This symphony never fails to send shivers down my spine. This is the type of music that makes men into gods. Mahler is not dead. He is immortal. His music will last forever, while men still have emotions.

There is no first exprience for Mahler's music. You can experience them as many times and it will be always as epic as the first time.

On first hearing this symphony it changed my life and since then 20 yrs ago I still hold fascination with Mahler. His music articulates what is inside of all of us - we hear, we understand it's about everything in Life.

I was privileged to work with Abbado for several years. This video reminds me just how great a conductor he was and is and always will be to those fortunate enough to experience his performances. His control, his passion, his sympathy, his amazing memory can never surely be surpassed.

I too enjoyed working with Abbado... until he tried to throw a chalkboard eraser at me during rehearsal and nearly decapitated a second violinist. PS: I deserved it.

I can see why you were so impressed with the Maestro Abbado. He conducted this portion of Mahler exquisitely. The pianissmo segments with the choir and orchestra are portrayed so perfectly... so that the beauty of the chords could manifest... NEVER rushed. BRAVISSIMO !

After listening to 200+ CDs on Mahler, I'd like to say Claudio Abbado's recordings in Lucerne are among my top. The exuberant energy, cool mind (never too hysterical) and subtlety he was trying to convey make these Mahler pieces even suitable for morning music. But, on the other side, this maneuvering also makes these pieces especially deep and moving (painful in Mahler's sense), because it makes it easier for people to feel the "emptiness" and "helpless repetition" or "tragedy" in human life.

My favored is Mahler #2 s. Because of this, and because of the generous up-loaders, a great selection available to us of this great work, I have listened to all of them. Of course it is always a personal preference and impossible to say that this or that performance is the best. However, if Mahler would be alive, I am absolutely sure, he would prefer Abbado and this magnificent orchestra. Touches me to tears every time I play it from my DVD of this same performance.

Actually Bruno Walter's various interpretations are generally much better. Several of them are the standards. Of course, that is clear as Bruno Walter worked very closely with Mahler and knew what the Maestro wanted to express. Walter has always expressed it! Walter was also the one who really "popularized" Mahler's music. This is, however, a good interpretation if a bit slow.

I cut what very few classical music teeth I have on the complete 9 symphonies of Mahler with Leonard Bernstein on vinyl in the late 60's/early 70s. Abbado is equally magnificent.. I've always said that if St Peter meets me at the Pearly Gates after I die and says he'll take me to meet god, I'd say, "OK, but could I first meet Mahler and Bernstein. God will still be there". ;-)

First time I was introduce Mahler is when I was coming home from work in mt car from Clifton, NJ, The draw again was stuck while it was drawn. we were stck for uver a hour. I had a FM converter. WQXR was paling Mahler's Third symphony, a new release with leonard Bernstein. I began a fan. Right after that a few days later I heard Bruno Walters, Mahler's symphony No.1. I was sold, this man was a twentieth century Genius.

Well, I wouldn't say "beats" -- that is a kind of crass way to put it. But Abbado understands Mahler like very few others. and I would agree that no one else besides Bernstein has ever pulled this kind of numinous quality out of the work at its ending. It won't make any sense unless it makes sense, but Abbado seems to be able to transduce musical sonorities into light. This is a glorious reading.

If you any SEMBLANCE of a soul.... and I don't care if you choose to call your higher power THE UNIVERSE... HOW can you not listen to this, as a classically trained musician... and NOT feel a spiritual connection of SOME sort. Unless YOU choose to 'play God.' This, through art exemplifies the fact that we are but children of the universe.... Who as decent , loving and caring human beings cannot be moved to tears by this genius????
