Following on from the sketch, here I show you how to paint a watercolour of a railway bridge over the River Morar, West coast of Scotland painting the scene as it was with the disappearing bridge.
Here is the video of me finding the spot and doing a sketch

I’ve just started attending water colour classes, and I’ll be honest I get a much better feel of putting the colours down when watching you. Thank you so much.

Hi Grace, It’s great that you’re getting into Water and going to classes. There are so many different ways to teach Watercolour. I like the idea of keeping it simple and not to over complicate things. The feel you mentioned important, which I think is painting with a happy brush. Keep practising! Best wishes, James

Hi Wendy, Glad you like this video so much and that it keeps on giving! The painting is sitting in my lounge, framed, leaning against the wall and I do enjoy looking at it. It has a nice quality to it. I hope your painting is going well. Best wishes, James

Hi Cheryl, I do enjoy a looser style of painting and for the eye to sort of work it out a bit, I think it makes it more fun that way. Glad you enjoyed the process. Best wishes, James

Hi John , One of the interesting things about Watercolour painting is that it has such a nice name but underneath the name there’s a lot of tension. Hope your painting is going well! Best wishes, James

Hi Trevor, Glad you enjoyed the video and the painting. I’m not sure it’s really ever easy to do, there’s always tension when painting with Watercolour . One quote I like is Watercolour is making an emergency out of a catastrophe. That sort of sums it up.😊 Thanks for watching, Best wishes, James

Hi James, thanks for sharing your sketching technique, I noticed your pencil looked like a biro? I like the idea of omitting the modern road bridge to enhance the old bridge. Also the idea of composing a quick sketch then painting it back home in the studio. I also enjoyed seeing the scenery of Scotland, open and beautiful. I have never been around there but I hope to experience it myself. Cheers Steve
@JamesPotterAboutArt
@JamesPotterAboutArt 3 ай бұрын
Hi Steve, Yes, I like using a biro for drawing. It gives such a good line and best of all it doesn’t smudge unlike pencil. The new bridge wasn’t that good so restoring the scene to how it was was interesting. Scotland is such a great place for painting. I hope you manage a trip up here. Best wishes, James

Thank James, I see what you mean by it being easier to paint out of doors rather than using multiple references in the studio,as you did here. One interesting thing I noted nothing to do with the painting, you have marked off your hardboard frame into halves and third segments, which I guess is usefull when scaling up your sketch onto the larger piece of paper.

Hi Martyn, It definitely seems to be a simpler process painting out doors. Everything seems right and you don’t have to interpret things. Well, noticed about the marks on the board. I use them when I’m in the studio not for outdoors. Just makes it a little bit easier and quicker. Best wishes, James

Lovely and inspirational. This is the way I normally paint (from a photo) but I am much too fussy and don’t know when to stop. When you frame your water colour do you use glass and if so do you get it cut to size when you buy it or cut it yourself ? Something I have been exploring, doing my own framing. Thank you for another great video.
@JamesPotterAboutArt
@JamesPotterAboutArt 2 ай бұрын
Hi Mike, It is a very effective way to paint, but it can make things more complicated painting from photos. It does sound easier to do but it always seems to take three times as long. I buy my glass in sheets and then I cut it down to the correct size. It’s really not that difficult to do and well worth investing in the tools. Glad you enjoyed the video. Best wishes, James
