In this second of a two part episode, I finish building a heavily customised, fully illuminated Revell/Zvesda 1:2700 scale Imperial Star Destroyer from Star Wars with 350 meters of Fiber Optic Cable, 30+ LEDs, a custom 3D printed base and custom electronics.
For another amazing Star Destroyer build video, make sure you check out Rob Pauza's build of his Micro Star Destroyer at • Rob's Model Shop - Epi... and make sure you subscribe to his awesome channel.

I know this is nearly three years old, but it is still invaluable today! I have just started on the Revell 1/4000 Star Destroyer, and have decided that fibre optics is the best route for me. How I was going to do it was eluding me, but this has fitted the puzzle together. Thanks Mark, its truly a stunning project.....

Nice looking work on your Star Destroyer. 3 months on a model like this with all the drilling and running the fiber optics isn't bad. Try the big 350th Enterprise Refit. That takes close to a year to complete.

You do nice work. I am 60 years old and have been building models for 48 years now. I grew up with Star Trek. The only Star Wars movies I ever really saw was Star Wars back when it was first released in theaters back in 1977, and the Empire Strikes Back when it came out. Never followed the franchise like I did with Star Trek as that is what I grew up with in the 60's on TV. Nothing wrong with Star Wars as I have been building a lot of the Bandai kits. Even going so far as to doing lighting on the tiny Super Star Destroyer and Imperial Star Destroyer as well as the 350th Millennium Falcon. Also did a really cool diorama with several of the Bandai Death Star Attack sets with some really cool lighting effects. I was going to build the Revell/Zvezda kit, but with all my large scale Star Trek models and other sci-fi like Battlestar Galactica models and now doing a lot of Star Wars Bandai kits, I just don't have the room for many more large scale models. I opted for the Revell build and play Imperial Star Destroyer which is a carbon copy of this kit as far as all the trench and surface detail goes, but I completely lit that with over 300 feet of. 25mm fiber optics that I ran through some 1070 holes I drilled with a pin vise. I got rid of the folding feet on the bottom as well as all the sound and light unit holes, added some extra detail, even did little laser cannon effects in the side trenches. I did a complete build series on it. I am currently working on the Bandai 1/5000th Star Destroyer with my own lighting and will also be building the 144th scale Force Awakens Millennium Falcon with lighting and photo etch. I will be adding the floodlight effects in the side trenches on the Bandai Star Destroyer as I do all my own lighting and design and make my own circuit boards for my models. The new Bandai Star Destroyer has so much detail it will put most high end resin kits to shame. Again you did a nice job and I will be checking out some of your other work in the future when I get a break from all my commission builds. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

The solution to the larger hole and threading the fiber optic is to (melt the end of fiber optic cable) with a candle on the bench. Takes a few seconds. It forms a mushroom shape (lens). This method allows you to thread the fiber optic where the mushroomed end won`t pull through. Then glue as described on the inside. You also get a nicer light effect as well due to the round lens effect of the melted end. It transmits light even better than a straight cut fiber.

hi mark wanted to ask a quick question on the panel lining. do you gloss first? I also have a black colored pencil for the paneling. Would you recommend lead pencil instead. One last question. Due to the corona virus I'm a little bit stuck with the bare minimum for a wash. I have black acrylic paint, alcohol and dish soap. Do you have a recommendation on how to make my own wash. Any help would be much appreciated. And also thank you for your time!
@MarkRhodesMaker
@MarkRhodesMaker 4 жыл бұрын
Valeria Fa black pencil would look fine I think, might be harder to remove it though. For a wash take your acrylic paint and water it down until it’s very thin, but still pigmented. Play with adding dish soap, sometimes you want surface tension, sometimes not. I almost always gloss coat before washes, but sometimes this can have a negative effect, like in this video, as the panel lines were so shallow after a gloss that the wash didn’t work well on them. You could try a lining or a wash without gloss and see if it runs better! Hit me up on social media with you results! 🙂

I really like the build you did. Just 2 questions though. Why didn't you paint the inside black first? And can it 'harm' the lighting/electrics in any way of painting them over afterwards?
@MarkRhodesMaker
@MarkRhodesMaker 4 жыл бұрын
Noos Art I only noticed the light leakage after painting, so the black came later. Don’t think it would harm the electronics being painted as they are just LEDs and wires.

Mark how did you deal with the overlap of the top and bottom hull parts that are behind the side pieces? I am looking at my build and have the sides on but if I drill and place fiber the top part will hit the fiber when I try to bring them together. Did I you cut off that part or keep the fiber to only half of the side sections? Awesome job on your build.
@MarkRhodesMaker
@MarkRhodesMaker 4 жыл бұрын
R Mac thanks! I modified the top and bottom pieces. I think I cut off or back the vertical walls. Drop me a picture on Twitter or Insta of the bit you mean, and I’ll confirm. @mrhodes on Twitter, @markoftherhodes on Insta 🙂

nice build, but i am wondering, why use a pencil instead of gray ink wash? its a great build regardless but curious as to why you chose pencil. maybe it'll be a method i may use when i eventually build that monster. thank you!!
@MarkRhodesMaker
@MarkRhodesMaker 9 ай бұрын
Great question. It's because these panels lines are so shallow I couldn't get a wash to flow, pencil / graphite worked wonders. I could have scribed them out, but that would have been a much longer process.

Nice work! One question: You don't seem concerned with getting paint on the seams where the pieces will be glued together - is this genuinely of no concern, or do you have a method to make sure the paint does not interfere with the styrene glue?
@MarkRhodesMaker
@MarkRhodesMaker 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! From memory I wasn’t too concerned. I would usually tape off where I thought it might cause a problem, but didn’t see many problematic areas except in the bridge superstructure
