Pale Fox supervising Chris to make sure he gets to and from the water bowl without straying

Dan and I went away on vacation for a week in late June this year and our friend Chris moved in to look after the critters for us while we were gone. Chris is a good guy, obviously. The critters like him and so do we.
One morning when Chris went to put fresh water in the bowl by the big live oak, Pale Fox followed him all the way down the trail, and then he turned around and followed him all the way back to the house, trotting along behind and supervising from a respectful distance.
Pale Fox is a friendly creature, but we've never seen behavior like this before. We think he's in love.
When we got home, Pale Fox was waiting for us on a stump by the firepit. We greeted him and told him we'd missed him while we were away. He raised an eyebrow and said "Yeah, nice to see you guys, too. Where's the tall dude?".

I love how it didn't bother Chris at all that Pale Face was supervising. PF is so sweet. Thank you Dan & Jane for the wonderful clip. Chris should be proud that PF trusts him

It was fun to see, wasn't it? Little Pale Fox trotting calmly along after Chris, just making sure he got all the way to the water bowl and back without getting lost.

Everybody should have a fathful dog like Pale Fox and a good friend like Chris. I meant "faithful"! Sorry, I should think before I speak! It is good to know that at least in this small corner of the world everyone gets along with each other. After watching this many times, it never ceases to put a smile on my grumpy face. Ironic: Chris used to be a movie producer, and now he is a star on the other side of the cameras!

This is very funny and sweet. You go to France, I'll look after the house, all the animals and I'll keep a special eye on Chris.

That's exactly the deal, Marion. We thought Chris was in charge; Pale Fox knew that actually, he was the boss, and he was behaving accordingly.

I made friends with a bunny last year during the drought and her mate has finally started trusting me more this year. Well, he challenged me a few times...stomped the ground and made a weird noise. I let the female eat from my garden during the drought last year so guess where she put her nest in June? She knew I wouldn`t be mean to baby bunnies so I lost half my peas and melon vines to the little gang of nibblers. I was watering and noticed what looked like huge rats scurrying everywhere, looked closer, and there were 5 inch long bunnies all over the place. But when I mowed around the edge of the garden mama bunny evacuated the babies to a safer blackberry patch. Ha!

That's a great story! We see bunnies quite often but we've never been able to make friends with them. You are a kind person to let them eat your peas and melons.

@@TexasBackyardWildlife There was a bad disease about 7 years ago that decimated the rabbit population so I wanted the survivors to feel safe here to repopulate the area. These two and their young are the only ones I`ve seen. The female trusts me and comes up to me and sometimes comes when called. I leave a bowl of water out for her and plant Red Ripper peas everywhere for them to eat. She doesn`t eat much from my garden this year but her babies did.

Like any self-respecting gentleman, Pale Face takes his drinking _very_ seriously and doesn't want it ruined by some amateur, so he has to inspect Chris with great vigilance! I think? 🤭 Edit: so many typos for such a simple sentence. I'm an idiot...

this is incredible!! the closest I've ever been to a fox was when I was walking on my deck and accidentally interrupted a mother fox that was sleeping on the forest floor a few feet below. How did Chris get the fox to trust him, or did the fox just decide to join him one day because he was bringing water?

I put a bit more information in the text field, Marina, but we think that Pale Fox just really liked Chris and decided to follow him to see what he was up to. There are water bowls all over the place, so PF definitely wasn't following because he was thirsty. We think he was mainly just being companionable - from a safe distance. We've since found another few clips showing PF keeping an eye on another friend who took on water-bowl duty for us while we were away. The videos show Mike trudging up the trail and as he passed, PF hopped up onto the branch you can see on the right of the view. He watched Mike disappear around the corner, and then jumped down and followed him. Very, very funny. "Hmmm. Another new guy. Better keep an eye on him."

Great!! We can always use more help. We just found another clip of Pale Fox keeping an eye on a different friend as he delivered clean water to the water bowl. The friend (Mike) had no idea he was being observed. PF hopped up on a fallen branch by the trail and watched Mike as he went by. "Hmmm. Who is this dude? Seems OK, though."
