3 жыл бұрын

James Gurney paints a snow pile using just ultramarine blue and burnt sienna, plus some white gouache. This limited-palette method is a popular painting method.
Arthur Guptill said, "A rich effect can be obtained with only a limited palette. A warm and cool combination affords the student the best approach to his color problems, especially as they relate to outdoor sketching."
E. Barnard Lintott said, "For a young student there cannot be a better way of entering upon the study of water colour than by rigorously banishing all but two colours from his palette. It is the best and surest way to the study of full colour. The colours should be a cold and warm one; cobalt blue and warm sienna-or Prussian blue and burnt sienna-are two combinations which lend themselves to a great variety of treatment."

Also, are we not gonna comment on just how cool James owned that slip at 00:55? He brushed it off like it was nothing, slipping as gracefully as he paints.

There should be a cable channel, or nowadays a new streaming service, that focuses just on art, drawing, and painting. An Art TV Channel. And on that channel James Gurney without a doubt would have a prime time show.

If I had to choose only two colors to paint with for the rest of my life, it would be burnt sienna and ultramarine. They really are the perfect compliments, and the neutrals they make are so deep and vairred. Thanks for the video!

I'm a superrealist oil painter myself. But I just love watching you work James. You haven't lost the magic, the awe, the wonder. The childlike enjoyment is so apparent. Sadly, so many artists lose it along the way. And if you haven't by now... Chances are you never will. When you paint for a living, this childlike magic is the first to go. And yet it's precisely where the magic lies, I've noticed this in myself. So it's so refreshing to witness the magic once again. Well, well done Sir And God bless. ❤

Just what I needed!! I recently bought two books with water color paper, one about the size of yours and one half that size, set to paint the view from my window on a, hopefully, daily basis. I'm a little scared, but you're an inspiration! I love the idea of limiting the palette. I used to use the entire rainbow, unable to contain myself! It took some doing to learn a little restraint and it made my paintings better. And, btw, the view from my window is the Seine, with it's many moods, colors and textures. I think I will have an interesting and educational year ahead of me! Thank you for the inspiration!
