I've been listening to these two songs since 1996 and they're still just as perfect now. He still plays these two songs live too, and every time I hear them they are re-imagined and fresh. Honestly, listen to live versions from 2005 or 2009! His songs grow old and mature with him. You can't beat that.

Reminds me of the time around when my first love left me. It was summer, and every beautiful view I saw rang with the crushing knowledge that I was seeing it without him. Every sunset, every waterfall, every shaking leaf, was about him. It is a devastating feeling, and I had forgotten it until I heard West Palm Beach again tonight.

Thats beautiful and interesting, because these songs always seem to tell a story about taking somebody on a vacation to help them get over some heartbreak

west palm beach is as close to perfection as i know

The emotional devastation brought about when his voice cracks as he sings “I could see it in his shoes he was born to lose he was BORN for me” is unparalleled in American Pop. The only song that could possibly come close to that peak emotion would be some other song Will Oldham wrote.

I grew up spending summers in St Augstine, New Smyrna Beach (South of Daytona) and on the Gulf (the FL Panhandle and spent a few weeks in Bay St Louis, Mississippi). I once had this 7". Having seen what he saw... Nothing "photographs" those places any better than this document.

Whatever he calls himself Will Oldham is a treasure. This is the very best of the best

Have you heard Bonnie "Prince" Billy's "Sings Greatest Palace Music" album? It's about as close as he's come to an album in this style, and one of my all-time favorites.
@eggsyntax7 жыл бұрын
(Depending on what you mean by "in this style", of course -- in other ways it's utterly different from this)

A friend gave me a mix tape in '96 with this on it before I went to Egypt. Took it to the pyramids and the red sea coast. never looked back.

Saw him play live in around 96 or 97. Was an incredible show, in a small bar. The songs felt like they were coming into being on the spot

I Was fortunate enough to catch Palace in Tempe AZ, this was my first introduction to them and also where I purchased the Gulfshore/West Palm Beach 7". Brilliant song writing and lyrics.

There are all kinds of Will Oldhams, but never the same Will Oldham twice. Dig the charming commentary, which chimes with the sadly mellow music: youth and its loss and an increasing consciousness of both.

The one I had of this was Palace Mountain cd, loved the cover of it, these songs seem timeless, this was such a great thing to hear in 1995 for me. It had Jason from Sebadoh and Doug Easley on slide guitar. Recorded by Albini.

Everyone should read jack carneal's book, pretty amazing hearing how these recordings came together
@BadHandBand3 жыл бұрын
I'll second that. I'm reading it now, I'm at the part where the band is listening back to these one-take recordings. Songs they'd never played before, recorded in one take.

@germ I mean the one where he converses at great length with Will. Sorry, can't remember the name of it, but it's full of stuff I didn't know. Such as Royal Trux producing a number of the classic early singles and Joya being a reference to the Minutemen's Joy. It also stops when his music became dull (to my mind). Not liked an LP since Ease Down the Road although the concert he did for Beware was as good as any of the, I dunno, dozen times I've seen him.

...did you get that ?...... "The two songs KRAMER {Shimmy-Disc} produced for Palace Music’s West Palm Beach 7" in 1994 are some of his best known works (the other being his production on Urge Overkill’s version of “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon”, which wound up on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack)" ! cheers, Greg
