This music that was enjoyed by many, there is no need for put downs, who came first or who did it better. We know that the music is the the combination of west Africa, jazz, and Spaniard. I hate people who try to say we are better than them, or we had the better beat or dance, its what music makes you feel to do. There's no put down, here. People just love to try and separate.

Puerto Ricans and other non-Cubans have contributed to Afro Cuban music since day one. The recordings, going back to the 1920s, demonstrate this. Bomba AND Plena HAVE evolved musically throughout the 20th century. You can't talk about this music if you're ignorant. You don't deliver babies do you?

This music was not only played in Cuba it was invented in Cuba. Machito, TP & TRod were playing Afro Cuban music ...in New York. It's the same music. It has its local characteristic that distinguishes it from the way the music is played in Cuba. Just as Colombian Salsa sounds different from the Salsa from Puerto Rico. But they're all playing the same music. They're all laying down the same rhythms. It's all Afro-Cuban music.

There is very little of Cuban Pete's overly theatrical style in the way people danced Mambo during that era. The dance motion is essentially from Afro-Cuban dance styles ie "Guaracha" & "Son Montuno. If you go back far enough (1920s) Swing dancing goes back to Harlem. Itself impacted by the Cuban Son dancing of the era. Despite the notion that it is "Nuyorican" the fact is that "Nuyorican" flavor is dipped in an Afro Cuban model.
