This just made my life a whole lot easier. Using the AF On button to hold focus is a game changer. Now I dont have to use the little analog stick to change where my single point focus square is. I can just get my target in the middle of the frame, his AF On and then position the object where I want it to be in the frame before taking my shot. This saves a lot of time. Thank You

Great tip! But I would recommend not switching AF-S shutter focus off, but instead just let the camera live in manual focus all the time and focus with the back button. That way you have both options at your fingertips: if you need the shutter to focus, you just toggle the focus switch from M to S. Particularly handy in situations where you need to give the camera to someone else to take a picture and everything needs to be as automatic as possible.

Sorry to ask this but I am newbie and AF-S focus off? Are you talking about the Focus Mode Selector or a menu setting could you explain a little more in simpler terms as I am struggling getting to grips with this tip? I have zoom focus issue appearing all the time when selector is in M setting ie the little sub focus area in the main screen
@remco2777
@remco2777 3 жыл бұрын
@@nigelblanchard5571 I am talking about the menu setting. In the video Chris suggests to go into the menu and switch your shutter focus off for AF-S. That way your shutter stops focussing when you half press it. On the back of the camera there is an AF-ON button. That AF-ON will auto-focus, even if the camera is in manual mode with the switch on the front of the camera. Chris points this out in the video too. Often people refer to this method of focussing as "back-button focussing". My suggestion is not to follow Chris' suggestion for switching the shutter focus for AF-S off in the menu, because then the shutter focussing behaves the same when the focus switch is set to M as set to S. If you don't switch shutter focus off in the menu then your camera will still focus when half-pressing the shutter if in S, but not do this when you are in M. Your zoom focus sub area will not appear if you press your AF-ON button when the selector is in M. It only appears when you change the focus using the zoom ring on your lens.

Best video dedicated to focus on a Fuji and explaining the back button focus. Straight to the point. Decoupling the shutter button from the AF half press is a good idea when using AF lenses that don't have a clutch focus ring (or AF MF switch). When using a fully manual lens or a clutch one, and if the SMC selector is on M the half press just doesn't work and it's a good point. Also for the back button to take over when manually focusing on an AF lens (with or without clutch) I think the AF+MF setting must be ON. I wish Fuji makes a separate AFL AEL back button on the next X-PRO4.

Great video as always Chris!!! I've been using AF-ON + disable shutter autofocus for more than a year and I love that configuration. I use Fn2 (front button controlled by my middle finger) for AF-ON because I have a thumb grip on my XT4 and I like to keep my thumb on it for a more stable grip. Another benefit of this setup is that I give my middle finger an honest job 😉.

Actually, after I've had my Fuji on backbutton-focus for a while when in AF-S, I realised some time ago that putting it in manual focus is a much better option to get backbutton-focus! Because as you have shown, you still get all the benefits of back-button AF when in MF, and you get the extra benefit of having focus-peaking. So the MF mode already works like having back-button focus, and better (because you don't get focus-peaking when in AF-S mode).

As always great video. Back button focus has been something I've always avoided with no real reason as to why. As I'm ignorant to the process what would the benefit be to using back button versus holding down the shutter button and recomposing? I'm struggling to understand the application where back button focus would be ideal?

I’ve got the AF-L set to AF-On because I think you mentioned previously; the advantage of this over how it works on Other cameras is you can have both; half-press to focus like normal, or by switching the front to Manual, you have full back-button focusing. So no need to switch half-press focusing off, you just turn the front switch to Manual. Best of both worlds.

Thank you for posting this video! I just switched over to Fuji from Canon and the one area I’m having a tough time figuring out is the auto focus. On my Canon, if I pointed my camera at any scene on auto focus and half pressed the shutter it would guess and auto focus at a certain single point of the scene. If I didn’t want that point to be the focus I could just tap the screen to readjust to a different point. I understand you can move the focus point and tap to adjust on Fuji, but I am having a hard time figuring out on single point focus how to get it to “guess” where the auto focus should be first. If I am on autofocus I would think I should be able to aim my camera at a baseball bat, and it auto select to focus at the tip of the bat, but if I wanted it to instead focus on the handle, I should be able to tap the handle to refocus there. The only mode that seems to guess the focus is Wide on Fuji, but I can’t then tap on a specific part of the scene to focus on that instead. Could you please explain how to achieve that? It seems fairly simple to me but written out sounds a lot more complicated! Thanks for all your help!

I become an X-S10 user and am trying to familiar with the operations for my use but the camera setting is bit complicated than other brands. Therefore, your video helps me a lot. One strange concept is "AUTO" position. Even it is auto, the focus setting remains what I used by other position. I believe focus behavior must be also AUTO decided by camera. Another complaint is that the click of ISO(400,500,640,800), Apeture(4.0,4.5,5.0,5.6) and Speed (400,500,640,800) 1/3 EV and no choice to change 1/2EV or 1/3EV respectively. As I normally use M mode+Auto ISO, I have to turn dials much.

I’ve read that by using back button focus while the camera is in manual focus mode, the camera will auto focus with the lens wide open. This provides shallow depth of field for focusing so is more accurate. When you release the shutter, the lens will stop down to the correct exposure while maintaining accurate focus.

For my own needs I prefer to keep the shutter button as AF-ON while in AF-C mode. As the mode is only really used when tracking (potentially fast) moving objects I always find the fewer buttons you need to worry about the better - having everything at your index finger is much handier. Totally agree with the MF/BBF combination however, this is what I use 90% of the time.
