I’ve had this happen when I had too much air being pulled from the booth that I built in my garage. It kept happening no matter what I did until I changed up my fan setup to be positive air pressure inside the booth. Turns out I was pulling in dust through and over the panels/car to my extractor setup. Once I installed a a high static pressure fan and filter to keep positive pressure, that went away. I didn’t think that there was that much dust in my garage, let alone able to get in through the zippers and seals around the filters.

Spray booths should always be positive pressure, every booth I have used has a positive pressure to keep contaminants out.

I worked at a limousine factory years back, and some dude at the other end of the shop which was almost 200 yards away was using some silicone caulking, and the paint shop guys came screaming down to the other end of the shop asking who the F*** was using silicone!?!? That far away, and still got tons of fish eyes in the paint even though it was in a paint booth.

We had a guy start up the diesels he would work on right in front of the booth, smoke would come ripping through lol. The painter and him always yelling at each other even though it's the owners fault

Makes sense hey. If someone lit a stick of incense even briefly, everyone in that space would smell it. So easy to contaminate an entire space.

we had a cleaner who decided that the cleaning chemicals supplied to her were not good enough, so she brought her own silicone-based furniture spray polish in to clean the office. contaminated everybody who was in the offices and it migrated with them to the workshop floor causing thousands of pounds worth of damage to paint jobs in the booths (slight negative pressure) too dumb to accept the reasons that were explained to her why she should have just used the cleaning products supplied to her...

I installed one of those Eastwood filtration setups and had the same problem. Disconnected it and used a different filtering setup that was more janky but the problem went away. I’m planning on disassembling the Eastwood filter to see if I can see what’s wrong. I love their paint products, though.

Those fish eyes look like moisture. I use the 3M full face mask when clearing and I've had condensation drip from the face nose area before from breath. I also use a dedicated hose for painting that I never connect to a non filtered non dried air source. I also started using an in-line air filter on the hose at the gun, just to be sure there's no dirt or moisture coming out of the dessicant filter on the wall. I'd also spray down that floor with water using a garden chemical sprayer...

Yes, the fish eyes kept getting worse at the end, and I think the only thing that was changed was adding the intake fan halfway into the paint job. It's a brand new booth and intake fan, so I think it's burning off the mold release oil from the factory. And the fine fuzzy stuff from a brand new floor of the booth. Just a guess, but I would shut down that new intake and try to spray another test panel like the decklid on the corvette

The front of the booth is open while spraying at 10:35, air movement could have sucked all kinds of contamination in!

You gotta be kidding me! I sprayed my car with single stage today and had similar disaster. Fisheyes all over the place. But, I have plenty of paint still, so I'll try again. Thank you for honesty, seing those perfect results all the time makes me lose hope that I can do it. Your videos, just motivate me to try again and get better.

Sand your first time down using a water spray bottle and then wipe it down as you go after sanding a panel with 600. Keep the panels as you go wiped clean as you go, then tack and spray another wet finish coat over your panels to act as a final coat. The last finish coat can be a clear coat or a finish coat of color. Less time in the booth, good booth prep for cleanliness, keep the air flow down, better to have a downdraft type of booth, but the less dirt, the less stirring the things, up agitation of the things,tack and spray sand for finish in the booth, will give you a cleaner job overall. All my custom finished paint jobs were, prep, wax released, tack, spray.

Brian, I recently painted an 03 Accord and sealer, base both looked phenomenal. Then, when I laid down clear I had hundreds of fisheyes. Turns out it was my air compressor. Even though I had a wall mounted oil/water separation system there was oil or something getting in my lines. I boiled it down to being an oil driven compressor. Once I switched and got an oil-less compressor, the redo looks great. Thanks for all you do, your inspiration and the reminders that we will all have issues when painting cars.

When you added the 2nd blower right before you cleared. Is it possible it added contaminants into the booth, from whatever is sitting in that cabinet next to the blower?

Might try a little fisheye eliminator in you clear. I've use it before even just on the second coat and it allowed the clear to fill the fisheyes enough to save the job. Some of those were pretty deep. I'm sure you probably don't use anything with silicone in that garage but that would do it.

I was working at a high end custom paint shop a few years ago and the painter had to get up at like 3am to paint because it was so hot in the summer that he kept getting solvent pop on expensive builds and had to go back and redo it. These are the things that can happen and it sucks but it's a lesson in life. Always glad to see you show the reality of things.

Paint is kind of an art instead of a science. I work for an OEM, and the Paint Shop is constantly tweaking things throughout the year with the robotic spray booths based on the outside temperature and humidity changes through the year.

So glad you posted this. I've been painting for 25 years, and I STILL have problems every now and then with contamination and fisheyes. One thing you mentioned that helps is allowing the first layer to kick before spraying on a heavier 2nd and 3rd layer. Sometimes I will shoot and have a PERFECT finish, and my confidence soars. Then I'll turn right around and get fisheyed all to hell. It is frustrating! I take notes on every shoot, when things go wrong and also when they go good. It helps. But I've come to learn that there's always the possibility that you get contamination from somewhere unexpected, and you just have to bite the bullet, sand it, and reshoot!

I noticed you used static gun on inside of booth. They usually have microsopic powder on them. May I suggest wiping the car with Safeway after using static gun. Particles could gave become airborne and landed of surface before you painted.

I only see fish eyes on the horizontal areas, that upper zipper that allows air into the booth can be blowing in particles and landing in your parts altough its a fairly new garage there can still be dust from the drywall kicking around getting sucked by the blower and into the booth right into your clear

I think if you're used to a finely tuned professional setup - a perfected system of doing it - you forget the system is avoiding certain problems. When you go DIY at home you realize the struggle for good results is real.

Fish eyes. That could be being caused by a DOZEN different things! Seems to me though that if it was a contaminated panel it would have seen something in the base. That is unless something got into the air AFTER that which leads me to believe that it had something to do with your extra blower you added to keep the floor down (is it brand new?). I cannot tell you how many times I have had weird shit like that happen over the years painting professionally and for myself.

Easy test to see if you have contaminated air if to put your blowgun on and blow onto a mirror for a good 5 mins. If it fogs, or leaves an oily residue, you have your fisheyes answer. Also, tack before using the anti static gun. Rubbing the tack rag on the surface creates static! Keep the videos going brother! Subbed!

I know it sucks for you as you have to do it again, but I really do appreciate seeing how you fix these things. I've re painted a few panels using spray cans and I gave it 3 coats but I dont think each coats was thick enough. When you do a first coat, on camera it looks finished lol. Im going to do my rear wing again and put LOTS of paint on. I've sanded and buffed and made it look shiny but its not right and I know I can do it better just from watching you. @@kevinwells768 I'm American, and this is larger than 99% of the home garages I've ever seen (short of a $1M home or something). A typical 2-car garage in America will range between approx. 6x6 - 7x7 meters.

Mate I feel your pain. The same thing happened to us when we painted my son's hilux. We found that the grease and wax remover had not dried out properly in some areas nor cleaned properly. So we wiped air gently blow air across the panel. This worked perfectly

Hello Brian, I had a some of those in my paint job. Only showed up in the last coat of clear so they are not too deep. Most cleaned up in the cut and buff but there are a few that will need some attention. No one notices them unless I point them out. Generally the car looks pretty good. Since I had to re-shoot because the metallic did not lay right the first time, I think I will live with the result. It ain't perfect that's for sure. My air system consisted of two smaller air compressors with extra tankage feeding a filter separator I had sitting in a bucket of cold water outside my garage. It seemed to work ok, I drained a bunch of water out of the system after each use.

If the few bother you too much you can dab a drop of clear in the fisheye and then sand it and buff. Totally gone at that point.

I spent a year working through constant issues arising on my painted surfaces but I finally got it figured out and haven’t had any problems now for months. First up was replacing y 20 year old 80 gallon with a new one then 20 ‘ of line up and down the wall with drains then two water oil separators then then two filters all done with 1” ID pipes including filters. All of my system is grounded .

Hey Brian. Been following you for a long time and you have really helped me out in the past. But I think this came from the plastic on the spray booth walls etc. Can be release agent or powder from the manufacturing process or shipping contaminants.

I had a buddy paint my son’s car in my home garage and had a similar experience with fish eyes, although thankfully not as bad. The only thing I can point to that caused it was the Eastwood air filter. I have the exact same one that you have. I was also running another water separator before the gun. It was warm out, alround 85-87 degrees and the Eastwood filter just couldn’t keep up. I drained it and virtually nothing came out. But when I opened it, the desiccant was completely SOAKED and holding the moisture. I cleaned it out, replaced the filter and was good to go. BTW, I started with a newer filter that was clean and dry. Haven’t painted in higher temps like that since and haven’t had the issue again.

I would crater check a few things before the respray.make some 4x12 test panels.. prep panels really well clean panels really well. Spray a coat of clear on one. I would spray it with a different clear coat than used on the car.Observe panel for craters. if clean you eliminate the compressor/drier/air hose as a possible contamination source. If blown out it’s more than likely from the compressed air delivery system somewhere. spray another panel with clear and soon as coated blow air on the panel from your intake blower that u turned on late in the process and observe for craters. It would be wise to test some things before the respray.

Awesome Video! I battle issues like that all the time too! I try to do everything perfect to the tee, but a issue always comes up! I've even called in paint reps to inspect! I have even had paint reps there to watch my prep and painting! Some times its unexplainable! Thank you for making me feel its not just me!

My suggestions... the new air supply blowing near the floor brought up some dirt, or debris from inside the booth structure. Are the booth supply fans filtered?

I'm no pro, but I am in Southwest Florida. I have a trick little system. 60 Gallon 2 stage compressor. I take a 50 ft hose circular coiled up in a 30" pail. When I paint I fill the pail with ice (my chiller). Then I continue it to a Devilbiss water separator. Because its cool air, it is not steam (from the compressor) and it works well. Then I run the air line 3/8" to a Motor guard (toilet paper type) filter to remove anything that might have gotten past the water separator, plus any oils or contaminants. Finally, a Devilbiss filter at the gun. I have NEVER had a problem since I did this, even in South Florida, with 99% humidity.

Yeah his system is probably the problem the lines look good but the chiller and small compressor not good after his lines a desiccant filter and a motor guard filter would be better and more in line with a diy garage

For any home job I recommend the whirlwind air filters at the base of the gun. Compressors in a garage suck all kinds of dust and moisture in. Almost impossible to get all of it out so those gems are last line of defense.

Good honest video. I appreciate these videos. I purchased a little project hooptee and planed to respray some of the panels due to clear coat peeling. I plan to do it with spray cans because I don’t have a booth nor a big garage where it will fit with my other vehicles. I did a few touch ups after sanding, but it came out a big orange because I ran out of paint. Can I sand down the clear coat on my project and re spray base coat on the panel I recently did and primed initially?

Brian I had the exact same issue, it's the paint booth, the exhaust fan does not suck the air out effectively and if you try to use a stronger fan the booth begins to cave in

Yup had that happened to me as well I found out bye using 1k or 2k sealer before spraying works for me every time I known more products, but that seems to work for me.maybe not for everyone 😎

The usual risks you take when painting at home. I paint in a portable carport converted into a booth. Some trash is expected and the best I hope for is to bury it in the clear enough to not be visible under normal circumstances. Most of the time it works out fine with a bit of buffing. Also, it's important to use low overspray guns especially on clear.... LPH400 is the best contender for this yet.

Sorry to see your disaster guys but as you say it happens, (welcome to our world- garage spray booth). I think it's the second blower you installed to stop the floor from lifting. I might be wrong but it didn't look like it had any sort of filter system on it. Good luck with the redo, I look forward to seeing that video. 👍

Other then the fish eyes it looks good. Also, a bad batch of clear or hardener can cause fish eyes, and before you go thru the trouble of repainting it, do some test panels, use that clear and then maybe you cans get a lil bit from work, if both fish eye then there’s and issue with the spray environment, or equipment, if the East wood clear fisheyes then it’s a product issue. Also, devilbiss make a floor spray that helps with keeping dirt on the floor.

28 yrs ago spayed my restoed 68 Cougar in my 2 bay old Gulf station garage, took 2 panels out of garage door and put furnace filters in. Put a piece of plywood in rear door cut it out for a Bigass squirrel cage and wetted the floors down. Did use dedicated 1/2 line for gun and similar filter, lines ran under the floor, kept it cool. Turned out great, didn't need to buff it or... I'm guilty of over thinking things all the time but sometimes simpler can be better. It still looks great

Had a similar issue with another Vette but just the rear clip. I put it down to not having a booth of any kind. I painted it in my shop with lots of cross flow venting and continuous wetting of the floor but that car was a nightmare! I think I sanded and re-painted that clip four times over three days...what a nightmare! Love your vids' and your insights. I've gone back to your videos far more times than I care to admit, you're a great source of knowledge. Keep it up man. I'm looking forward to seeing your fix on this one and your final thoughts on your blow-up booth.

I painted a Porsche shell in my garage yesterday. No spray booth, no air warmer just a calm day, wet floor and PPG DBC base coat and Upol 2882 clear. Little orange peel but no runs, very little dirt. Sand and buff today.

That sucks dude. I know all about it. I do painting and hydrodipping and bought an inflatable booth. It works okay with exhaust and intake fans, but trying to get good paint jobs out of it. The inflatable booths are a couple time use, and then throw away has been my experience.

I think I would take another panel of something into the booth and spray it before I would redo the corvette to see if the same thing happens just to rule out all the accessories hooked up to the system. Who knows it could even be the booth itself probably not but weird things happen when your applying paint,and that’s some dollars down the tubes. Who knows it could even be something coming from the air being blown in for the exhaust.

Who was spraying silicon in front of the air intake? LOL! It's a shame because that's a beautiful blue color. I love watcking the videos but the only concern of mine is when you (or the other guys) rub their bare hands on the body and the way you remove wax and grease remover. I'm 71 and was always taught to wipe off in one direction and keep turning the towel to not contaminate the paint (replace towel after all sides are used).Maybe the new air device used to circluate the air had some type of manufactures assembly lube in. And I would just sand down 600 wet bed it and we’re ever burned blend and advise cuz I also use an inflatable booth at home use a cap full of fish eye eliminator. Or smoothie.

I had the same issue here with a single stage paint and the Eastwood compressor. Lots of fish-eyes!! I installed an oil separator and moisture separator and the situation was much improved but not perfect. I didn't think about the same hose being contaminated from using it prior to installing the oil/water separator! I bought a brand new hose (which I now use only for painting) and now I'm getting no contamination at all. Problems now are down to lack of skill and needing more practice 🙂

A very nice and informative video, I applaud the quality and detail contained! Painter noted he was using a 4 to 1 high glamor clear coat….a high solid product Noticing that the “fish eyes are on the top of flat surfaces , I would be more inclined to think that the defects are “ solvent pops” from spray clear coat to heavy. remember A flat vertical surface retains 50% more sprayed material that a vertical panel. Using similar product in our both, we must spray a 4-1-1.5 reduced mixture of clear and a 50 to 75% wet initial clear coat, allow to dry to a light touch, than apply gloss coats. This allows solvents to vapor out before being captured by a surface skin coat, only to be released by the following wetter coats allowing trapped solvent to migrate up and out leaving the crater.

for the peeps at home. Do the ole moonshine trick with the air hose. Grab a 5 gallon bucket, fill it with ice water. coil your airhose in that bucket. Wham, air line refrigerator/condenser on the cheap.

Back in the day, I used to work at an automotive collision shop. We started the day buffing out small lacquer, repair jobs. Then it’s coffee break time, do some masking on other jobs that need primer coats. As the day goes on, you finally get into doing some more spot painting like hoods fenders doors you name it. Most of it is fast drying acrylic, lacquer. One job I’ll never forget it’s a deep red Cadillac that hit a deer so a new hood fender and blending into a door. The primer went on. No problem sanding no problem back then we mostly took it to 360. I mixed up the paint from Dupont , the proper color code, and put the first and second coat on. By the second coat, I was sure I was seeing some Fisheyes. Oh S##T!!! I remember masking off the windshield and windshield post and a few other items, and I was having trouble with the 3M masking tape sticking. I tried rubbing it with prepsol but still had lots of trouble. I called my head painter over to look to see what he thought and he said G Neal that’s too bad. Just add another really wet thick coat and see what happens. I wound up painting that vehicle another three times! This was about a year and a half or so after armoral hit the store shelves! Load it up and sand it down.

I’ve had this issue with 4:1 glamour clear many times. I’ve discovered that if I let the base dry overnight it eliminates almost all solvent pop and fish eye issues

I had that exact same thing happen to me on a home spray job once the clear started going down. It was the air supply. I had cooling loops, I had the dryer, all of that.... The humidity in the garage, especially moisture coming through the concrete floor, overpowered all the mitigation efforts right at the end of the spray job. For the second go at it, I cracked open all of the drain valves in the cooling loops to make a small leak. Those areas of low pressure condensed any trapped water in the air. I added another desiccant canister. That fixed the issue.

If this happened to me I'd be pretty upset. I'm very impressed with Brian's positive attitude no matter what - leaves no doubt it'll be done right in the end! I just finished painting my first panel (a C4 targa top) this week thanks to being encouraged from watching Brian's other videos and I'm now a big fan!

I always heated my paint good and hot and put sm. nuts in the tub to keep the paint mixed and spray very light coats of metallic in a cross pattern so everything lays out better.

I really enjoy your video with many tips and cons and this one is no different. What really sucks is that you might have to sand down and start over again unless you try what another great painter, GN, Garage Noise wrote. Try using Eastwood Fish Eye Eliminator as keeping it in the same family paint and see if it helps. Also, as I watched your C5 paint project video, is it possible when added the second blower fan some containment was introduce?
