Day eight - pencil drawing with Paintology, draw a face (portrait).
Hello everyone and welcome back to the eighth day of the shading exercise.
We will be expanding the skills using the shade brush tool of the Paintology app we learnt earlier.
If you have not done the previous days exercises, please go through them now as it will help you to create tones with the shade brush.
These are the fundamental core skills of art that are taught to all students who want to learn to draw.
It is not about using the app only, the exercises will ground you in the skills that are key to drawing and painting in all types of mediums.
In the last three exercises, we applied our skills of creating tones to making the nose, lips, and eyes.
In this exercise we will put together the nose, lips, and eyes and place them on a face template and make a complete portrait drawing.
I first made a template of the face, head and neck as shown here.
I Photoshopped the drawings that I did for the nose, lips and eyes and placed them onto this template.
You can see the template made that we will use for the drawing exercise.
It will form the basis of our drawing of the whole face using the shade brush.
It is a very good exercise to learn the subtle tones and shades that form the whole face.
You will also get a chance to work on the woman’s hair, which I have also drawn using the line brush.
To do this actual tutorial, please go to the pencil drawing category under tutorials and you will see it there.
Alternatively, you can search for #11075 from the home screen of the app.
I did the drawing on my Samsung phone using a stylus.
I would suggest using a cheap stylus to make this drawing on your Android phone.
The drawing took over an hour to do, but as a beginner you will need to give yourself more time to practice.
Here is the completed drawing using just the shade brush.
If you have not done so already, please go to the previous day exercises to learn how to create the tones using the shade brush.
It is important that you learn how to use the shade brush, otherwise you will not fully appreciate how to obtain the various tones in the portrait drawing.
The fun of portrait drawing has been finally brought back into the digital world.
No longer do you need to rely on complex tools to create the tones in digital drawing, you can draw just like pencil and paper with Paintology.
This way of drawing has always been available in the traditional mediums and teaches you important core skills in art.
Unlike the other previous days' videos where we had a reference image for each of the drawing, we will use a slightly different approach here.
For example, for the lips and the nose, I had a reference image on the same drawing for you to pick out the tones and apply it to your drawing.
For the eyes, we still had a reference image but it was in the trace mode. You needed to use a trace bar to move between your drawing and the reference image.
In this drawing, we don't have a reference image, so it would be a good idea to explain how to go about this drawing.
You will note that this drawing exercise comes with a video.
You will alternate between the video and your drawing and do your drawing to completion.
To do this, we make use of the toggle button shown, and alternate between the video and the drawing.
Firstly, run through the whole video to see how the drawing is built up over time.
Then, go through the video in a stepwise manner to see the smaller bits of drawing that you will use as the mini steps to your own drawing.
When you alternate between video and your drawing, the video will stop at the place that you left off. This will allow you to catch up to the video and then you can watch the step of the video to do your drawing.
Do this repeatedly and you can follow the video and build up your whole drawing this way.
