I got to have a play with a bunch of GFX 100S II cameras at the X-Summit in Sydney when they launched and I 100% agree with your review. I took my partner along for company - he’s a Nikon guy and had no intention of changing - but he fell in love with the new GFX and has decided to sell off his D850 and Pentax 67 setup to raise money to buy one. They had 5 Australian photographers there showing us how they’d been using the new camera and Matt Krumins demonstrated how to hold the camera so we could take a perfect focus photo with the 500mm lens at 1/10sec.

Great review, as always, thanks, I appreciate it. This camera is obviously amazing. So tempting. Now, to me, this means more weight, size, cloud and storage, new lenses, a new computer, in other words a lot of that green stuff that's become so hard to get through photography nowadays, at least for photigraphers like me. Besides I'm still in love with my X-Pro3, X-T3 and X100V. Anyway I'll definitely test it out and I can't wait for your next videos

Thanks for a great review. I've been a Nikon shooter most of my years (shooting full frame digital now) but had a Mamiya 645 years ago, and I've been feeling the medium format pull lately. Financially, an old film 645 would be much easier to get, of course, but your review and a few others are making me think it might be time for a dive into digital medium format.

I recently bought a refurbished GFX 100 from a dealer. The price was very, very good and tempted me to try out medium format. At the same time I bought a GF 35-70 which is the “bargain price” every day zoom. What a combination! On a recent trip to Edinburgh I took a shot from the roof of the Museum of Scotland towards Holyrood Palace (a distance of about 0.75 mile) at 35mm. Bringing the shot up later on my computer I noticed a tiny red dot in the grounds of the Palace. Zooming in I discovered that the red dot was in fact an ice cream van . I could easily read the writing on the van’s signs such was the camera/lens phenomenal resolution! If the GFX 100 SII has an improved sensor then it must be something very special indeed.

The best thing about GFX cameras which I enjoy so much is the possibility to use EF mount lenses. They are made for fullframe but many of them do easily cover the 44x33 area. I love Sigmas 40/1.4 and 105/1.4 on GFX same as Canon 300/2.8. Results are stunningly excellent.

I currently own the 50s ii which is amazing but Im saving hard and will sell off my nikon D850 gear I entered the GFX space about six months ago and I started with the base camera because I really wasn't sure whether I was gonna stick with GFX or not but oh my gosh it's an amazing camera system and yes it's expensive but the image quality is simply amazing. The problem with many GFX cameras though is the auto focus is not really suited for fast moving subjects but this camera looks to have improved in that. I'm definitely going to get this camera after I sell off my Nikon gear as my 850 gear is just sitting collecting dust. I love my GFX Cameron now and it is just such a beautiful system to use. The image quality is second to none. I was really torn with Nikon I live in Australia and cameras are generally pretty expensive here and I couldn't decide between the Nikon Z8 and GFX now the NikonZ8 is amazing for auto focus and a whole bunch of things but I just didn't feel it was a big jump from the D850... But wow, the image quality from the GFX 50 S2 was a huge jump from the Nikon D50. I could see it in the files and the colours and everything so I'm really happy to be continuing forward with this camera when it's released. I didn't want to purchase the GFX 100 ii as that was just too much in money but this will come at a nice sweet spot in terms of price. It will still be $8000 in Australia but that's what cameras cost here.

As from the GFX100 and GFX100s onwards this line all has phase detect autofocus, which is adequate but feels 1 generation behind on full-frame. The GFX50S, which came out at around the same time, still had contrast detect autofocus, which leaves to be desired.

X-H2 and X-T5 won't differ much, though to some folks X-H2 is more nicely weight-balanced and stable in the hand. If you actually want to focus on low light situations, you may notice a nice jump in quality when switching to larger sensors, though. I noticed GFX performing really darn well in low light scenarios, but that does come at a price (and, if you want autofocus lenses, a pretty huge price at that).

@Hugmir

Even using an old Helios 58mm on this thing lets you have way more creative fun, letting you see way more of what the lens can actually show you. Dynamic range this thing has definitely enough of. Fast lenses become even more magical when adapted to this machine. Speed and autofocus.... yeah, this is not the right address if you prioritize these. From the usual default GF Fuji lenses with AF, though, assuming for a moment your question wasn't overly cynical - people usually like the 110mm F2 quite a bit.

@@olahaldor Sigh Pixel peeping isn't really photography. A majority of the greatest photos ever taken over the last hundred years or so years were with film - which is very far from having great 'resolution.' Resolution is vastly over-rated when it comes to taking great photos. Sure, gear can be fun but it's not nearly as important to the picture taking process as people think it is.
@olahaldor
@olahaldor Ай бұрын
@@Mamo878 I'm not talking about pixel peeping. I made a test shot from a random location and I was STUNNED to see the rich and crisp image. I shot with the GF 110mm, and things 200m away was perfectly sharp and in great detail. The shot opens for so many opportunities for cropping and framing the shot different because of the resolution. I've never been into pixel peeping, but I do enjoy seeing my photos at 100% on screen, or on print. :)

*sigh* it is NOT a newly developed sensor. It is the same IMX461, unless Fuji have their own fabs or are spinning up something custom from Sony for their bargain camera... Which is so far outside the realm of possibility it doesn't merit consideration. Fuji are lying, youtubers are spreading the misinformation. The only difference to the sensor is the firmware controlling it is allowing access to another one of the pre-existing readout modes and doing black point subtraction in the fake ISO 80 mode.

I think pro's buy Hasselblad for their leaf shutter lenses, and unique ergonomics and interface. Hasselblad lenses are really expensive though compared to Fuji GF glass, and Fuji develops their GF line more active. The 102 megapixel sensor in the GFX100-line is really insanely good, and you can tweak colour to anything you like. So while Hasselblad may have the name for having nice skin colours out of camera, Fuji is not far behind and you have so much latitude for editing in these 16-bit raw files that I am certain you can make them look indistinguishable from each other, or could even create an exactly matching colour profile.

With all 20 flim simulations , and can shoot 14 to 15 frames per second ! And not have that stupid PASM dial ! Oh yes , it must have in camera stabilization and articulating screen ! Wishful thinking 😢 If any camera manufacturer could produce such a camera . It would be our beloved Fujifilm !!!

I believe the 100mp cameras from Fuji have 50mp modes on them? I’d rather have more resolution with the option to save lower res files than a lower res sensor with no option to go higher res. I do agree that 100 is def too big for 90% of situations, there’s a reason why average megapixel counts haven’t really increased that much over the past 15 years, tons of cameras have been 16-24mp for well over a decade because it’s a pretty good balance of resolution and convenience in terms of file size and speed. Nikon is still putting out full frame 24mp cameras. I think cameras that are over 40 or so megapixel should include the option to save downsampled raws/jpegs.

@@KdkjdjewerdnxaSadly, the 102mp Fuji models don’t allow for lower-resolution raw files like a 51mp as far as I know. If so, then this would be new feature.

@@runcmd1419 This is news to me, thanks. Can you point me to a source? I’d love to know more about this feature. If true, the I’m sure you would lose the 16-bit colour mode.

@@doogieham it isn’t a low res mode, just what i think an optimal sensor would be for me.

I love the GFX lineup as an ecosystem, and the GFX 100 II seems better as my dream camera for video, but the GFX lenses are way too costly and limited.. would love your insights about affordable lens solutions for GFX line 🥲

I think the GFX line-up is not the best choice if video is your primary focus. The sensor speed is not there, the autofocus feels a generation older compared to full-frame, and the lenses are all intended for photography, where only few have linear motors and even new releases have stepper motors (such as the 55mm and 80mm f1.7, and the 20-35mm f4). These are really photography-first cameras. For that they are among the best if you use them to their strength (slow paced photography). When you buy an USD 8,000 GFX 100 II, I don't think the lenses are that expensive, if you consider the size of the glass elements in them. The price is almost comparable to Sony GM-glass and Canon RF-glass, which often contains less glass. Hasselblad glass is twice the price with the leaf shutters in them. For the GF, there are only a few native Mikaton and TTArtisna lenses. And you can adapt some manual M-mount and Contax and Mamiya glass (the Mamiya 80mm f1.9 and 110mm f2.8 are great for video). For video, I think you would enjoy full-frame more. I shoot GFX 100s for photo and Sony FX3 and A7S3 for video.
