If you want expert instructions on how to paint your War of the Ring miniatures this video won't help much. If you want some tips on how to make a pretty decent set of miniatures then this just might be for you. I've never painted miniatures before this but I did do a LOT of research on the web and then did a pretty decent job. This is a distillation of what I learned to help people like me who don't have a lot of experience painting miniatures and would like to avoid the most common mistakes and get a decent grasp of some basic tips and techniques. I'd definitely recommend you check out some of the other guys videos and blogs about this subject before you jump into it, but this video I think is a pretty good place to start. I hope you enjoy it! KC

Great video!! I'd like to add some advice to any newer WotR aspiring painters: Use a good miniature spray primer. They're a bit more expensive, but will save you the 'primer frustrations' and save that micro detail on the model. If you really want a quick primer cheat ready-for-the-table-look, do a zenithal prime (black base coat, grey mist at 45 degree angle, and white mist from straight above). Next, always use miniature paints. Yes, they're pricier too. They will absolutely save the micro detail and thin down really, really well. The level of control you can get with them just can't compare (especially on the super small scale of WotR miniatures). Consider a wet palette. You can make one yourself. Just do a quick youtube search. It will keep your paints wet and workable for days. Super handy for painting your armies assembly line style. Drybrushing: super easy to learn and super effective for making those edges/fine details pop. Lastly, consider buying a good wash. Citadel probably makes the best on the market. One pot of Nulin Oil will handle your entire box. Again, this stuff just runs circles around what a paint-based wash will do.

I keep coming back to your video ... yeah, for a couple of years now, actually. I've finally decided that I'll make this a 'project' and will attempt this soon. Your video is very useful and I'll follow many of your tips. I guess the only thing you don't mention is the usefulness of a wet palette. I don't paint, so maybe nobody was using a wet palette back in 2013. Lol. Anyway, I've assembled most of my materials, I've straightened and cleaned my minis and will start this weekend. *gulp* wish me luck!

@@damonbrearley3202 I haven't yet but this winter for sure! I have all of my supplies. I'm doing some test painting on other figures first ... just started painting all the minis for Sea of Legends, a board game that has 40 or so great figures. I figure I'll go the speed-paint route, having bought mostly Army Painter Speed Paints and Metallics, plus I've invested in an air brush and other supplies. I hoping to start over the Christmas holidays. There are a lot of minis - 240 just in the basic game, plus I have all of the expansions. Speed painting or slap chop seems to be the quickest way to do this and I won't be getting super-detailed on them. When I have some pics, I'll share. 🙂

1. Buy high magnification reading glasses at the $1 store (Goodwill has them also). Works better (and is more comfortable) than that magnification apparatus. Instead, focus on good lighting, the more natural the better. 2. Forget latex gloves. Put one dab of superglue on X (X=anything you can attach the mini to so you can paint it from any angle without touching it. The eraser on the end of a pencil as an example) #3. Use white primer. Period. You can use any primer (don't have to send $20 on "special" mini primer.). Also doesn't hurt to have paint on primer (this I'd get from the hobby store) so in case you missed an area with the spray or need to scrape some mold lines away that you missed...you can just paint a small bit of primer on instead of having to spray again. Also, less messy so if you live in an apartment or some place where you can't get out and spray paint...just paint the primer on. 4. DO NOT BUY SHIT PAINT!!!! While you can skimp in some areas you absolutely want to spend the $3 per tiny jar of paint formulated for Miniatures (Games Workshop, Vallejo, etc). Believe me, HUGE difference. 5. THIN YOUR PAINTS!! All the time!! You're not painting a wall in your house where "one coat" is everyone's dream. On minis you want to work in thin layers. Doing this will improve your shading, glazes, washes, etc later on when you move to those techniques.

Really awesome video Kevin! FYI to viewers: with the 2nd edition I have seen a few people warning against using Krylon primer with the miniatures. This is because they react poorly with it - they get sticky and the paint peels off after a couple months. I used Design Master primer for mine
@khtkruse
@khtkruse 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip! Kevin mentions the black stayed tacky even after days of drying (and I saw that other people had the same issue), and I thought it the problem may have been the kind of primer itself. I watched another painting tutorial that talks about Reaper Bones minis not reacting well to primer - I wonder if this is the same type of plastic. That guy used cheap craft store acrylic (not thinned) as a primer for that specific type of mini.

Did mine as simple as possible. Left companions & minions original silver/grey and dry brushed gold over to high light. White spray primer the rest different color ink wash for each army. Silver dry brush regular unit weapons, armor. Gold dry brush elite weapons, armor and leader flags, armor. Simple, still took for ever. Looks great!

Great advice. Particularly the part about "the zen" of painting. I just finished painting my BattleLore set, which took over 200 hours and what you said is very true. The act of painting is very relaxing and the time does escape from you. The only piece of advice I might have to offer is to make certain and setup a place to paint that is dedicated to the task. I made the mistake of using the dining room and it was more than a month before we were able to use the dining room table again. :-)

This video has been really nice. There is one thing I have been having trouble with though and that's fixing bent miniatures. So I will dip them into hot water for a short bit and bend them into place and hold it as I dip it into cold water for a few seconds. All will look fine but as the figure starts to dry off it seems to slowly bend back to how it was. Sometimes it will not be as extreme but I have had to repeatedly fix the same minis. I wonder if there are more steps needing to be done, maybe I need to be a bit more aggressive on bending them into place after dipping them in the water or perhaps the water I was using wasn't hot enough.

These minis are tough to paint; the plastic is "bendy", so large chance of paint breaking. My dream is to use the 25% larger board with the upcoming anniversary set and use games workshop minis... Though that will cost about 1100 dollars for the minis new

HAHA... I kept the horses the same color for the exact same reason! My rule of thumb was anything that I could do to keep the armies easily differentiated from one another and easily discern what nation they are from was a higher priority over detail work (ie. different colored horses, hair, beards, outfits, and even "basing"). My bases are entirely the color of the nation they are from. No flocking or fake grass. This too helps immensely.

great video! just what i need to get started. u have a good narrator voice, and u are good at making things clear! have u worked with news casting or similar? ... question: dont u use something to coat them when they are done? something that protects and keeps the paint from rubbing off when u handle the pieces afterwards. it is water color after all and the oils in our fingers tend to wear off that sort of paint. cheers.

I've begun painting my War of the Rings miniatures after this video inspired me to do so! Things are looking pretty good so far. Question: I bought a spray can of Krylon Matte Finish. Would this work ok in sealing the paint on the miniatures? Thanks!

I've used that before and I think it works fine (but then, I'm a self-avowed dummy). I didn't go over sealing in the video but that is an important step to keep the paint from flaking off, especially if you're going to store them all together back in the box.

Kevin Clay Thanks…I have the board games and I think it would be fun to make the monsters look more monstrous with paint…There is a video I saw of a father and his son "unboxing" one of the games and the father asks the son what he likes about them most, and he says "Monsters!" Not the heroes. I am with that little kid. I think the monsters can really transport you and the paint can make your imagination go, while you are doing it an afterward…But I want to learn as much as I can before I try it myself, because I want the monsters to be monstrous. :)

I finished painting those miniatures but what i found out was that the paint that was sold to me, was coming off again because it was Old or rotten. So now what i have is one nice looking painted side, and one side that looks painted with bits and pieces.. I haven't found the motivation doing it all over again... One good thing to my story is that the shop where i bought the paints has been closed, which imo couldn't come soon enough because truth to be told, no one should get bad paint when they love to do what we do, even when we're just starting out..
