In this video, I talk about the principles of lighting and theory behind doing Non-Metallic Metal (NMM), and go straight from there to painting the gold aquila on a GW Terminator. As always, the best visual reference is real metal surfaces, from which to draw inspiration.
My painting competition is in full swing over on my Facebook page:

Paul Zagaris Hi Paul, and thanks for the kind comments. You can very easily look up the equivalents by Googling them. Hence why I do not normally add in a huge paint list at the start (with all the equivalents), as people will forget them half way through anyway. There isn't an exact match for the Leprous Brown paint - the closest new citadel paint you will get (which is actually very close) is either Tau Light Ochre or Zamesi Desert. Failing that, the exact match from VGC is Scrofulous Brown. Thank you very much for watching Paul!

MrRlg2010 Lol! No. Man, using these techniques are actually really forgiving, as the paint can be manipulated and moved on the actual model. And you have much increased drying/setting time, so you can simply wipe it off with your finger and try the step again. Thanks for watching man!

Thanks Kris! I am trying a new style of doing the tutes now, with the camera in front of me. You are right, I should have used another light and diffused it. I will correct this for the next one. Do you think that style is good? With doing the normal speed theory and talking at the start, followed by 3x speed with a voice over later? Oh, and painting with the camera in front is so darn awkward - trying to paint to a half-decent standard is a real challenge!
@WayoftheBrush

Colour of the Gods I did really like the theory segment in the beginning. If you continue to do one (and you should), maybe go over the theory that specifically relates to what will be shown in the tutorial. What I mean by that is your diagram could have shown how you are planning the highlights on the aquila as well. Rather than talking about how NMM works on a curve show how you apply that particular knowledge to the wings. Something like that... ;) Overall a real good vid. I like the sped up moments, but edit out the dead spaces. Also staying in frame. I only noticed it a couple of times but it's no biggy... And Yes painting for the camera is a pain.

Nice vid, nice Tech! Couple of thoughts- are you able to push the quality to 1080? it would give your paint jobs a better look in the vid as you could really enjoy the end result. The new GW glazes/washes- have you tried using them as an alternative or would their colour intensity/saturation push the effect to much. Keep up the great work!

Eric French Thanks! The NMM Gold can be applied to loads of forces, not just the Imperial stuff - but I suppose it is most appropriate on the Imperial stuff. Yeah, I have yet to get a magnifying lamp. I really need to actually, but this not being able to walk crap kinda makes it hard to go out and get things. I guess I am just blessed with good vision. Thank you very much for watching dude!

I'm just not sure I want to paint my Khorne Lord of Skulls with nmm lol. Maybe my juggernaut Herald though! Why can you not walk. Please don't tell me polyneuropathy, I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. If I had any enemies :-)
@ColourOfTheGods
@ColourOfTheGods 10 жыл бұрын
No, I do not have polyneuropathy, but I do have neuropathic pain in my right foot due to nerve damage from cold. I can't walk due to being injured in the military, so I have ended up with osteochondritis dessicans in my right femoral medial condyle, slightly posteriorly. It is pretty darn painful, and prevents me from walking. Next step is to potentially have a partial knee replacement, but this is not a good think at age 27.
@Finn-McCool
@Finn-McCool 10 жыл бұрын
Ouch my wife just had total knee replacement back in late Sept. At age 46 it is young, 27 is WAY young. With a one year recovery though everyone I've spoken with says it's miraculous. Several of her family members needed it and so they support her tremendously. Best of luck my man. I know for me personally, painting/modeling is a good distraction from the pain. I hope it is for you as well.

Xander Fish Hi Xander, Well, the answer is a maybe - but probably no. There are plenty of tutorials out there on how to paint Dark Angels Space Marines, so there isn't much point in me expending my time for that. That said however, I concentrate only on the more advanced techniques, so I may do advanced green, which could be used for DA.

Great video! Help a lot with my nmm gold miniatures. One question, what is the skin test for pain saturation that you mention in the beginning? I am intereseted on that because I struggle to get the right amount of water when I am diluting GW/vallejo paints. I normally put too much, which makes the paint to flow into the recessers.
@ColourOfTheGods
@ColourOfTheGods 9 жыл бұрын
Ferran Grau Leal Hi Ferran! So the skin test just means that you put a little bit on your skin and if it runs into the recesses and folds in your skin then the consistency is about right. Don't use water for GW paints - it gives the paint a bad quality and is not great to work with. I would recommend the medium that GW sell, called Lahmian Medium - as this is the stuff the paints already have in them to thin it down. With Vallejo, then use water - as Lahmian Medium will screw up Vallejo paints.
@ferrangrau8392
@ferrangrau8392 9 жыл бұрын
Colour of the Gods the lahmian medium really changed the dilution and consistency of GW paints. As you said, vallejo are well diluted with just water, but I wanted to try their own vallejo glaze medium and the results I am getting with this medium are good enough for both vallejo and GW paints, I think even better than with lahmiam medium (give it a try if you hadn't yet). I am getting closer to a nmm gold (but more yellowish in my case, since I am paiting high elves) and mostly thanks to you. Cheers!

Oh gosh, there's a question. I don't actually know off the top of my head, I'd need to have a look for you. The problem is the newer colours don't match up 100% and there's slight variation. I would usually just eyeball it and pick a colour that I think would work.
