I painted mine. I wish you good luck with your painting and hope you enjoy it.

Dan that was amazing, better than I imagined in my head, mildly different to what I was anticipating but a real fantastic job again I love the dark red on the wings and the fire was just immense you could feel the heat. I've yet to experiment with contrast/speed paints I want to try to get a handle on classic painting style first but may need to dabble now, any preference?

Thank you so much for the kind words as always John. You are very kind. The fire was so much fun and so satisfying to paint. The idea of speed paints and contrast paints is to make painting easier and to need less stages when painting. They are very useful paints with some great applications, but I don't think they are perfect for all projects. I personally use them more as an extra tool or an extra style of painting. They can be fantastic for creating lava effects and creating great grey rocky bases. I have only really used the speed paint range and haven't used the citadel contrast myself. It's all down to personal choice and down to what kind of style and effects you would like to achieve. The best way to learn is to give them a try and see which ones you enjoy the most.

What is the first yellow you put was that acrylic
@Bread0fHeaven
@Bread0fHeaven 3 ай бұрын
Hello my friend it is indeed acrylic paint. The first colour is a pastel yellow colour from “Ak interactive” then a nice deep yellow from “Vallejo”. These two colours create a great base tone to work up from by using the speed paints. It’s an interesting and different way of painting fire that is vibrant, effective and really easy to do too. I hope this helps my formed and thanks so much for watching 👍🏻

Flat black? that looks shiny?
@Bread0fHeaven
@Bread0fHeaven 3 ай бұрын
It should be just the way the light is catching the model that makes it seem a little shiny. To the naked eye it is quite a flat tone. I always do recommend covering the models in a Matt varnish after they’ve been painted to protect the paint but it also adds that “flat” tone and brings the vibrancy of the colours together too. I hope this answers your question my friend, thank you so much for watching and commenting I appreciate it so much.

Hi Dan, I usually watch your videos 2x before I comment. I watched this one three times. I wanted to absorb all of the things you did. The final result of the 'lava' and 'internal evil' glow is exactly what I wanted to see. You did a fantastic job conveying this look. The body is magnificent. I'm a fan of basing white for vibrancy against a dark color. This allows for the brilliant colors, such as fire, to really come through with a glowing effect. The flames looked so good at all the stages of painting. I thought at certain times you were done but then you added another color. It was serendipity to watch the development of the process. The colors chosen for the flame are very harmonious and don't fight each other. This gives a very smooth transition of heat. The Tenebrous Gray application adds great contrast to the glow and defines its areas. This step begins to draw the model's features into focus. This looks like a fun and creative step. I like that you dry brushed the white before the Bloody Red brushing. Again, the pre-white makes the intensity of the dry brushed colors pop. ( I think I brought this to your attention when you painted the Dice Tower). The 'happy accidents' of Bob Ross really got me. The wings were a great blending tutorial. I am of the opinion though, that some of the yellow ink lost its intensity and went green but the over brush of dark color pushed it into the background and it becomes an excellent complement. I see that the contrast and values of the palette is what makes for a believable look. I really enjoy that. You nailed this one!! The final result is convincing and looks 'well painted'. My only critiques would be, the mold seams show (but I know how you feel about these things) and the amount of white along the dorsal is a bit too much. I would have liked to see a bigger blend reducing the width of the white to almost nil. That's what my eye sees anyway. Lastly, the flames have a strange finish to my eye. I don't know if they should be glossy or dead flat. It just seems odd to me and I'm not sure why. I'd like to know your thoughts on this. I have a question ( and maybe I missed it) but, what is OSL? I don't think I've heard this before. Thank you so much for treating this model with a slap-dash style. Wet blending, inks and free dry-brushing makes for a fun paint session. I'm glad you enjoyed the project. You did it justice and the glow effect really pleases me. It's a technique that I wanted to see you do. Thanks for delivering on that. You mentioned an Ink tutorial and I am interested in how they work and how to use them. Maybe you can expand on this product. Thank you so much as always for taking an interest in your subscriber's suggestions. I love the surprises it presents. I'll see you in the next one my friend, Peace and Calm to you. Michael Virtuoso

Wow Michael this is such a fantastic comment and I thank you so much for taking the time to really break this one down. I'm really glad you brought up the white basing to build up the vibrancy of the flames. You are completely correct in saying that this is something you mentioned to me in a previous video. This was my way of learning from you, building up my knowledge and skills and paying tribute to you to. It was a way of making this painting my personal to you as you have had an active input into the process of how it was painted. Not only did you send the model to me, you also gave me the ability to ring it to life with your comments and vision and I really wanted to make this one just as much your model as it is mine. I really hope that you like this idea and hope that my homage to you is a nice surprise for you too. Tenebrous grey is one of my all time favourite paints. It has a very dark, almost black colour to it, but it moves and takes to models in such a great way that it makes it very simple to use with amazing results. The closest paint I have used to it would be Vallejo Model colour matt black. Using this colour to really bring the details and textures of the model together and tie that "lava" effect of the fire and rocks on this one was a lot of fun to do. It's one of the septs I enjoyed the most when painting this guy up and I felt like when I added this onto the model it really brought an almost finished look to the model. I am very happy you enjoyed the inking stage and got to see that even when I paint a model and make it look "bad" or "ruined" there is still a way of building it back up and creating some nice artistic effects out of what may seem like mistakes. I thought that adding the brighter colours underneath and then over brushing the dark colour would feel more natural and pleasing to look at than trying to paint small bits of flame into the cracks of the wings. It was about trying something new and seeing where I could push it. As for the critiques. You are always welcome to add those here my friend. I learn a lot from you and the way you see things and it often helps me to improve and I am very, very grateful for that. You are perfectly right about the mould lines and someone else pointed them out to me as well. I'll be honest that when I built the model it completely passed me by and I had no idea it would be something so noticeable. I normally do try my best to avoid them as much as I can, but this one completely escaped me. The white across the flame is a great point as well. I will in future try to adopt the "less is more" rule when painting these white areas so that it can help to create a bit more of a subtle effect and become more pleasing too. I know what you mean by the flames having a feel on the eye. It might be that I like to matt varnish all my models to protect them. I often use this as the last stage to tie the colours together and to keep my paint nice and safe too. Maybe this matt effect is throwing the flames off a little. I will do my best to make a nice tutorial on inks in future. I have a small list of models I am working through at the moment and will add the inks in to the list. Again my friend I thank you so, co much for the great and detailed comment, I am so happy that you enjoyed seeing the model that you sent painted on video. I wanted to keep it to the video version, but also add my own little personal touches too. At the same time I wanted to make sure that I made it to a standard that you would appreciate and enjoy. It has been a fun journey doing this one and it taught me a great deal along the way. You always find a way of pushing me and the videos forward and this was no different. Diolch yn fawr iawn.
