I rewatched the comparison Tucktec vs Pakayak video and I thought, hang on, it's been 8 months since I got the Pakayak so why don't I share my thoughts and make a review of the Pakayak Bluefin 142 after 8 months of use!
My previous video included size, storage, price, set up, conditions, etc however this video will share weight, comfort and performance.
Chapters here:
00:00 Intro - 8 months review of the Pakayak
00:39 Weight - Pakayak weight issues
01:50 Comfort - How comfortable is the Pakayak?
03:06 Performance - How does the Pakayak perform?
05:43 Final Thoughts
I do feel that my expectations of the Pakayak were different back then but not for the worse.. it's just different. Maybe it's through experience that I realised what I should and shouldn't expect.
Hope you enjoy this video!

Received mine on Monday and I have installed the braces, I have practiced putting it together and taking apart and packing, I also labelled each of the 6 section, I have 2024 which is 49 lbs, 22.2kg. I bought it as I wanted touring kayak that was portable as I don’t have storage space for full size touring kayak.

I find it really stresses the latches by carrying it completely assembled. I almost always carry the fore and aft sections in two trips right to the waters edge and clamp together there. Thanks so much for your videos, they've been really helpful for me. I agree with other comments regarding open water self rescue, a good paddle float is a must. Thanks again!

I loved the idea of the inflatable kayak (as seen in picture) due to it comes in a bag and can go in a car easy, I use it to surf waves included and at sea in Maine sometimes. I challenge it haha. Anyway, I would say that if the shore is not near car. Wheel the bag right to the spot, put it together and then leave the bag in the car. That’s the optimal way to carry it around. When you come back, you go get bag out of car and take it apart and travel again.

Such an awesome review!! I totally agree with all points mentioned - especially the secondary stability. The primary stability feels pretty solid but I haven’t intentionally tested the secondary stability too much because to be honest, I didn’t want to take a swim, lol! The weight can be a workout especially when going up stairs (as in 3 flights of stairs, 🙄 lol), but to me it’s worth it to be able to pack it up in my car. Since I went from the Advanced Elements inflatable kayak (which I still enjoy for relaxed easy paddles or when camping), the upgrade to the larger hardshell was totally worth it for longer distance paddles. And the performance keeps up with other sea kayaks in my group without struggle. Also, big congrats to you on successfully rolling!! 🙌😄 Love your videos - your visuals are always stunning! I hope to share some kayak & camp videos soon as well.

Thank you! Oh I can’t imagine taking the Pakayak three flights up.. it must be quite a challenge. I once took it up a long flight of stairs and then had to rest quite a while before moving on 😂 but definitely agree that it’s all worthwhile.. just being on the water is worth it. I look forward to your kayak and camping videos!

Another excellent video! I concur with your opinions and conclusions. One additional aspect; I have paddled a 15' Necky Kyook, which is considered a good touring yak (for a roto-molded HPDE unit) for years. It weighed 60 lbs and was too long to roof rack when towing my camper. My Pakayak is just as fast, transports in the back of the SUV, and doesn't take up so much space in the garage.

Great to know you share the same thoughts! It's really a game changer now how we can now pack our kayaks in our trunks. If anyone told me that there would be modular/folding kayaks 20 years ago, I'd say they were crazy. So fortunate to have a kayak like the Pakayak so we can go touring!

Good review, your skills are developing well, it took me years before i had a reliable roll. Yes outfitting with extra padding makes all the difference. I suspect you have more storage space than you realise behind the seat, provided you use a drybag for your gear. No kayak is perfect, the best one is the boat you are siting in today.

Another way to transport your pakayak to the water is to make two trips and carry it in halves (30 pounds each). I am a small female without a cart who often kayaks alone. The pakayak has become my preferred kayak over my smaller, lighter female-oriented Perception kayak of less than 40 pounds. I actually row faster in the pakayak than my other yak and it's more comfortable on long day paddles. I'm over 50 years old and so far, no one has passed me :-) I've never tipped over in this boat, although every male who has borrowed it has :-) I must be lower to the center of gravity at 5 feet 4 inches. I have not tried rolling in it- but I should. I find I do not need thigh braces even though I am very small. I am comfortable using my hips for balance.
@Fishaholicboy

That’s an excellent point transporting it in half.. I actually do that quite often too but failed to mention it in the video! I’m really happy you paddle with the Pakayak. It’s funny how the guys all flipped.. coincidence or not? 😅 you should try rolling and would love to hear your experience. I recently bought some EVA foam to put my seat an inch higher so I can almost do a back deck roll.. well, I have to try it :) really appreciate your comment!

I should add that another reason I like just carrying and loading thirds or halves of this kayak instead of stacking back into the case when I'm done is that its faster, and I can let the kayak air dry in my car if it's wet. Its difficult to thoroughly remove water from all the crevices after stacking the 6 parts upright. I've had a little bit of rust on my latches from the one time I forgot to unpack the boat when I got home. Probably because I'd just finished a long day flying with it! I coated the latches with WD 40 after that and always unpack it once I'm home to thoroughly dry overnight. If the shore or boat launch is crowded when I end a day, I quickly load up my car in thirds or halves, skip the roller case, and get outta there. I expose less of the gaskets to dirt and sand. I use two towels and somehow still get sand, dirt or mud on the edges when I load up the yak into the sak.

I opted to get the Point 65 Mercury GTX segmented kayak. I like it well enough, but even though it is segmented, it still takes up a lot of room, especially compared to the Pakayak. They Pakayak is about $400 more, but if I had it to do over again, I might choose the Pakayak just because it has a smaller storage footprint. I might eventually end up getting it anyway. :)~ Also, a good option for transporting your Pakayak from your car to the water solo is the RAILBLAZA C-Tug Kayak and Canoe Trolley Cart. It is supposed to be able to easily disassemble and be stored in one of your kayak's bulkheads.

Great video again. :) One drawback regarding Pakayak: if you capsize and fall out of the cockpit, cowboy re-entry is difficult on flat water, and even harder on choppy water. Also the cockpit gets swamped when you capsize and getting rid of that water is not an easy task, even less so in choppy water. So safety wise if you go sea-kayaking with a Pakayak it's definitely best to have someone tag along, especially if you go far from the shore.
@Fishaholicboy
@Fishaholicboy 2 жыл бұрын
Some very good points! I couldn't do the cowboy re-entry unless I used a paddle float.. but then again, I only practiced this rescue on the Pakayak and not any other kayaks so I can't really compare.
@rubeus90
@rubeus90 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, could you elaborate on why cowboy re-entry is difficult with the Pakayak ? I'm looking to sell my Oru to switch to something else because it's too difficult to self rescue in the Oru, I had hoped that the Pakayak would be better in this regard
@yt.damian
@yt.damian Жыл бұрын
@@rubeus90 the higher volume cockpit means you are higher which means the centre of gravity is higher when on top so balance is more difficult. Use the paddle float. Small paddlers would have an easier time as they dont raise the centre of gravity as much and can get into the cockpit quicker.

Great 8 month review! I have seen a few of your videos on this boat and they are all informative and entertaining, good work, keep them coming. A small comment on the price, I live in Canada and I can get this for 2600.00 CAD and while it is expensive, any other hard shell touring Kayak would cost me between 1500.00 and 3000.00 anyway. Then there is the issue of transporting, I would need a good rack, something I would feel secure with, that is another 1000.00 easy (Thule) so add that to the cost. Then there is the traveling with it, parked over night at a hotel for example, I would be worried all the time with my 2000.00 Kayak strapped to the roof of my car, is it safe from theft? I can roll the Pakayak into my hotel room, or leave it locked up inside the car. Lastly, storage, I don't have the storage space for a 14 foot Kayak so for me, I can throw it in my closet and then in my car for a day of paddling, great! I though of inflatables, was looking at the Sea Eagle 393rl and while it is a nice boat with more than enough capacity for storing all my camping gear, there is the problem of mold which is always there with an inflatable, not so with the Pakayak. As for the Oru, no thank you, far too many issues and way too long to setup. I just think when you look at all the benefits of the Pakayak and compare the pros and cons, it is still a good value. One more comment, I have heard a lot of people talk about leaking and buckles rusting in salt water. That was true on the original version, the Pakayak 14. With the new version, the 142, they have eliminated those issues, the buckles are now stainless steel, the seels are marine grade silicon and even the manufacturing process is improved. It is an amazing boat, I will be picking one up next season and I can't wait. I have been looking at portable kayaks for over a year now and have investigated many of them, gone on forums and asked questions, as far as I am concerned, this is the best bang for the buck.

Hi.. from what I am aware of, all spray skirts will have some level of water seeping in. In saying that, the one that Pakayak sells is the Nylon one which is great for just paddling around, however not the best if you’re trying to roll. I had leaks after 1-2 rolls and it also came off a few times. I just purchased a neoprene one from SEALS (they also make the Pakayak spray skirts size 2.2). I don’t have that much comparison but I felt the Pakayak was quite easy for me to re-entry. The cockpit is large it’s easy to get on. @Fishaholicboy 2 жыл бұрын
I actually have no issues but again it depends on the weather conditions you’re paddling in as well as ones paddling technique. I didn’t get the rudder as it’s self installation and I’m hopeless with my hands 😂 also, I find that maintenance could be an issue. I use my paddle to manage the kayak and I find it easier to manage with Greenland paddles as you can extend one side longer just by holding the paddle different.

The red paddle at 2:24 is the Gearlab Akiak Greenland Paddle. I made a video here about that paddle: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ettjoJR8u8mygGg.html

Is it possible to go fishing on this? It looks like the answer is no based on the tight cockpit.

I wouldn’t use the Pakayak for fishing. There’s not much space and you would want stability for fishing. Depending on the condition you fish, the Tucktec has plenty of room to hold your gear. I used it for fishing before and it was very good

@@Fishaholicboy fantastic thank you very much! I actually have a Tucktec on order and this confirms what I suspected. Really like your videos. Subscribed.
