I’m from Palo Alto and this movie was so real ! A lot of the kids here are either too busy in school to attend Stanford, drug addicts or just depressed . A lot of the parents here are tech bros + business men and this is where stay at home wives go to die . A log them are either addicted to wine or Xanax . These stories are very real .

Loved this movie so much as a teen I read the book too I still listen to the soundtrack every now and then

This is such a great deconstruction, makes me happy to see this movie done justice in a video essay, I really loved this film as a teenager and re visited it recently. I was suprised at how well it held up, it took me back to that same feeling of listlessness and uncertainty that came w being 16

james has it wrong, his character obviously would know he was doing the wrong thing. a bit odd that he nearly tried to justify the actions of his character.. makes sense that he would tho lol

i cheered when u got to freds section, i was a bit worried u almost overlooked his character but i whole heartedly agree on that entire section of ur video.

I’m not sure Fred is gay. I dont think that really makes sense. I think the idea of him being sexually abused makes a little more sense. A lot of times in movies trauma is just so unresolved that the characters act a certain way ( a little crazy lol). He could be shameful and unwilling to accept what has happened in his past which in return makes him act that way. Even if not sexually abused, his wanting and yearn to be loved is coming from somewhere in his past. He even says tell me you love me to Emily as she is about to blow him. He hugs himself while crying with the knife in his hand.
