Welcome to Dinosaurs: Monsters or Animals
This video analyzes media depicting prehistoric animals and discusses potential negative effects and their significance - as well as provide methods for how extinct animal portrayal should be addressed. From King Kong, The Valley of Gwangi, Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, and Prehistoric Planet, we will take a deep dive into what makes dinosaurs so popular and the changes they have went through in popular culture.

Dinosaurs were a little bit of both. They behaved just like animals today, they looked for food, they sought mates, some were social and lived in groups, and maintained territories. However in those instances where they are hunting, maintaining territories, and competing for mates they can turn into monsters. This is reserved for your really big animals.

Honestly, it really shouldn't be a competition. Both in their way have their own pros and cons and can be good. Yes, there should be more accurate films/shows of dinosaurs to help give people a better understanding and help balance things out. That being said, the inaccurate and monstrous, really shouldn't go. A lot of people by now what an accurate dinosaurs may have looked like and what it hasn't but still enjoy the portrayals of the movie versions. I personally just like their more reptilian looks. I don't think it's really right to have those versions completely go away. As for the public view and their monstrous behavior, well look at lions. We have films and movies such as the lion king, the wizard of oz and kimba the white lion that show lions in a heroic role, then we have films like the ghost and the darkness, prey (2007) and the recent film beast where the lions are pretty much nightmare fuel. Same case with wolves, we have films where wolves are the bad guys, then we have films like balto and alpha. You can have both and audiences can grow an appreciate an animal while still enjoying films where they are in an antagonistic role. Even without films, people are still going to fear and want to stay away from certain animals based on their looks, such as rats, roaches, bats, snakes, spiders and considering corvids are known to hold grudges and attack those who wronged them, they can be a good contender. People just have bad experiences with certain animals which can lead to a negative outlook. The only problem I have with some of these films where dinosaurs are these bloodthirsty monsters is if their eating or killing for the sake of it. Like the Baryonx and Carnotaurus in fallen kingdom, in the situations they were in, attacking the characters where pretty stupid and unneeded tension. I-Rex and Indoraptor I give a pass because they were a lot more hybrid, have a higher IQ and probably had a grudge with humans. If dinosaurs are going to be portrayed as monsters I feel as though there should be a proper and explained reason. Maybe they are hyper territorial, maybe they are intelligent have a grudge against humans, they are like the skull crawlers or hypos from the isle and have a hyper metabolism, maybe there is a chemical imbalance going on with them from a questionable food source or exposure to radiation. Maybe the dinosaurs have a disease or haven't eaten in days. I just feel like if we get rid of this trope for the idea of better informing the public, we're just going to be walking on eggshells when it comes to entertainment and it might not pay off and we are just getting rid of a niche that many still enjoy and want to see more off in films, games and stories. I feel as though never putting them or any animals in a antagonistic role isn't the way to go. There just needs to be a better balance between the two,

I much prefer portraying dinosaurs as animals. It’s something that I will give praise to Jurassic world for doing. There was more use of animals behaviors such as intimidation, fights only lasting until one animal backs down, & curiosity. And in a horror setting they are far more terrifying, especially since we know dinosaurs could not make the sounds they do in pop culture.

Watching this video and being reminded of The Valley of Gwangi makes me think of a strange idea. What if there’s a remake of this film, with scientifically accurate creatures, and with Gwangi being portrayed as more of a scared and confused animal. It would give some form of competition against films like the Jurassic Park/World franchise. But that’s maybe just me, I’m glad many others want more animal like depictions of dinosaurs in media instead of being bloodthirsty monsters that shouldn’t even exist. The same has happened to sharks, however due to some research given through the internet and films like Blackfish, dolphins are more shown of their horrible behavior and paint a good picture for sharks. Still kinda sad that people hate big carnivores all because of the fact they need to eat.

The Jurassic Movies also showed that even though some dinosaurs are super dangerous and will try to eat you because they see you as prey they still should be protected and preserved. Like when they helped the T-Rex baby in The Lost World even though the parents attacked them, or when they tried to save the dinosaurs from the island in Fallen Kingdom. Especially in Camp Cretaceous this was encouraged as they got attacked by dinosaurs a lot of times but still did everything to protect them. And usually the dinosaurs in the Jurassic movies have a reason why they attack: Because they see humans either as prey, as a threat, or they want to defend their prey or their young against them. These are reasons why animals from our time can attack humans as well. An exception are of course the hybrids, which have been bred to be unnaturally aggressive and attack everything. But the "regular" dinosaurs usually have a reason why they attack. And Dr. Wu's quote "To a canary a cat is a monster. We are just used to being the cat." really sums it up. A hunting animal looks like a monster to its prey, but it is still an animal. "Animal" and "Monster" don't necessarily contradict each other.

Honestly the JP dinos shouldn't be protected by the characters. They're artificial creatures that have no place in the modern world, and imbalance ecosystems with their presence, on top of the obvious human risk they present. They should be put down or let to die out, since their time is long past.

It's a possibility that the poor reception of 65 and the success of Prehistoric Planet will urge studios to try something different when it comes to prehistoric animal portrayals. Obviously, Universal will continue to milk the Jurassic franchise without really caring for their quality. The JW trilogy is worth billions by name alone no matter how poor reviews are. 65 can be seen as evidence that a below average film with dinosaurs and popular actors isn't enough to bring people to the theater if it isn't part of the Jurassic franchise. In my opinion, I think it is possible for accurate dinosaur portrayals in mainstream films to be successful. The films themselves just need to be good. Good storytelling, believable & compelling creatures, and memorable characters are what made Jurassic Park so beloved. I think it can be done. There just need to be people who actually care about the material behind the scenes to do so.

As a avid dinosaur/paleontology nerd, I can agree with you that it’s better in many ways to see dinosaurs as animals rather than as monsters, since they were once living, breathing creatures that were struggling every day to find food, fend off predators, and look for mates to start the next generation. And it’s nearly sad to say that over the decades, even to this day, many movies, TV shows, video games and even highly-sensational videos here on KZfaq have almost always exaggeratedly portrayed dinosaurs as savage beasts that are always out there to devour people or kill each other, or get important or subtle aspects of paleontology completely wrong. Rather than getting stuck on constantly doing critical assessments of such old dinosaur/paleontology media or simply debunking old paleontology myths, we should focus on producing new documentary media, films or videos that use CGI or any other form of animation to reflect our current scientific understanding of these fascinating prehistoric animals.

The word 'animal' may have some negative connotations for some people. Like for example, when some people get to be called 'an animal', it may mean they are behaving in an aggressive or violent way. Which in my opinion, isn't the right way to use the word animal. No animal has to be aggressive, no animal has to be violent, in fact most animals on earth pose little harm to humans (except mosquitoes they are quite deadly). We also use the word 'animal' wrong. In casual, everyday speech, we use the word animal to mean 'opposite of a human', but in reality... we are also animals, because we fit the scientific definition of an animal, and must also be animals (despite most people thinking that you are silly).

Before you start read: I am not trying to be offensive but I am telling you a story A few days ago I found a video that says “what does the bible say about dinosaurs” and in the video the pastor says “even though the bible doesn’t explicitly say dinosaurs it uses worlds like ‘leviathan’ or ‘behemoth’ or ‘dragons’ and the details sounds a lot like dinosaurs.” I got angry, not that he said things like ‘Noah’s flood killed the dinosaurs’ but because both him and his audience agreed that dinosaurs were all blood thirsty killers and then were punished for their sins. It makes me angry how people see these creatures as bloodthirsty just because they are different, I mean, elephants are big and different but people don’t call then monsters.

Honestly - the next best thing for the Jurassic franchise to do to capture the wonder of people again, would be to reboot it. But this time - with all the realistic depictions of the animals., instead of the tired depictions from the novel or existing movies. With all the unearthly sounds they might have made instead of the typical big cat roar of the trex in JP. And their possibly bizzare appearance Make the large herbivores such as the sauropods dangerous like the elephant seal like Dreadnoughtus shown in Prehistoric world. Something that completely beats audience expectations.

I understand where you're coming from. Depicting dinosaurs as modifiable monsters would definitely be preferable in terms of capitalism and general profit, but this method is becoming monotonous and will most likely become a disadvantage for films (an analogue of this would be 'Superhero Fatigue'). It will take creativity to show dinosaurs as animals along with a captivating story. This challenges filmmakers to be creative with their dinosaur films instead of using dinosaurs as merely obstacles for the main character. Many novels featuring dinosaurs in a more animal-like way would be great to see on the big screen, such as Primitive War by Ethan Pettus and Rift by Thomas Asher.

@@PaleoEntertainment 1-if that's the case... i've yet to see general audiences be like that. 2-but isn't primitive war still kinda "monster" ish? i'm not understanding what's different there. 3- well i guess two ideas that could kinda work would be: A: adapting stories written by actual scientists like Raptor Red B adapting stories with a more unique concept like scott ciencin's DINOVERSE. where the human characters actually TURN INTO DINOSAURS! or even the quintaglio trilogy where on a distant plant, the story focuses around sapient dinosaurs

I grew up with dino docs first before seeing jurassic park and other medias like this wich is maybe why i see them as animals , sure i do like the movie jp dinos being so sharp and mean like for the sake of the movie and plot it makes sense after all its a science-fiction movie so its NOT reality ! This is true and kinda sad that most people know not much from dinos beesides what they see in movies and this lack of knowledge even applies to games , now i dont mean ark survival evolved directly since this game is about surviving as a human with dinos and other creatures in a strange world no... i mean games who are more focused on the fact of being an actual dino so the isle , beast of bermuda or the one i play the most path of titans , the amount of people i see being big bloody thirsty toxic players rather they are beeing carnivores or not , herbivores playeers tend to be super aggro sometimes just because 'hippos are dangerous irl' and other excuses like that... now i know like most people dont know much about dinos well people who play these games are some of those person too i believe but still :/

To be fair, I don't think you can ENTIRELY blame the poor reaction of audiences to carnivorous animals on the films themselves. At the end of the day, audiences are responsible for how they react to a film, as well as distinguishing between fiction and reality. However, I do agree that films that show dangerous predators CAN show more nuance by displaying their behaviors outside of predation, such as parental care. For example, a predator can be shown killing humans, but doing so to feed its young, or going after humans, because they killed its young.

I do like dinosaurs from the movies acting like scary monsters, even though I prefer the animal side of dinosaurs for my young self I always thought dinosaurs were just these bloodthirsty killing machines always battling each other, while the herbivores were just cowards but now I learned that these animals are actually strong dangerous, but seem to not always be like you know, all out attack a pack of velociraptors we just simply give up if you show that you’re going to be a problem like throwing them around like ragdoll‘s and the gentle, herbivore thing that’s absolutely bullshit. Herbivores were very dangerous creatures hell I even agree with triceratops being partially carnivorous with triceratops, eating some dead animals for vitamins, and some other things for its bodies needs.

It's true most people believe predators are the most dangerous animals in the wildlife. But it actually makes more sense for herbivores to be even more aggressive. After all, they are prey animals. A food source for others. They need to be dangerous to survive. Look at the cape buffalo. If they spot a predator, they will not just chase it of. They will actively hunt it down until they catch it and kill it. Painfully so. A wild boar, when agitated, will mercilessly maul whatever got to close to their young. And then there's the moose. Even a grizzly bear will think twice before taking one of these guys as prey. And let's not forget hippos. Those maniacs will murk their young. What makes you think they will go easy on you?
